Hi ACE people!! 👋

This week we’re exploring animation, photography, social media, and podcasting (A personal favorite of mine😉)!

Big idea: Embed projects/assessments into the actual world our students live in. When I read these 3 chapters, what really jumped out at me was the idea that all these projects were based out of the world around us and not just confined to the 4 walls of our students. Oftentimes, we as educators think just within the boundaries of our classroom; the big test, the school year, and oftentimes miss the opportunity to help our students reach out to their own world. I loved the explicit example lessons given for students so they could connect with the world around them and amplify their student voice! 🎙️️

Question for you: When is a time that you've worked with students in amplifying their voice into their world? Did you have any constraints? Is school built for this type of work?

OPTIONAL: Include an image that embodies the 3 chapters. I'll got first:

Image generated by Firefly. Prompt: Create an image of students that embodies student voice with podcasting, social media, photography, in the world around them. In the background include technology, photography, and other images.

When is a time that you've worked with students in amplifying their voice into their world? Did you have any constraints? I have two wonderful experiences where I am privileged to do this. The first is our school's student produced podcast. This group of 5th graders select topics, conduct interviews and edit audio to educate our community of what is happening in our school. The second item is a daily, live student news show where they write the script, create birthday videos, load and launch media that will is viewed during the news show and act as anchors. My colleague and I facilitate the needs of it but offer autonomy in what is written and how they deliver the information.

Is school built for this type of work? This question is pulling on some frustrating strings. YES! Schools can build on this. Our learning platforms, be it human-robotic-web based-could amplify student work. There are more tools than ever for students to create in all art mediums. Think of our schools as one large baking aisle at the grocery store. Anyone can make cookies, however how you make the cookies or what goes in them is up to the chef. The chef will decide the 'extras' that will give it the WOW flavor such as chips, nuts, or different surprises. This is the same for our schools. Our teachers are given a multitude of tools AND have access to learning opportunities that will enhance their activities. Some will opt for the tried-and-true worksheet while others will give them a question like "How do natural resources available in each region of VA affect starting a colony?" then expect the students to build it with Legos and Keva Planks. I think a better question is how to do we encourage the educators to create meaningful activities that amplify student voices?

That's great that your students have the opportunity to create relatable podcasts for the school. I would love to try this at my school. How many students are involved and how often are they produced?

It is considered a leadership team as the students are pulled from class and responsible for what they miss. This year it's 14 students and they have different tasks with each podcast. I'd be happy to share more with you. Let me know if you'd like to set up a Meet.

That would be awesome! This could work with my Beta Club and/or gifted students.

I loved this week's chapters because they introduced me to photography with students, which is something I've never tried but would really like to do. I had to look up what a cyanotype is, and they're beautiful! I think I've seen a "cyan" filter on my phone, but I never knew the history behind it until reading the chapter.

I especially like the focus on amplifying student voices. I once made a fun YouTube video about kindness with my fourth graders and shared it with their parents and the school. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that when you switch districts, your email/Drive/YouTube Channel gets deleted, so I lost the copy. I appreciate that in these chapters, Tim Needles emphasized getting parental permission before posting students or their work online. I had to do the same for my YouTube project. That said, one of the trickiest parts of amplifying student voices is figuring out a comparable alternative assignment for students who don't have permission to participate. This could be a deterrant to teachers doing these kinds of projects in their classrooms.

There is a sixth grade teacher in our state (Utah) who does an EXCELLENT JOB of amplifying his students' voices. If you have some time, check out his YouTube channel @9thEvermore. I love how he lets his students share their voices and creativity! Almost every kid right now wants to be a "content creator" or an "influencer", and podcasting, animations, YouTube, etc. everything mentioned in this chapter helps students find their voice and use it for good. Lawmakers and adults can talk about childrens' problems and feelings all day, but it's much more impactiful coming from them.

Here's my Gemini image creator prompt: Create an image for me of students sharing their voices through podcasting, YouTube, animations, being content creators and influencers. make them Elementary age and all kinds of culture and backgrounds.

You brought up some amazing points here @mskelcan! Whenever it comes to amplifying student voice; we have to be sure to receive consent as those voices don't just belong to the student before 18 🙂

That YouTube channel is 🔥!! I love seeing teachers lean into the "digital creator" role instead of dismissing it right away. I hear that as a complain amoungst teachers and I'm here to show them how

LOVED your AI Image! The ring light in the back with that student was pretty awesome. 😎

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here!
