Another test would be to delete the thumbnail preview and recreate it... this seems to have come up a few months ago: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/library-standard-preview-not-updating-for-iphone-15-heic-files/td-p/14222470 Please take a look at the recommendatin from @Jao vdL "Make sure you set the default for development of images to not do HDR. In Classic, this preference is in Preferences->Presets. On the phone version of Lightroom that is in App Settings->Import. "

Phew - I only asked about restarting - factory reset is not easy to do nor should you do that. Please clarify what it is that you are experiencing. It sounds like some images (iPhone) images are behaving differently than sony images. Can you test one HEIC file by converting it to a jpg to see if the problem goes away... that may help to rule out file type and also allow others to test to see if HEICs not showing develop changes in the Library module can be reproduced.

Can you be more specific about what's happened to your folder structure? If you are using a yyyy-mm-dd file system - a TM version of your catalog will show you what you need to recreate.

Sonoma has been the most problematic update for printing workflows that can be reproduced on any mumber of configurations. In this instance if the printer can no longer be found you'll need to add it again via System Settings > Printers and Scanners. If you've done that and it still can't be found you may need to take advantage of your apple support that is available with new purchases. Are you able to see, select and print a test from Preview or other app?

Try using the spotlight to search the system for .lrcat files. The result should return a list of any .lrcat files still on your computer. Select the .lrcat file and look at the 'Last Opened' date. By your estimation based on this date you may be able to find the catalog that reflects what you are expecting to see. When you say you backed up your macbook are you using Time Machine? Are you also creating backups of your Lightroom Classic catalog?

When the number doesn't change you might want to go to lightroom.adobe.com and log in via the browser. Look in the left column near All Photos to see if there are Sync Errors. If yes - delete all sync errors to restart the sync process. If Lightroom encounters a missing image (one example) the process will be interrupted - clearing the errors on both the browser version and the desktop version should restart the sync. If that doesn't work you can rebuild sync data by going into the preferences > sync tab > hold down the Option key and tap on the Rebuild Sync Data button.

When the grey thumbnails appear does the cloud icon show that Lightroom is still syncing or are you seeing that it is fully synced with a green checkmark?

This issues sounds more related to Sonoma than Canon or Lightroom. Rolling back is painful but if printing is your number one priority Sonoma is likely the culprit. In working with clients having new issues with their longstanding print workflow the common denominator is Sonoma.

I've seen this too and when I restart Lightroom Classic the problem goes away. Will look into whether this is a known issue.

If you have backups and there is a backup that reflects the Lightroom Classic catalog before the file structure changed that may be more effiecient. If you are able to take that path - restore that catalog and move forward with the rest of your plan to uninstall and reinstall Lightroom. Take care to see if you can identify what happened so that you won't end up in the same scenario.
