Using the Community

Forum users should not be allowed to participate under more than one user ID. This would help prevent forum abuse for the purpose of personal amusement and raise the substantive quality of input for everyone. Roddy

Adobe, there are several GREAT forum packages out there that are well-established, well-supported, highly-configurable and well-liked by the community. Why re-invent the wheel creating new forum software? Use your resources to customize an existing package and moderate the forums. Take all the money you'll save and add headcount to the Lightroom team! (OK, I'm biased...)

Found an oddity with using two computers... home and work Logged in last night at home... software welcomes me BOTH at the very top left, just my name, AND just below the white letters on a black rectangle... with my avatar and name Came to the forum this morning at work... said "Welcome John T Smith" at the very top left My avatar and name did NOT show below the black rectangle, and I was not able to post a message I went to the login page... and now I show in both places and may post I will bet I won't be fully logged in when I get home There seems to be a process in the login/cookie that only allows ONE active login

This is my view on what the new forums should provide. This is what I'll personally be measuring the new forums against when we have a fully testable beta version. ================================================================= 1 - The new forums should encourage the participation of new members, both to feel encouraged to seek help in the first place, but also to stay and become long-term contributing members of the online community here. 2 - The new forums should alienate the existing users as little as possible, as there's no point in having questions with no answers - though equally there's no point in having answers with no questions. A tricky balance to strike. 3 - Response of the forums should be no worse, and hopefully better, than typical performance here in recent months. I just logged in to the Lightroom Forum (again!) and was given the opportunity to also entry my Adobe ID. So, I did that. After about 5 to 10 seconds of watching the url change and change and change I got an error message saying that theurl was now back to the original page! In other words, the system was looping. Does this junk ever get tested? Bob Peters

A great help would be the options to view new posts only, with viewing options that include Today's posts; Posts since last logon; Posts within last 24 hours; Posts within last 2 days; etc.

Quite a few times it has been claimed in these threads that the posters are few, do not represent the average, and so on. Seemingly this leads the claimers to the conclusion that the strong support of the present forum appearance and the consequent strong objections to the complete change anticipated, and at least partially confirmed, does not represent a general opinion among forum members. However, I am convinced that the objections to the anticipated change are widespread among the product forum members, especially among frequent posters, and especially among those contributing answers. As far as I can see in the product forums that I contribue to or follow, at least 3/4 of the questions are answered by forum regulars such as myself that never, or very rarely, ask questions themselves. It's been a recent PITA that I've had to log in every time I visit the forum, whereas before I could load the forum from my bookmark and I would already be logged in. Is this one of the new forum "improvements?"

I think what is not being understood by some participants in these discussion is the scale of change which will follow the transition to the new forums. Have a look at http://www.jivesoftware.com/products/clearspace-community and you'll see that the purpose of the Clearspace Community software goes way beyond the objectives that might be deduced of the current forums and their underlying software. My personal take on things is that Adobe have decided that the whole style of the user interactions and community here is no longer appropriate to their corporate needs. There was a time when provision of a support forum was not seen as much related to the main thrust of company objectives, but those days have gone. Online communities are now one of the chief means of interaction between a corporation and its customers - and it's a two way channel. Interaction between those customers is also facilitated by within the online community but that's not necessarily deemed to be the key objective

I use several fora, but these days I'm mostly in the Lightroom forum. I've been saving the URL when signed on so that by clicking on favorites I automatically end up in the forum already signed on. I got prompted a few days ago to associate my Adobe userid with my forum id. Since doing that I always end up in guest mode and have to sign on every time. I tried resaving the URL (once signed on), but that doesn't seem to work either. I log into the forum daily from the same computer and it's irritating to have to continually supply my id when it was not previously required. Is this the way it is? Can be be fixed? Or, am I doing something wrong? Thanks very much, Selby

I want to edit them so that that don't expire when you close your browser. I had done it before, but something about the new cookies seem to prevent it. I'll keep on working at it. When and if I get it figured out, I'll post the directions in a reply to this thread. Read the spam thread for awhile and you will see that moderation works well in these webx forums You will also see messages concerning the LACK of moderation over in the cfusion side of things Will the new forum software/structure allow for "this" moderation to continue, or will it fall away to "that" style of non-moderation?

During the last fiasco, the French and Spanish ex-Adobe forums simply vanished, only to reappear after things were restored to their previous state. If anyone trusts my memory, I would say that the ex-MM forums remained untouched in that period. Is anyone visiting these forums in a position to say if there is any intention of keeping all/some/none of the international forums? I am aware that there would be technichal problems such as combining both sets of forums for each language, but they should be no more difficult to solve than in the "normal" forums. I also know that the number of participants in the Spain (Adobe) forum is small, but the forum is a great service for all of those who don't know any English. I imagine the situation is very similar at least for the France (Adobe) forum. It would be a pity to loose them. Finally, if they are going to be kept, this would be a good time to translate properly all of their fixed text.

I'm going to start this over. After the forum transition, for the most part, there will be little change in the people that spend time in any area of the forums. People that have been asking and answering questions will be the same people that have always been there, including hosts. A group of people that have been actively working in the MM side forums, and who will continue working in those same areas after the change, have been invited here a bit earlier because, for the first time, they will have the same hosting rights in their areas that hosts on this side have always had... and we wanted to give them an opportunity to learn how to do the housekeeping that they haven't been able to do over there before. In addition, we will all soon have an opportunity to start learning the new software, and we (including everyone that helps with the preview of it that John has discussed) will be able to help others find their way about once it goes public. Back in the good-old days, just a few weeks ago.... I didn't have to log in every time I visited the forum. And, it would keep track of the posts I've viewed so I didn't have to cruise past the "old" ones to get to the "new" ones. That has changed - for the worse. I don't believe I changed anything on my end, except linking my adobe id's as per the suggestion/requirement. Could this be changed back to the good-old way?

Will the free flow of unified threads be retained, with successive posts filling the entire width, and with simple forum lists of threads, or: A) Are we going to be put in boxes with forum member information to the left and possibly buttons to the left/right/bottom, so the flow is broken up and takes up far more space? B) Will the threads be branched, so everything may become fragmented, and so subjects deserving their own threads will be buried deep? C) Will the forum lists of threads be furnished with dividing lines and possibly arranged by subject rather than latest posts? I believe those are the most fundamental question about the new forum; most other issues can be solved within the right frame, if needed. Have a look at Jivesoftware's own Clearspace (that's the name of the proposed new forum software here) support forum. Hi, I'm looking for any really good reliable books about FrameMaker for beginners. I found "Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book" on amazon but the reviews for it were pretty bad. Does anyone know if there is a FrameMaker book out there that would be suitable for beginners - my version of FrameMaker is 7.2. Thanks in advance for any tips. Sinead.
