P: Completely broken Hand tool (PS24.5) Hand Tool Sticking, sticky, not seeing mouse-up

This is a bug. Please don't move it to the Discussions tab.

And please don't merge into another unrelated thread. I will report a bug with this thread.

------------------------------------

I made a YouTube video using a keyboard mouse overlay to show what action I'm taking. I hope you can refer to refer to it.

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y

------------------------------------

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

  1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
  2. Use WacomTablet
  3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
  4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
  5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
  6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

I'm not sure about the >

  1. Mac OS not tested
  2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

I haven't spent as much time in PS as I'd like but so far, it's still working for me too. It must have something to do with the way Photoshop is or isn't detecting whether buttons are held down/clicked etc. Perhaps it's worth one of their tech team increasing "Double-click" speed to maximum (in Windows) so that they can try to reproduce the issue?

Your solution really worked, when I reduced the "Double-click speed" in the mouse tuning section to the lowest level. Very surprising. Thank you very much.

@Issac23625617zdxl ritual apparently worked O_o I had to restart the computer before Photoshop actually loaded the pasted again pref file but other than that... Works so far.

To be clear. it was this solution below ------------------------------------------------------

Here is what I did yesterday. It worked for me and my other team member and we use the Wacom tablets and mouse on a PC. I'm not to tech savvy but I hope this works for those of you still frustrated.

Update to the newest photoshop and close out
Open - C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2023\Adobe Photoshop 2023 Settings
Cut and paste – “Adobe Photoshop 2023 Prefs.psp” to your desktop
Keep this folder open as you’ll come back to it.
Open PS and go to Edit – Preferences – Performance and Uncheck [Use graphics processor] and click OK.

Open old file or creat a new one.

Then go to Filter – Distort and open any of the filters and then Close by “Xing” out in the top right corner. – I did not select OK.
Check the "Use graphics processor" checkbox again close PS
Cut and paste from the desktop – “Adobe Photoshop 2023 Prefs.psp” Back into the folder on your C Drive
Restart photoshop and hopefully this is the fix!

May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor!

It may be a bit early to tell, but I've made one change that seems to have helped. I'll report back in a day or two but encourage others to try this:

Go to your mouse properties in Windows (Win 10 for me), and make sure 'Double-click speed' is set to Slow. I've dragged it all the way to the left which as as Slow as is possible and have noticed a difference since doing so. Remember to restart PS!

On a related note, I have a gaming mouse with a very high DPI/sensitivity, and I think I'm using generic Windows drivers for it as I don't need all of the additional fancy features. I may try installing a new driver for it but in the meantime, it would be good for others to try it out also.

My understanding is that engineering is aware of the issue and working on a fix.

In the meantime, it's a very annoying and production-stopping bug. I managed to finally kill it by resetting preferences - but in v25.0 I had to do it several times. In v24 it was enough to do it once. I deleted the whole settings folder every time.

I know, that doesn't make any sense. Why should the 4th reset be any more effective than the first or second?

But the way it looks to me, this is some kind of preference interference or conflict. In between the resets, I tried turning on/off any setting that seemed related (overscroll, spring-loaded, flick panning, etc).

On my work machine the second reset did it. On my home machine, armed with the knowledge that it was possible, I had to do it four times. But then it finally worked, and both machines seem stable now.

So don't give up. Try again.

Edit - oh, and I still managed to end up with the preferences I want, that I started out with. So it doesn't seem to be any specific setting.

@D Fosse I haven't had that issue with both 24.7 or 25.0, running both on Windows 10 and Windows 11, although I have seen many threads about it on the forum, so it does seem to be an issue for some people.

When I installed version 25.0 it brought over my preferences from version 24.7 and everything worked fine, which actually surprised me.

Can't remember a new version carrying over the preferences correctly but it did with version 25.0, not having any issue with version 25.0 at the moment, seems pretty stable at the moment for me at least

I'm experiencing this bug, with the cursor/tool getting stuck on-click, and not releasing. No troubleshooting attempts have worked to correct this. It's very disrupting to my work flow.  This is so very frustrating. PLEASE FIX THIS.

I guess you have to use Generative fill to change hand cursor to regular cursor 😉

Version 25.0 still has this issue
