Hi folks A client has passed me a manuscript where all text to be italicised is enclosed in $ signs e.g. $italicise this$. This seems like a perfect job for GREP, but I cannot get it working consistently. Text between $ signs may include any other text i.e. letters, digits, whitespace\newline, punctuation Goal is to find each instance, italicise the text, and remove the $ signs. My current GREP query is shown below (see screenshot for full search), but it misses many instances: Find: (\$)(.+)(\$) Replace: $2 (Change format to “Italic” character style) Any help appreciated! Thanks Rob ... I think it's maybe terminology, as this is what was described by Randy above, but described in that case as a single PTF extended across multiple frames rather than separate PTFs, but it's the same thing in the end, described in different ways. And now that my frames are threaded, the PTF icon appears on both frames as indicated, so I'm good to go. Thanks everyone Richard

Hi Rob Thanks for your reply. However I haven't been able to replicate that setup on a two page spread - it seems I can only have one PTF per two page spread. Any attempt I've made to convert a second text frame into a PTF on the 2 page spread reverts the existing PTF to a normal text frame, which was what confused me and prompted the original post. I may be doing something wrong of course ... but I was not able to get InDesign to do anything different from what I've described. Thanks Richard

Hi I've run into a strange issue. I created a new Facing Pages document from scratch, as I have many times, with Primary Text Frame (PTF) on both pages. I accidentally deleted one of the PTFs at some point, so I created a new text frame, and tried to set it to be a PTF. However, InDesign won't let me create a PTF on both Recto and Verso pages. If I set the Recto one to be a PTF, the Verso one reverts to a normal text frame and vice versa. If I create a new file, with Facing Pages and PTF ticked, it's fine - both recto and verso text frames are PTFs. What is happening here? Can I repair this broken file, or is it corrupted\bugged, and should I start again? Thanks for your help! Richard

Hi Folks
Wondering if anyone can recommend intermediate\advanced online courses in Typesetting\Book Design, preferably using InDesign, but not necessarily (e.g. if it covers more traditional techniques, to increase awareness of the topic).
I've already designed\typeset several commercial titles, but am aware that I'm self-taught, and every so often I find a hole in my knowledge, so am looking to build a more solid base for moving forwards in typesetting and book design more generally.
Preferably I'm looking for courses that you would personally recommend, as I've already found some from Google searching, but hard to tell how good they are.
Any recommendations appreciated!

Hi After everything working fine yesterday, I opened Illustrator CC 2020 this mornign to discover I had no toolbars. All my Workspaces are still listed in the Workspaces dropdown menu, but I can't recall them, or create new ones, or reset the selected one. I need to fix this urgently as I have client work waiting. If anyone can help, I'd be grateful! Thanks in advance Richard

Thanks ... It's a merged layer consisting of an extruded text object and a plane. I had made a few tweaks to the 3D text object following a Youtube tutorial. I tried it again with just an extruded text object and it rendered OK that time. I'm not able to share the file unfortuantely at the moment as I don't have client permission to do so, but will see if I can reproduce the crash with some other content.

Still broken in Photoshop CC 2020 (v21.2.0). Transform Again (Ctrl+Shift+T) and Transform Again with Duplicate (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T) usually unavailable for Smart Objects. I have to create the desired transformation on a non Smart layer, then switch back to the Smart Object to apply Transform Again\with duplicate.

Whenever I Render a 3D layer, Photoshop crashes (after about 10 seconds of "thinking").

In the meantime I discovered the method you outline, of removing the PTF on those pages and using the TOC created frames instead, so somehow I managed to stumble across the solution. Thanks! Richard

Hi Firstly, when I create a TOC, I cannot insert it into my Primary Text Frame (PTF), as ID always places it in a new frame. When I copy and paste the TOC from this new frame into my PTF, I can no longer update it, which is useless as the page numbers are now incorrect. So ... 1. Can I force Indesign to paste the TOC at the insertion point in my PTF, rather than place it in a new text frame? 2. If not, and I have to copy and paste it into the PTF, how can I update it afterwards? Thanks for your help! Richarc

Hi All I've tried to reproduce the photo painting steps on the following page, but without success: https://blogs.adobe.com/creative/better-together-photoshop-on-the-ipad-and-adobe-fresco-premium/?red=a I'm on the latest Fresco on iPad but it is not behaving the same way as outlined in the tutorial. Steps I have carried out: 1. Load a photo into a Fresco pixel layer 2. Select a Live Oil Brush 3. In Colour tool, set Opacity to 0 At this point, the article claims that the brush will now paint on the photo.However, all that happens for me is that as soon as I tap the Apple Pencil onto the pixel layer, it creates a new live layer above it. However the screenshot in the article does not show a new live layer being created above the photo layer, but it shows the oil paint effect appearing on the photo while the photo layer is still active. Has anyone managed to get this working? If anyone can please explain the exact steps required to reproduce this effect I would be very grateful. Im on an iPad Pro 2017, iOS 13.4.1 and Apple Pencil 1, with Fresco 1.6.0 Thanks Richard

Why is this feature still saving application wide settings for the Asset Export panel in CC20. The current implementation is next to useless as it requires export settings to be re-entered for every project, which is a major waste of time when working on multiple projects simultaenously that require this feature. Adobe - have you not talked to any real world designers and found out how we actually work? Asset Export is project specific. These settings should either be saved with the AI file or we should be able to save Asset Export presets which can be recalled easily. Please prove us wrong!

Hi I am creating an InDesign document which uses an RGB palette created with Adobe Color and imported into the current document via my Library. All colours display correctly on screen until: - I overlay a coloured shape (using an RGB swatch) using Multiply blend mode - Place a transparent PNG (but NOT an opaque PNG) The behaviour does not happen if I - Place an opaque PNG or a JPG, or PSD When I do either of these, the screen view switches to CMYK proof colours (much duller), even though View | Overprint Preview and View | Proof Colours are OFF. Once the colours have been dulled in this way, and I export to interactive PDF, the colours show up correctly in the PDF, so this is just a display issue in Indesign. if I delete the placed transparent PNG or switch the coloured shape's Blend Mode back to "Normal", the problem disappears and colours are displayed correctly, as RGB. The project deliverable is a digital only PDF so I am working entirely in RGB, and have no need or desire for print proofing, so this behaviour is obstructing my workflow, as I don't want to have to guess what the output will be. I need the screen colours to match the interactive PDF output. If anyone would please suggest what is happening here and how can I fix this buggy\weird behaviour. It might be my lack of knowledge, and if so, I hope to learn what is happening, but I've worked on similar projects in the past with similar InDesign features used and have never seen this before. I should have mentioned that it only happens for hyperlinks, not cross references to the same anchors. And the Links panel does jump to the correct page when testing the Hyperlink destination, so it's just the PDF export which is broken, rather than all use cases, so it's clearly a bug. So it turns out there is currently no reliable way to hyperlink to a fixed piece of flowable content in InDesign ...

Just to say I've realised that this happens when new pages have been inserted and removed again as part of Smart Reflow, causing the text anchor to end up on a different page to the one it was created on.

Hi I have a Contents page with 10 hyperlinks. I created Text Anchor Hyperlink destinations on all 10 target pages, and then created Hyperlinks to them from the Contents page. In 9 of these cases, clicking the hyperlinks in the exported PDF jumps to the correct page, but in one of them, clicking jumps to the NEXT page following the text anchor. If i jump to the destination by clicking the anchor in the Hyperlinks panel, this problematic link does jump to the correct page, but something is breaking in the export process which is causing it to jump to the wrong page when clicked in the PDF Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it or troubleshoot it? Working in Indesign 14.0.1 on Windows 7 and viewing the PDF in Acrobat DC. Thanks for your help! Richard

I cannot understand why these settings cannot be saved, or at least saved for each AI file. It is complete nonsense to have this as an application wide setting. Someone has not thought this through properly in terms of real world workflow. I was recently working on icon sets for two separate clients, and often moved from one project to the other as feedback came in. I had reset the Export Asset savings each time, having had to make a separate note of what each project required. This is very inefficient, time consuming and error-prone, and it could so easily be fixed with the simple change of file-specific export settings.
