Hi
Is there any way with GREP to search the first and last characters of a line (not paragraph) as it flows in InDesign? Please see example attached.
I'm trying to locate all lines that begin with a hyphen, or terminate with "I" etc so I can reflow them for stylistic purposes, but I'm not sure if GREP can interact with the text flow in this way, and there don't seem to be any hidden characters at automatic line breaks that GREP could locate.
Again this is not about the first character in a paragraph, so '^' isn't any use here I don't think. I'm currently polishing a 400 page book whose author is a bit hyphen/en-dash crazy so having a way to automate this search woud be a lot faster and less error prone.
Is this possible? Many thanks Richard

Hi I've pasted some old Indesign CS3 content into my ID 16.4 document, and I see these unfamiliar hidden characters at the beginning of paragraphs, and they're causing some issues with my usual typesetting processes. They look like uppercase "I" characters, and when I paste them into GREP search, they appear as "~I" If I search for them using GREP, Indesign crashes. Is there a way to remove these? Thanks Richard

Hi I have a book of daily meditations whose dates for each day are in anchored text frames. I need to do a search and replace on these, but Search ignores them. The main copy on each page is in a Primary Text Frame. Even if I un-anchor the frames, Search still completely misses them. I have removed all search parameters and am performing the most basic text search. If anyone has any ideas about what might be happening here I'd be grateful, as I'm at a loss to explain why this most basic function should be behaving in this seemingly broken manner. I've created a blank file with a Primary Text Frame on the Parent Page, and several text frames including a PTF on the page itself, and it is able to search in all text fields without any problems, but as soon as I anchor one of the text frames, Search is not able to search in all the text frames any longer, so either this is a bug or a bizarre design decision! I'm on 16.4 on Windows 10. Many thanks Richard

Hi Thanks for your reply. It happens intermittently, and I've seen it before, but not with all projects. It's clearly a known issue, as far back as ID 15, going by this thread here: https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/39497992-duplicating-pages-moves-content ... the fix suggested of unticking "Adjust Layout" in "Layout | Margins and Columns" does seem to fix the problem, so it seems to be a problem relating to that. When toggling Adjust Layout back on, the problem reappears. Windows 10.0.19045 Indesign 19.1 Thanks Richard

I've noticed this in InDesign 19, but also in 18 too. Sometimes when I duplicate a page, the objects on the duplicated page have been moved and/or resized, simply as a result of duplicating the page. See below - original above, duplicate below. In the duplicate, everything below "Chief" has moved up by different amounts, and the "Recruitment" text frame has shrunk, causing overset text. Original Duplicate Repeating this operation on the original creates the same result. It seems from Adobe Bug reporting that this was happening back in Indesign v15 too!

This is actually normal operation for Windows, and easy to avoid with one basic precaution: The last installed version will always take over the file associations. Knowing that, it's easily avoided. By @D Fosse The last installed version is Ps25.3.1, so this doesn't apply. Ps 24.7 has kept the file associations, and the more recently installed 25.3.1 (later both in time and version number) has not taken them over, so this is not displaying default Windows behaviour as you suggest. I'm well familiar with default Windows behaviour, over decades of experience, and am hardly an "unsuspecting" user, as the tone of your post seems to assume 🙂 This bug has existed in previous versions of Photoshop (and maybe other Adobe apps too) - the latest installation is simply not taking on the default file associations as it should, as the several other posts here seem to attest to, and no amount of manual resetting of associations seems to change it. PS. Forum seems broken - I couldn't Reply to your post by clicking "Reply" under your post as this replies to my Original Post, and not to yours, and there is no way I can find to Quote your post, so had to do it manually.

In the end, the only way I could get default associations workng for PS25 was to uninstall PS24, and then I was able to manually associate the various file extensions with PS25.

Hi I cannot seem to set the default file association for JPG/JPEG to Photoshop 2024. I carry out all the usual steps i.e. right click pn a JPG > Open with > Set as default > Navigate to PS2024 manually as it's not in the list > Select ... nothing happens. Windows 10 does not set up the file association, and JPG is left unassociated. I have set this association up in Bridge, but InDesign seems to want to use the Windows default association for "Edit with". I've also tried the Default Apps thing in Windows, but PS2024 is not listed, and it can only then point to the App Store. Is there a way to get round this and get this set up? I seem to remember having this problem before when I installed a new version of Photoshop with one already installed. All the asspcations remained with the older version and were frustratingly awkward to move across to the new one. Currently on PS 25.3.1, on Win 10. Thanks for your help Richard

Hi I created a document in InDesign 18.4 which uses Gal Gothic Variable font from Adobe Fonts. However when opening the document in InDesign 19, the font is messed up. For easy comparison I created a new document in 18.4 using dummy text, and then opened it again in 19. Results are shown below - first image is Indesign 18.4 (appears correctly) and the second is InDesign 19. This occurred in ID19 and 19.0.1 so it hasn't been addressed. Has anyone else encountered this? UPDATE: Only happens with Gal Gothic Variable font weights from Demi and above, and doesn't occur with other variable fonts such as Acumin. Thanks Richard

Thanks for getting back to me. I've had a look at the preview chapter of your book and it's bang on the money, and definitely on mission, so I'll buy a copy and get stuck in. I don't have any eBook projects at the moment, but one of the publishers I work with keeps asking about it as they are having trouble finding people with the right skills. I've created quite a few print titles for them, so being able to create the eBook versions would be a win-win. I tried one ePub conversion of one of these titles a while back, and made it as far as a serviceable .epub title with main copy, headings and working TOC, but it didn't look consistent across multiple Kindle readers, and I knew I'd need to upskill to understand why and fix the issues. Anyways, thanks again and I look forward to finally getting going with this. Cheers Richard

Hi James Apologies for very delayed reply - I realise I don't have email notifications turned on for the Adobe forum, so I have only seen your post today. I have 10+ years experience with InDesign and maybe 4 with book design, so hoping I can adapt to additional requirements fairly quickly. My potential eBook book projects are mostly fairly text-heavy, with some media content throughout, but would like the skillset to produce more media rich titles and more less text-heavy content too. Thanks for your helpful comments and I will check our your own title. Thanks Richard

Hi folks I'm already fairly adept with using InDesign to create print and digital resources, but a client asked me this week if I could offer eBook versions of some titles. In a previous project I tried exporting from InDesign as an ePub to see how it turned out, and the eBook was a mess, with things all over the place and I realised I would need to learn more about how to prepare and export books with this in mind. I've searched for a course (e.g. on LinkedIn learning) or other resource which sets this out simply and clearly but apart from a chapter in a book on Book Design, I've yet to find anything that gives me the framework of understanding and technique to confidently offer this to clients. I wonder if anyone knows of reliable resource that will help get me up to speed with creating ePubs using InDesign? Many thanks! Richard

Hi folks I have created a path, and placed text on it, but now I can't seem to select the anchor points with the Direct Selection tool to edit the path. I try clicking off the path, and then clicking anchor points, but this doesn't select the anchor point i.e. show bezier handles. I used the same technique to edit a vector shape moments ago, but I can't get it to work with the path with text on. I can edit the path without text on, but as soon as I add text on the path, the path becomes uneditable. Is this a known issue, or am I missing something? I'm on InDesign 17.3 on Win 10 (until I finish this project). Thanks in advance Richard

HI folks Wondering if anyone else has encountered this strange pagination glitch, where text is rendered over footnotes? It's happened to me a few couple of times in a 300 page book I'm working on. Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? I'm currently on InDesign 17.3, and wary of updating until this project is complete. Many thanks Richard

Hi folks A client has passed me a manuscript where all text to be italicised is enclosed in $ signs e.g. $italicise this$. This seems like a perfect job for GREP, but I cannot get it working consistently. Text between $ signs may include any other text i.e. letters, digits, whitespace\newline, punctuation Goal is to find each instance, italicise the text, and remove the $ signs. My current GREP query is shown below (see screenshot for full search), but it misses many instances: Find: (\$)(.+)(\$) Replace: $2 (Change format to “Italic” character style) Any help appreciated! Thanks Richard

Thanks Rob ... I think it's maybe terminology, as this is what was described by Randy above, but described in that case as a single PTF extended across multiple frames rather than separate PTFs, but it's the same thing in the end, described in different ways. And now that my frames are threaded, the PTF icon appears on both frames as indicated, so I'm good to go. Thanks everyone Richard

Hi Rob Thanks for your reply. However I haven't been able to replicate that setup on a two page spread - it seems I can only have one PTF per two page spread. Any attempt I've made to convert a second text frame into a PTF on the 2 page spread reverts the existing PTF to a normal text frame, which was what confused me and prompted the original post. I may be doing something wrong of course ... but I was not able to get InDesign to do anything different from what I've described. Thanks Richard

Hi Randy ... This explains things perfectly, and I've got it working now using your steps. I had read that each Master PAGE can only have one PTF, but hadn't clocked that this also applies to Master SPREADS. Many thanks! Richard

Hi I've run into a strange issue. I created a new Facing Pages document from scratch, as I have many times, with Primary Text Frame (PTF) on both pages. I accidentally deleted one of the PTFs at some point, so I created a new text frame, and tried to set it to be a PTF. However, InDesign won't let me create a PTF on both Recto and Verso pages. If I set the Recto one to be a PTF, the Verso one reverts to a normal text frame and vice versa. If I create a new file, with Facing Pages and PTF ticked, it's fine - both recto and verso text frames are PTFs. What is happening here? Can I repair this broken file, or is it corrupted\bugged, and should I start again? Thanks for your help! Richard

The first one looked interesting - will have a look at the curriculum, but it might be a little basic, as I'm after something more intermediate\advanced. There is also a typesetting one with John McWade which looks like a better fit, and John is an excellent instructor. Thanks again Richard
