FrameMaker

Hi, I have installed FrameMaker 2019, the English version, on Windows 10. Naturally, the DITA templates in ..\Structure\xml\DITA\outputTemplates are installed in English. However, I need these templates in some other foreign languages as well. So, I thought to edit the english texts that appear in the end PDF to those other languages. To this end, I went through the body, master and reference pages. I managed to edit most of the text in other languages. However, some texts seem to be locked, such as the word "chapter" or "Appendix" in the reference page of the TOC template. I would like to have them translated in the corresponding language of the book as well. Is there way to achieve this via FrameMaker?Hadi

Just wrapping up two manuals when suddenly, in any book I update, custom master pages are not applied and are replaced with the default left/right master page, and I have to reapply any custom pages in each book document. When I try to update a book file, in the Book Error Report I get a "No master pages applied because the MasterPageMaps table contains no mapping information."    I've never seen this message in my 25+ years of using Framemaker, and none of my reference pages contain a master page map, and all has been well. So suddenly Framemaker is messing up any book I update. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm using the 2017 online version. Thank you.

I have a copy of the DITA templates in a local directory in order to be able to customize them. For instance, on the title page in stead of the adobe logo, I have an image of a product "by reference". Since this image needs to be replaced for every product, I decided to do this by reference. Now, when I use the publish button in order to generate a book with fm components, FrameMaker creates the fm cmponents in the %temp% folder then generates the pdf in the location that I have specified. One problem with this approach is the fact that the reference of the image is replaced partly by the address of the %temp% folder and partly by the location of the local title page template. Consequently, the images is grayed out. Is there a way to force FrameMaker to create the fm components in a user-defined location or to avoid changing the reference?

Hi,we inserted in FM 12 videos by hypertext link. Now we are switching to FM 2019 and we try to simplify our working methods.Now we insert mp4 files by reference and  generate output.The next images illustrate the problems with HTML5 and chm output.HTML 5 output: the mp4 videos get unreadable after blend out some conditions and/or work with the output filter.chm output: mp4 videos don't start. Did anyone knows the 2problems? do you know a workaround?

Using Windows 7 and FrameMaker 2019, newest version.Me and my collegue (both on different computers, one in network, the other stand-alone), have following very bad crash problems. Example:A FrameMaker file consists of xx pages. Each page contains tables, graphics, images, and formatted headings/texts. There are no manual page breaks.I want to delete a table on one page, so the image on the next page slides to that page. FrameMaker hangs or freezes.Or: A table on page 2 automatically breaks at the end of the page, so the following lines are on the next page 3. On page 1 I delete 4 lines completely, so the table should "get" the following lines from the next page - crash.Or: On one page there are 3 pictures or graphics, on the next also. If I delete 2 images on one page, FrameMaker should retrieve one or two images from the next page on the resulting space - crash.FramMaker always crashes or freezes when content is to be "fetched" over a page change. I'm the lone technical writer for a team of hardware and software engineers. Our team has used Word for our documentation needs, but I convinced my PM to purchase me a FM license to explore its potential usefulness. I've learned the basics of moving a Word file into FM, and have updated the document I moved to my satisfaction. However, I cannot find any information on how to update a FM file with newer versions of the Word file. This is important because my program has only allowed for one FM license, and my PM doesn't want our engineers to have to learn FM. Rather, they will continue to use Word. When they update a particular document version in Word, I will need to ingest that newer version into the older document version in FM. Is there any easy way to incorporate Word document updates into a FM document?  Thanks! Travis

I`m using since several years FrameMaker 8 and now I want to change to the current release of FrameMaker (Release 2019). Hi All,I like to remove with an ESTK file all changes bars of a FM file.If the Doc.ClearAllChangebars() command may be used to clear the global change bar setting of a FM file, it does not remove nor change any CharTag that may use a ChangeBar style defined in the Character Catalog.I am able to find all CharTags equal to ChangeBar in a FM file and get its character string.But I am stuck to change a CharTag font definition and set it equivalent to the definition of <Default Para Font> of the Character Catalog.Have you any suggestion to do it?Thanks,JM

something happened, and now it does not do "Save as PDF"   erros message "Framemaker could not find Adobe PDF printer instance, which must be installed to execute Save as PDF command."   I did reinstalling FrameMaker 2019 (64b), but no change.  FM does print to PDF.

I'm working with a re-installed version of FM 2017 on files/books that were completed by the previous tech writer. I'm in the process of creating new files to add to the book - everytime I try to save, I Save As .fm, but when I go to the source folder, the document is listed as a .PDF.  All the other files saved by the previous writer are listed as .fm docs.  I have scoured the forums for any insight as to why this might be happening but have not been able to find any information. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello FrameMaker users,   I need to get Doxygen output (API docs) into a professional-looking format.   1. Is FrameMaker the right tool for this, or is there something better to use? 2. If FrameMaker is the right tool, should I go with structured or non-structured FM? 3. What Doxygen output format is the best to begin working with? (RTF, XML, PDF?!?, ...) 4. Is there an alternative to Doxygen output? (Maybe that's a better first question since it's higher-level...)   Any recommendations, tips, pointers, etc. would be most welcome, since at the moment Word is my default option (ew). I have some preliminary ideas and guesses, but I'd appreciate advice from someone who has actual experience with Doxygen output.   --Laura   P.S.  I'm a career tech writer and quite familiar (15+ years) with unstructured FrameMaker, and love it for tech docs. I've used most of the other tools, too (25+ years).

Lost the column with the book and associated files listed (33.png was what it looked like before; 22.png is what I get today). So, when I open a book, I don't see the list of sub-files/chapters. How do I get this back? Framemaker 2019    

I would like to create a table of topics in framemaker and in the output the user should be able to click a corresponding topic icon and have the description of that topic drop or collapse from the topic title rather than jump to another page; is there a way to do this using Framemaker 2019?

Hello community! I have a problem with a .book file in FM2019. I have several different links on several different documents of the book and the links are supposed to refer to the other files in that same book. However, it seems that at some point while I'm working with the files they always change back to being this one and same link directing to the one and same file. Why does this happen and why changing and updating the links back to the files which they should lead to won't hold? Am I missing some point at which is shoul save the link changes or what? Or should I do something with the ditamap I made the book from and not with the book's fm files?Update: it seems that if I update the book, the links do this. Thanks for all the help and advice!

Is it possible to create html5 (or htm) files from ditamaps in FM2019 without Robohelp? Or save ditamap as html file? I Have ditamaps which I should turn into webhelp. I know how to publish them as responsive html5 and view the output. But what happens after that? If I click on File > Save ditamap as... and choose HTML format and change the file tag on the file from .htm to html5 or html the htm file created is only a list of topics and titles a files.    If I look at the Responsive html5 output view created with "Publish" pod and opened in my browser, and right click, choose >Save page as it creates html with absolute path, not relative, which I would apparently need.   Or is it so, that I have to make the ditamap into a .book file first? If so, how to go on from .book file?   It feels like I cannot be far from the answer since I am able to publish the ditamaps as responsive html5 and view the output and the output looks a lot like what the webhelps should ev

Hi! I am publishing a .book to html5 and as I view the output, my browser cannot find one page eventhough the path and the location seems is correct. Now, in Framemaker sturcture view the said file shows as "book component" not as "topic" as all the other files. Is this the problem and how do I fix it?

Hello. I have FrameMaker 2017 (14.0.4.511) running on Windows 10 Enterprise 1803 (17134.885). I don't use FrameMaker every day. Today, I am unable to save as a PDF a 58-page, three-chapter-plus-cover-and-TOC book; FrameMaker stops responding, and Distiller does not start running. I also tried printing it using the Adobe PDF print driver, and that also froze FrameMaker. When I then tried saving a 14-page, two-chapter-plus-cover-and-TOC as PDF, Distiller ran but the job failed. Please help. Thank you.

Hi, I would like to use a bracket shape somehow in order to capture an area of an image, rather than have to use multiple arrows.  In essence, to draw a rectangle and then cleanly have ONE side disappear to replicate a bracket ( ] ) would be ideal, but I cannot figure out how to manipulate a rectangle to accomplish removing one side.  How do I create a bracket to use as a call-out over an image?  (Example of what I'd like to do in Framemaker is attached, see call-out "C").

I'm having an intermittent issue with dialog boxes during printing/publishing.   The first instance of this was while I was using Print Book, Adobe PDF as the Printer, and the Print Book As: Separate Print Job for Each Document checked. It got through some of the files before it seemed to just stop. After playing around for a minute, I realized that the dialog box to Save As was present, but not visible anywhere that I could get to it. In Windows 10, I can hover over the active app icon for Frame in the toolbar and actually see it. I just can't GET to it. I've tried everything I can think of: Alt+Tab, hover and click on the preview, clear the desktop and select, and even dancing a little manic jig in an act of propitiatory magic. I was forced to end task through the Task Manager. On 2 subsequent attempts, I had variations on this that I was able to resolve seemingly randomly. Hi, We are trying to publish our existing set of FM documentation into the Responsive HTML 5 format using FM 2019 but instead of the chapter title, we are getting the FM file name in the help TOC. Is there a way to get the chapter title listed in the help output without changing the file names?   Thanks in advance, Rehan

Greetings,Our guys are using Framemaker build 11.0.2.384. When they open some of their books  and perform a save operation they receive Internal Error: 11024, 22215748, 22269761, 22287647. They dont even have to change anything. Just open the book and try to make a copy of it with "Save book as". They report the faulty books are usually the relatively larger ones.
