I agree with @rob day.   Here's a quick demo of one way to reapply the A-Parent and remove the override. Be sure to save before you try to fix this, in case it causes other issues. HI @stekker:   It's evening in the UK, so I don't think we will hear back from @Eugene Tyson until morning, but I think he recommended saving as IDML as a one time thing. If there's corruption in the file like a lingering font reference, it can straighten it out. I first answered early morning in my time zone,  and realize now that Eugene also asked about if the font appeared in Find/Replace font. (Sorry, Eugene!!)   As for your fonts, it looks like you aren't using Adobe's versions of Arno Pro—you likely licensed them elsewhere. Note the difference in the naming conventions and more. (Your screen shot seems to be cropped on the right.)     And if you open Type > Find/Replace Font, is the problematic font as being used still being used somewhere in the file? Hi @victoriawolf:   I don't see that this has been addressed yet: I have installed and reinstalled ID, and that did not help.   Uninstalling InDesign leaves remnants the the program behind. The InDesign cache/preferences files can become corrupt over time and cause unexpected behaviors and these will stick around after a regular uninstall.   When InDesign starts misbehaving, I would either: Rebuild cache/preferences (https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/), or Uninstall using the Adobe CC Cleaner tool (https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html) before reinstalling with the CC desktop app.   ~Barb ... On the bright side, once you know how to do it in one application, you can use that same information in any application. Hi @DavidacrossAmerica: Can you determine from this screenshot what I am doing wrong?   In my video, I selected (highlighted) all of the text prior to Shift-dragging the bottom triangle.   In your video, you only had your cursor clicked in the first paragraph. Hi @stefang14945369:   One more note to add to Eugene's list of suggestions: we have had multiple reports of keyboard shortcuts not working because of interference from other applications—most typically anti-malware or anti-virus apps. Webroot caused such a big issue for folks that they added the steps needed to stop the interference with InDesign's shortcuts on the support page on their website.   Try restarting your computer and only open InDesign. Do the shortcuts work again? If no, disable the start-up applications and restart one more time and try again. Thank you for trusting us with your files, Susan. I'm happy to remove them for your privacy after you are clear on the answer.   So I took a very close look at your files and couldn't find any reason why the content isn't being pulled into the TOC.   I finally created a new file, copied the ch01 text and pasted it in the new file. I didn't change anything other than saving it and adding it to the book and it worked exactly as expected. This points to corruption in the ch01 file (that saving as .idml didn't fix).   My recommendation is that you move the ch01 content to a new file. This would be simplied/streamlined by opening a working chapter like ch02, saving it under a new name and then replacing the ch02 content with the ch01 content. Add it to the book and update. If it pulls in the content then you can stop and review the new ch01 to make sure everything is in place.   ~Barb ... View more

Great screenshots, thank you, @maravac2468 —I see what you are up against, but have never experienced this myself.   I have worked excusively with .docx files for years, so I tend to agree with @Peter Kahrel. Try saving the Word .doc file as .docx (which includes the .doc file inside) to see if that solves it. And you could certainly try placing an .rtf version as suggested as well.   I suspect this is happening on import so one more idea... try breaking the Word file into smaller files. Maybe two or four files where you have one and then place them sequentially, with your cursor at the end of each segment as you place the next one so that you end up with one long file again. Hi @vevegirl13:   Can you share the same screen shot but with the frame selected? (click it with the Selection tool). If you have multiple text frames on the page, choose Edit > Select all with the selection tool, and then share that screenshot instead.   I'm trying to figure out if you have a one-column frame divided into two columns or if you have two threaded frames. You are also using the paragraph split command—and I can't tell exactly where from the current screenshot—but that's the likely culprit splitting Bombay in half and hyphenating it.   ~Barb ... You know what, Ingrid? You would get the same results if you have non-breaking spaces between the page numbers, no character styles assigned and hypenation off.   Look for ^s or ^S after the page numbers and replace with a space.   .   Everything looks normal until you enable Type > Show Hidden Characters and then the ^ appears indicating a non- breaking space. Hi @maravac2468:   I work in very footnote intensive files (150-500 notes per article) and have never seen this.   Can you enable Type > Show Hidden Characters and then share a screenshot of a page where this is happening? Even better, can you click the ¶ button on the main ribbon in the Word document (same as Show Hidden Characters in InDesign) and show us the same page?
