Hi @Lambo8033:   There are two parts to your question: 1.) What the heck happened with Spell Check? and 2) Where is my content!   Like the others, I'd say 2 is the priority and it sounds like your content is still there, just dramatically spaced out with multiple returns. I wondering if perhaps you were using multiple returns ¶s to add vertical space instead of relying on the more reliable method of using InDesign's spacing controls? We don't know your level of InDesign knowledge but that is a common mistake for newer users. And if your dropcap paragraph style has Keep Options on it and it was mistakenly added to a long list of returns, this exact scenario could unfold.   You might enable Type > Show Hidden Characters so that you can see all of the ¶ ¶ ¶ in the layout view or the story editor view and then assign a neutral style (perhaps [Basic Paragraph] or Body—we don't know which without seeing your file) to all of them. Does the file look more normal in layout view?    If it were me, I'd just use Find/Change > Query > Multiple Returns to Single Return to remove them all, but there is a possibility you put them in on purpose and I don't want to mess you up while trying to help.   ~Barb   ... Hi @M.E.310814321c2q:   I'm confused by your workflow description. A book file (.indb file) is just a list of InDesign files (.indd files). The book file below (Book 1.indd) has four InDesign document files listed.      When I think about editing the book file, I'm thinking about adding files, removing files, rearranging the order and updating the various numbering systems and x-refs or syncing formatting across the other files.. I save the book updates using the book panel menu > Save Book as shown, above.   When I think about editing an InDesign file, then I'm opening up one of those files in the list to edit the content (including pasting in new content or pasting over existing content), changing the formatting, etc. Then I save the updated InDesign file with File > Save when the document is active.   I copy text from the "edits" and paste into the final version book INDB. We don't actually paste directly into a book file—we open a file within that book and paste into the file.  So with that in mind, can you clarify your workflow? Screen shots are also super helpful.    ~Barb     ... Hi @Thomas_Calvin:   I'm not 100% sure I'm following. Numbers can start over per story or continue across stories or even books – it depends on how you set up the named list. You will see this dialog box as you created a named list, and can access it later in Type > Bulleted and Numbered Lists > Define List > Edit.     But, I think you're saying that it's working now? Hi @ricks35183463:   What you didn't share is how the content looks on the body page so I made a guess and set up the title as a single paragraph, styled with the paragraph style called Title. I then assigned three individual characters styles. (Yours may be simpler.)   I used three character styles: Lesson No (no formatting), Title (removes bold) and Number (removes bold and assigns italics).       On the parent page I set up three consecutive, individual variables: I called them Lesson No, Title and Number. All three are using the Type: Running Header (Character style) which allows me to call in (and format individually) content assigned the character styles Lesson No, Title and Number on the Body pages.   I then used a character style to assign bold to the first variable, ignored the middle one and made the last variable italic.     The result on the body pages:     ~Barb   ... Hi Rick:   There are two ways to get InDesign to collect content from the page for the running heads: either by referencing a paragraph style or a character style (or styles) in running head variables.  Like Willi suggested, the only way I have figured out how to get regular and italics into the running head automatically is to use two character styles on the title: one for the regular text and one for the italics. I set up both variables on the parent page side-by-side and then call in the text assigned the character styles. This works if there is position consistency (the italics is always at the beginning of the title or always at the end) but falls apart if the italics is in the middle of the title. That's correct, Rick, we still can't do it natively in InDesign like we can in Fm. Grouping is the workaround, but it's fussy. To add call-outs to existing groups—or add another image—you'd need either mess with layers or cut the group from the frame, paste it on the page/pasteboard, add the new content, select, group, cut and paste into again. When you multiply those extra steps by the sheer volume of images so many of us—and our clients—work with, it's still a limitation.   ~Barb ... View more

Hi @btap:   We nudge objects using the arrow keys on the keyboard (add Shift+arrow to increase the distance), yes, the distance is controlled with the Cursor Key value in Units & Increments.   What exactly did the shortcut you are remembering do for you? Hi Kelly:   I've see something similar when I've tried to reuse an .indb file (with different files). InDesign hangs on to the old info even though the old files are no longer in the book.   You might try:  Creating a new book file and then add the .indd files back in, and then Delete the frames associated with the original generated TOC from the TOC .indd file and regenerate it into a new frame (or frames).   ~Barb ... Hey Thomas;   I'm a career InDesign and FrameMaker instructor (and Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat). FrameMaker doesn't have the ability to change a variable definition based on a section change either—sections are unique to InDesign—but it does pick up content from the page for the running heads, just like InDesign does. Hi Thomas:   No. As I said on your other thread earlier today, variabled are defined document-wide and we can't tie a variable to a section but, now that we can see your image, there is a way to automate this.   And to adrdess a recent question, the term running head refers to the repeating content in both the top margin (aka header) and in bottom margin (aka footer).    Assuming you want the word General in the running head under Section 1, add it to the body page, create a paragraph style for it and then add a Running Head (Paragraph style) variable to your parent page to pull in the content, based on the assigned paragraph style. InDesign will pull the content from the page (in this case, General) and will repeat the content in the header until it changes at the beginning of the next section.  Automatically. This feature is used to pull chapter names, chapter numbers and subheads into the running heads, which is exactly what you are looking for.    ~Barb ... View more
