P: Photoshop 23.0 - cannot open TIF files, generated in other programs

Starting from version 22.5.2 Photoshop stopped opening some tif files. The issue is related to a previously discovered vulnerability, the escalation of which, under certain conditions, may lead to arbitrary code execution - Adobe Security Bulletin.

Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications

A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge).

We all hope that Adobe can solve this problem and find a way to bring third-party files to modern standard. But I recommend that you independently contact the developers of programs whose files Photoshop cannot open. Notify them of the problem, recommend to contact @J453 using this community. Jeffrey can provide technical information to developers to solve this problem.

Someone mentioned about opening 'un-openable' Tif's in Bridge via right-clicking and pick; 'Open in Camera Raw'. Yes, this works but my 32bit Tifs only open in Camera Raw as 8bit Tifs. So if your Tifs are 8 bit you are OK for the time being (with this workflow) but that's it for the moment it looks like!

What do I do when de oldest version I can download i v.22.5.2 - where the problem also exist? Why can't I go back further in the version-history?

I have the same issue, and in excess of 10k of tif files to work on using automated processes (so manually opening single files is not feasible).

As others have noted, there is no prior version available that does not have this bug. Would it be possible to make at least the last version without this bug (22.5.1?) available again so that we can work while this being resolved?

Our team has run into the same issue with the only two versions available (23 and 22.5.2) via Creative Cloud.

Yes, I can only install previous version 22.5.2 and it gives the same error.

I can't open geoTIFF image in the new release 23.0.0.

I was able to open the exact same TIFF image in previous version of Photoshop (22)

Error: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

Image: 18000 x 18000 px, 375 MB, 96dpi, 32 bit depth

Same here! I'm just trying to re-process some *.tif downloads from the Defra Survey download portal and I get exactly the same thing. Just installed the previous version of Photoshop (22.5.2) and I get the same thing again. Have the Adobe Tif extensions been updated in the new PSD release?

Has this been assigned a CERT vulnerability number?

I don't see an option to install Photoshop v. 22.5.1.  I can only go back to v.22.5.2, which I tried doing, but it has the same problem as v. 23 of not opening TIFFs from other programs.

This change was originally made to reject Tiff files that lacked an attribute which could pose a security risk. Engineering is working on a change to amend that behavior to calculate the missing attribute when not provided, but only under the constraint that the calculation can be made with fidelity and not cause the security vulnerability.

For now, you can install the prior version to open tiffs from a trusted source. Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps

We'll update this thread when the fix/update is released.
