P: Photoshop 23.0 - cannot open TIF files, generated in other programs

Starting from version 22.5.2 Photoshop stopped opening some tif files. The issue is related to a previously discovered vulnerability, the escalation of which, under certain conditions, may lead to arbitrary code execution - Adobe Security Bulletin.

Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications

A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge).

We all hope that Adobe can solve this problem and find a way to bring third-party files to modern standard. But I recommend that you independently contact the developers of programs whose files Photoshop cannot open. Notify them of the problem, recommend to contact @J453 using this community. Jeffrey can provide technical information to developers to solve this problem.

Kukurykus... I can use MAC Preview to make a 16bit PNG that PS will read. It's an extra pain, but I can ignore any PS upgrades from now on at least.

What application were these saved in that caused them not to open in Photoshop?

I've asked engineering to take a look. Please let us know what application saved these files such that they won't open anymore.

Good morning, since yesterday when I installed the new version of PS 2022, it has not been able to open 32-bit .tiff files and some 16-bit files cannot open them when with PS 2021 you do it without problems. Someone can tell me what is the reason for this problem. The error message is the following "COULD NOT BE COMPLIED BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE CORRECT FILE TYPE"
My operating system is Windows 10 64 bits
I appreciate the help.

Hi @carlos1587,

Thanks for sharing the file with us. I was unable to open it too. I have tried a workaround here: Open the tiff file with Photoshop 22.5.1 version and save it > Reopen it with Photoshop 23.0 and it should work for you. I would suggest you do it with only those files which you received from a trusted source.

Thanks,

Mohit

I'm having the same problem. TIFF files from Deep Sky Stacker that I was able to open a few days ago can no longer be opened in either of the two versions of PS that are currently available. As a workaroud I have to open the files in GIMP, export them (as TIFF files) and then open in PS. Not what I'm paying for. Is it time to cancel PS and invest in Pixinsight?

They can be opened in CC 2022 after unlocking background & locking it back and resaving a file in CS6.

Thanks for the information.

Just a couple of days ago, I opened them in CC 22 (and I can open them now if I restore the system from a backup - most likely this is due to the fact that CC 22 was updated with preservation of the settings from previous versions (at least from CC 19)).
Now I've done a clean install of CC 22 and they won't open either 😞

I couldn't open them in CC 2022, but could in CS6 EXTENDED.

Then I could preview them in Bridge CS6 and Bridge version 12.
