Video Hardware

Looking to get a new drive setup for a new build and wondering about some things.Was going to do two 1tb SSDs in Raid with the media files, and a 1Tb Nvme drive with the cache and proj files with the OS on another SSD. Would the Raid setup really be much faster than 1 good SSD? Is the location of where I wanted to put things going to the right spots or should they be reversed?Any tips or better suggestions appreciated.

I'm about to build a new PC and wanted some input from the community about SSD allocation that will optimize editing workflow on CC apps. my motherboard will only have 1 slot for an M.2 drive. I plan on having one M.2 and two SATA SSDs. the M.2 being the fastest, which should I use that for, the startup drive in which all my CC apps are run on, or should the M.2 be used to hold the video files I am currently editing?So the configuration will either beM.2 - startupSSD #1 - editing filesSSD #2 - cache files-or-M.2 - editing filesSSD #1 - startupSSD #2 - cache files[Moderator note: moved to applicable forum]

I am a freelance editor and work on the go a lot so I need a laptop that can handle Premiere Pro. I need to use it professionally when work doesn't supply an editing computer for me, it's only online content so no 4k.I heard the HP Zbook is good but it's almost $5k, the Dell xps 15 seemed ok too. With CC 19 just coming out, it would be good to look for something that can run it. My budget is $3700 AUD max. 

I'm looking to buy a video editing laptop. I mainly use After Effects, but the laptop needs to be able to run some image editing applications and I'd like some minor gaming too. I want a touch screen with pen support. I know After Effects loves RAM, but I'm not sure how much would be ideal (16GB or more?) and I don't know if a separate GPU would be helpful or not. Portability and weight aren't my main concerns. I would prefer a larger model (13" feels a little small). I'm not a big fan of MacBooks either. I'd rather go with Windows, even if it means a slightly less powerful device. Battery life isn't my biggest concern, but it still needs to be good.The main laptop I've been eyeing is the Microsoft Surface Book 2  15" with 1 TB of storage. The main thing with it I'm concerned about is the RAM, 16GB max. The Dell XPS 15 also looks promising, but I haven't looked into it very much. I'd like to hear what other people think of them and if anyone has any other suggestions please leave

In my newest computer, when I open Premiere Pro CS6 AND After Effects CS6, EVERY program on the computer runs so sloooow and they often freeze up.Windows 10 Pro, Intel i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20 GHz, 8GB RAM, 64 bit.

Hi all,Having crazy issues with Premiere. When trying to preview footage from my HDD (should i move current footage to SSD?) it is very choppy unless I play through the footage few times. Hi all, I’m going to travel full time in a few months and I would like to be able to do what I do on my current desktop. I am a photographer and I sue Lightroom and Photoshop. Recently I started with video and will use premiere pro, but I have a limited budget and since I am going to backpack I need a light laptop. The perfect one would be something like the MSI PS42 8RB which has 16gb of RAM, an i7-8550u and a MX150 GPU or a Dell XPS 13 with the same specs (except for the GPU). Due to limited budget (and wanting to avoid carrying a +£1000 laptop) I would prefer something cheaper. Also the i5-8250u is only 20% slower so it should be enough. My issue is that all laptops will come with 8GB of ram, and the biggest issue is that we are talking about soldered RAM… So, what laptop would you recommend on the 13/14” size, up to 1.5kg with this CPU and that is possible to upgrade to 16gb? Or 8gb will work out?Thank you

Hi, im experiencing lots of stuttering on my Mac and I have no clue what's going on. Can't recall when the issues started, but it's for weeks, maybe months.Every 2 secs Premiere Pro stutters and it doesn't matter what I'm doing. It's stuttering during playback, during scrolling, during moving clips, during hovering over options, during writing something. Made a short video to show what's going on: Stuttering of PP on Mac - YouTube My Mac:iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) 4,2 GHz Intel Core i716 GB 2400 MHz DDR4Radeon Pro 580 8192 MBmacOS Mojave (Version 10.14)Premiere Pro is running in the latest Version.The footage you can see are actually Proxy Files. 720p 1 or 2 Mbits made from 4K footage, so seriously small files. Maybe important to mention these are .mp4 and h264 files. Don't know if it makes any difference.Have none of these problems on my Windows Laptop.Hope anyone can tell me what's going on.Thanks in advance,Daniel

Over the past 9 years I have been travelling constantly and have used a Laptop for my video and photo editing.  I have now returned to a fixed home and I want to buy a desktop computer.  We live in a small town and there is excellent service from a local shop for Dell.Looking at the Dell website the OptiPlex 7060 tower looks good.But it is very confusing (computers are not my strong point.)  If anyone has a recommendation, that would be great!  I can do the customization to make it best for video editing, including a fair amount of 4K.  The only other main use is for photos, Lightroom and PhotoShop.Thank you!  Jim

Hey Guys,I currently have a laptop with an i7 7700hq, gtx1050ti, 8gb ram, and a 1tb HDD. The hard drive makes my computer pretty slow so I was thinking of getting a 1tb SSD in order to speed things up, and upgrading my ram to 32gb. I do quite a lot of 4k editing every week, as well as Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects, and illustrator. My main problem is with premiere pro, as it is a nightmare to edit 4k with additional color grading and other effects. The playback is choppy, and the application often does the "program is not responding" or force quits. I set the playback at 1/8th resolution and is often still very very choppy. I was wondering if upgrading to an SSD and more ram would help. I'd prefer saving money and spending less money on 16gb of ddr4 ram, but I'm willing to spend more for 32gb if it will help out my workflow. Thanks

I am struggling with the Adobe Creative Cloud on my PC, all the apps are working fine but I believe the problem maybe my Intel i7-950 processer is to old and is not coping well with the Adobe Products of today, Todays Intel processor as 7000 times quicker, I have had mine now for 8 years. Could this be the reason why I am struggling to use Adobe products on my PC, I have a Nvidia Graphics card GTX 650 but don't think this is a problem.have a feeling it is time for me to buy a new PC.Any help would be great thanks.Simon

Hello friendsI have just upgraded from a 2011 Mac Mini to a 2018 Mac Mini. On the 2011 I used an HDMI cable and an adapter to connect with my NEC PA231W monitor. The 2018 Mini has 4 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, so I now have the option of using a DisplayPort cable to connect to the monitor. Is there any advantage to doing that vs just sticking to the HDMI to DVI connection?ThanksSteve Rosenblum

If I have erred, please accept my apologies and redirect me if possible. I am in the process of upgrading my computer to a new 2018 Mac Mini and am wondering whether there is any need to consider upgrading my monitor. I presently use a NEC MultiSync PA241W-BK-SV 24.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor with included SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution (including an Xrite sensor) which I purchased in 2011. At the time I bought it it was specified to have a gamut equal to 98% of the Adobe 1998 RGB color space. As far as I can tell it still works fine. However, 7 years is a long time in "Moore's Law tech years", so I wonder what, if anything, the newest monitors have to offer that my present monitor does not? It appears from the descriptions that some have higher resolution and some have "internal calibration" that allows you to switch from Adobe 1998 RGB

Hi all,I recently upgraded my editing PC from a 1050 ti to a 1080 ti, which I was really excited about, but upon running a few render tests, it really seems to do a whole lot of nothing while my CPU is breaking it's back:My issues are:1. I'd like the 1080 ti to carry a bit more of the weight2. I don't want to turn my CPU into a potato chipAm I just misunderstanding the purpose of a high speed GPU? Things seemed a lot more balanced with the 1050 ti. Hi all, I'm working on a Mac with PP CC latest version.  I'm taking over a PP project that was originally done on Windows 7 with (4) NTFS formatted drives.  When I plugged those drives into the Mac via (USB) ports, the Mac was able to see them and I was able to find the offline media to relink to.  Here's the issue, it would see the media and even give the (check symbol) that it was found, however, after SAVING the project, closing it and re-opening the project.  It was if I never did any linking, nothing was saved.Was this an issue of the drives being Window NTFS?  and working on a Mac?My intention is to work in Mac with those NTFS drives reformated to EXFAT.Any help appreciated.

Hi All,I am working off of a Windows PC, 64GB RAM, Ryzen 16 Core, x399 ROG Mobo, attached via 10Gb Lan to a NAS with 8 x 2tb Samsung SSD's in Raid 10.Bench mark tests confirm a 9.5Gb throughput to all editing bays, the only bottleneck is our NVME Drive which slows data transfers down to about 444MB/s or 3.5Gb/sCurrently I am trying to render a short film and the progress bar doesn't move at all. The received packages from the network remain in the kilobytes but then for a half second, transfer rates go up to 2Gb/s, CPU usage goes to 40%, render time goes down by 90%, and then it falls back down. I'm looking at my NAS and it flashes when data is being sent out and it only flashes for the brief half second moments minutes apart. Not experiencing this issue on the other editing bays and haven't experienced this until now on the current machine. This render should take less than 3 minutes and with Resolve it's a dream come true; 100% CPU usage and consistent 2.1Gb/s from the NAS. Not sure

Sorry for mistakes, english is not my main language.After the last upgrade of Adobre Premiere, my old GTX 580 is not longer supported with CUDA. I have to make some upgrades.My current rig is:Intel I7 4770k (stock clock)16GB (4x4 GB DDR3)GTX 580 1.5VRAM240GB SSD for OS120GB SSD temp120GB SSD temp21TB SSD footagefew HDDs and 24" FHD Monitor.In the future I have a plan to buy brand new rig (Ryzen 2700x or Intel I9 with 32GB and 1080 or better) but right now I wolud like to spend less money.Is the GTX 780 3GB VRAM good temporary choise? On second hand market is about 120Euro.I'm using Panasonic GH5 (150Mbit 8bit), DJI Mavic Air (100Mbit) and have big backlog of FHD footage to edit.Second question is about RAM. Selling 4x4GB and buing 4x8GB ald DDR3 is not a good idea, right? My mobo have only 4 slots.Thanks for any solutions. Cheers! Mike

I am currently looking for a new computer as I currently use a iMac to edit Prores and Mp4 footage but it is not really handling it and keeps on crashing.My work colleague has a iMac pro with 14 cores which is a lot better but still not perfect.Has anyone got any suggestions on the best computer to buy for editing pro res and mp4 in premier, or should I just get an iMac pro the same as my colleague?I haven't really got a budget just which ever is the best!Look forward to your responses!
