But they USED to be supported by QuickDraw. I used to be able to place a WMF in PPT and "Ungroup" to an editable PPT graphic. That function was lost when Apple discontinued support for QuckDraw. Oh for the good-ol days. I DO find it very easy though, to copy-n-paste AI images to and from PPT now. Round-tripping an AI file even retains Symbols and Live Paint objects. I'm sure there are features that may be lost, but I try to keep it simple. This gives me the best of both worlds: simple, animated presentations and accurate, vector graphics. I'm saying all this based on my experience using AI CS5 and Mac PPT 2011 on Mac OS X 10.8.5. I'll see if it still works in 10.11.5 and CC 2015. Report: With one preference adjustment the method still works. Here are the Clipboard options. I had to turn OFF "Include SVG Code".

Sounds like they want an editable vector file in PPT originating from AI. Mac PPT used to convert an WMF to editable vectors until support for Quickdraw was eliminated. Now it's a pain. What I recently learned though, is that I can copy and paste most vector AI elements to and from PPT. That means I can edit a placed PDF in AI even if I don't have the original AI document. This works on Mac OS X 10.8.5/AI CS5/PPT 2011.

Try not to inadvertently click the Perspective Drawing tool. If you can't help yourself, turn off the grid with View > Perspective Grid > Hide Grid. Barb's suggestions are good. I do find myself accidentally turning on the Perspective Grid too often and don't understand why the shortcut is NOT a toggle (I can never remember the "hide" shortcut). Better yet, I'd like to disable the Persp Grid COMPLETELY because I find it useless in my work. I agree there is MUCH room for ergonomic improvements in AI. I don't think so. I agree, it's a no-brainer, but AI does not offer that feature. You might want to read some workarounds here: How can I easily move multiple artboards in Illustrator? - Graphic Design Stack Exchange In essence, creating rectangles then "converting" them to artboards in "Artboard" mode may be the best option. You can then simply delete your original artboard(s).

As Kris says, don't use the eraser tool. If you don't know what selection tool to use you need to start by learning the basics of AI. Learn the difference between "Direct Selection Tool" and "Normal Selection tool". Then learn how to use shortcut keys to access "Group Selection tool". These are fundamental skills for working with AI. Your file appears to be imported from CAD. It may be organized by layers. If not, it needs to be. Check the Layers Panel, where you can lock or hide certain layers to simplify selection/editing.

It is erasing the white fill of the object below. If nothing is selected the eraser tool affects anything below it. To erase from only specific elements first select them.

Live Paint Group "Close Gaps" only refers to how AI handles "Fillable" areas of a Live Paint group. It does not actually alter the paths. Like Monika said, using the blob is probably the most direct route. If you are using a pressure sensitive input device it will closely mimic the pencil quality. It will also automatically merge with the existing strokes.

Ha! Probably not. That's where I'd use a symbol and work right side up, then rotate the symbol. I don't care if this feature is introduced, I just feel there are more important tools that need to be fixed or improved.

My art professor taught me to paint and draw with the stationary artboard. That has translated well to the computer and I've never used the "rotate canvas" feature in PS. Probably never will.

Test Screen, I can identify with your statement but I don't think I'm the only one who finds many of the tools and features simply WORK BETTER and FASTER in older versions. I can give you a list of reasons I still need CS5 even though I have CC 2014. That's why I continue to use an older system that will run both. I do NOT look forward to being forced to "upgrade" and lose CS5.

Is 10.6 recommended for CS4? CS5 works fine on 10.8.5. I'm guessing CS4 would too. As for taking back the new iMac, I don't think that would be out of the question. Was your old one working fine? New is not necessarily better.

I have not read every post in this thread. I routinely fit the artboard to the artwork by choosing "Edit Artboard" (Shift+O) and double-clicking the group or object I want to size the current artboard to. Works great (CS5). I'm sure this has already been discussed, just to lazy to read all the posts.

laburke, Good thoughts and I share them completely. I have put off buying a new computer because I don't have the money and I really like CS5. In a way Adobe is alienating their customers because their old software is so good there is little reason to upgrade. I think that is clearly one of the driving factors pushing Adobe's decision to "rent" software. I noticed CS5 was introduced in 2005. Ten years is a long time in computer terms, but the upgrade cost/benefit curve has steadily leveled off since Illustrator 1.0 was introduced in 1987. I hope you get CS5 working. And I hope my computer keeps working a few more months/years so I can keep enjoying the old, tried and true, PAID FOR, software.

Even if you delete the shortcut, I'd recommend working on a "synced" folder such as Dropbox or GoogleDrive. Then you can always retrieve an earlier version of the file.
