In Framemaker 2015 I Have a Ditamap with various nested Concepts, Topics and References. When publishing to HTML 5, the hierarchy always puts Topics and References at the top level. For exampleDitamap Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3 Task 1 Reference 1 Concept 4 Task 2 Reference 2Results in a HTML 5 output of:Map Name Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3 Task 1 (should be nested under Concept 3) Reference 1 (should be nested under Task 1)
Hello,I have a licensed version of Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2017. I use FM and RH almost daily.I noticed that every few days on either of the software the license prompt reappears asking me to re-enter the license key.Is there a way to save it permanently until the software is uninstalled manually? Each time digging out the license and entering it is tedious.Any suggestions on how to fix this?............-Tejas
I am just working on a book with a few chapters, one chapter is very long and now i can´t add any further pages. So is there a maximum of pages I can add to one chapter? (My chapter has now 108 pages)Thank you
Running FM 2017 Release Version 14.0.2.425 on a Win7 Pro (Svc Pack 1 Build 7601) HP Z420 Workstation w/ Intel Xeon CPU (desktop PC), I'm finding it impossible to get straight single quotes to display correctly in my FM document, even though the Format>Document>Text Options>Smart Quotes checkbox is not enabled. Double quotation marks appear perfectly fine as expected, but single quotation marks always appear as single closing "smart" quotation marks. Any suggestions? Thank You!
Is it possible to convert a sgml file to xml in FrameMaker? If so, how? Thanks.
Hi everyone,I recently found a script posted by Adobe in 2011 that removes all unused paragraph, table, and character styles from every file in a book. It proved to be extremely helpful.http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/10/extendscript-of-the-week-deleting-unused-formats-in-a-book.html I need also to remove unused object styles from several books. Does anyone know where to locate such a script? I haven't used the current scripting tool so it would take me a very (very) long time to edit the one Adobe provided. Also - no need to recreate the wheel, right? Thanks in advance,Diane
Following on from a deeeeep post earlier, I have a pared down question. In our docs there are many images in anchored frames where the frames use Anchoring Position "At Insertion Point".When I tried to publish to html5, these frames don't appear in the output. We use three of the possible positions overall in our docs -- At Insertion Point, Run into Paragraph, and Below Current Line.I simply changed the position of one of the images that didn't display and got the following results:- At Insertion Point -- frame does not display, line before and after the image print one after the other, nothing to indicate the image should have been there.- Run into Paragraph -- same result- Below Current Line -- this one worksQuestion -- Is this the expected behaviour? (I'm fine if it is, just want to know if I'm doing missing something here.)Thanks!
For reference, I'm working in a table, maybe that has something to do with it.The autonumbering format is working fine, but somewhere in the middle, it just stops working. I'm using the formula: A:< >< >< >< >< >< >< >< >< >< ><n+>.< =0>< >< >\t (yes I understand it's long, even getting rid of "the fat" it still won't work correctly). What it does is instead of 1,2,3 etc. it's just all 1's. Even when I use a+ instead of n+ it's just all a's. The formula is the EXACT same throughout the entire table, but it just doesn't work.Getting rid of the "A:" works BUT I need it. For example:My table will have different sections so it'll say:Title1. Info2. Info3. InfoAnother Title1. Info2. Info3. InfoI can't have the numbering to continue for it to be through 6, it has to start over WITHIN the one table. Therefore I'll tag the title to have "A:" in it, that seems to do the trick to reset the numbers after the title
It's been a while (several months) since I had to generate responsive HTML from my docs, and need some tips.Content is to be delivered as .pdf (that's the norm), and as html5.Content that I recall posed problems for me in the past, and content that is posing problems right now, includes the following, which I've had to address by duplicating the content and turning it into conditional text. What I'd like to know is if there are settings that can be done to address the issues without having to use conditions (and duplicated content). Any help is appreciated 🙂Tables - Our documents have room for on the left for side heads. So, tables that fit in the main text area (not extending into side heads) are Left justified. If a table is too wide (must start somewhere in the side-head area and extend to the right-hand margin), it gets set as right-justified.That works fine for .pdf. However, for html5, the right-justified tables anchor on the right edge of the webpage. So, the only soluti
I am running my FM 2015 on a VMware fusion with Windows 10 OS on a Macbook. While generating a FM book, I came across the following book error report: Could'nt update this book because it contains no openable nongenerated files" This book can generate a PDF on a different Windows machine and tested. Please help me with a suitable solution to address this issue so that I can generate a PDF.
Hey folks,I'm relatively new to FrameMaker (done the Lynda course, been doing a few practice documents, transitioning our existing IPCs from Word to FrameMaker 11), and I'm running across a fairly niche situation I haven't found a good solution to yet. Here's an example of our existing IPC table format in Word:In the table pictured above, there are "Thin" column rules between all of the columns except Fig/Item and the two straddled Effectivity columns. Fairly bog-standard as far as parts catalog tables go, but I'm having a tough time duplicating it in FrameMaker for the following reason:I am only allowed one exception to the table column format rules, not two or more. Now to be clear, I know about the Custom Ruling and Shading control, but given the number of rows a table like this can have (it can range up to the hundreds) and how often we have to delete/add items to various places in the list, I'd like to avoid them if possible. Is there a way to have two exceptions to the rule instea
I am not familiar with Framemaker, but we are using Arbortext to create a government document/manual. I hate the Arbortext, but I was told Adobe couldn't import the DTD files. Is there anything I cannot do in Adobe that I can in Arbortext??
Hi all, Does anyone know if you can format a single FrameMaker document (not in a book) to have preliminary pages with roman numeral page numbers and then switch to normal numbers on the main subject matter. I know how to do this in a book but want to do it in a single document, I have set up separate master pages for the preliminary pages but do not know how to change the <$pagenum> building block to be roman numerals. MS Word haters like myself do not want to have to use Word where you have to create new sections etc. but I do not always want to create a book for shorter documents.
Hi, I'm a fairly novice user of FrameMaker. When I work with fm files (doesn't happen very often) I do so on an already fully complete layout. So technically I don't have to create anything from scratch but rather alter an existing content - for the most part rather minimaly. I'm aware of FM's interfaces (unstructured, structured and XML) and was wondering:Can you tell if a project (a file or a set of files/Book) is of structured or unstructured, so that I know in which interface to use before opening a file?Does it make any difference if I open a structured document in an unstructured FM interface, and vice versa? Can such file still be opened and worked on correctly? Is there a save bet (default interface choice) that I can use for opening an FM file if I don't know which interface was used origionally?Thank you
I inherited a suite of documents in FrameMaker 12 that had all the page layouts, paragraphs, and references created. This is my first time working with FM, so I still find the menus a bit confusing. Our corporate branding recently changed, and I need to move the auto-numbering in the Chapter Title style outside of the left margin. The example below shows how the numbering is currently aligned with the left margin. I've tried the paragraph designer, master pages, but I can't figure out how to set a negative indent. An anchored frame doesn't seem to be the correct approach, because the content outside the margin is only text. I know how to fix this in Word or CSS, but can't figure it out in FM. Please help. Thanks!
Does anyone have advice on setting up the EDD created from the CMM DTD provided in the ATA iSPEC 2200 Standard? I'm having a difficult time trying to modify the EDD to format the front matter and pageblock pages the way the spec says it should, specifically involving the Title element option of the Topic and Subtask elements.
I just downloaded FrameMaker 2017 Eval copy, but I cannot install it. The Akamai Download Manager Installer is stuck in the "Waiting" mode. I am using Windows 7, 64-bit PC.I am sure others have seen this problem. How to go past this screen and actually install the product?ThanksTarlochan Nahal
Been searching for two days and cannot find an answer, but for Responsive HTML output from Framemaker, is there any way to customize the launch file from "index.html"? We want to move to responsive help for all our apps, but as much as we always insisted they should launch from an "index.html" page, they all have a custom one.Is there a setting I'm missing or anything in the files that also needs to be updated if you need a different launch name?- V
How do you nest ditamaps so that the html treats them as expandable sections?I have Ditamap1 that contains Ditamap2 and Ditamap3Each map has a <title>Name of map</title> elementDitamap2 contains topic1, topic2, topic3Ditamap3 contains topic4, topic5, topic6Currently, when I output to html5 or pdf I get a flat file:topic1topic2topic3topic4topic5topic6What I'd like is:Ditamap2-title (expand-collapse) topic1 topic2 topic3Ditamap3-title (expand-collapse) topic4 topic5 topic6CheersPeter
Anyone know why the text in this table is dropping below the bottom of the page? Its crossing over the page# and footer line at the bottom, instead of continuing on to the next page. When I continue entering text it drops below and I can no longer see what I'm typing. I need it to continue on the next page, like a good table should do. Help.Brett
We use FrameMaker for desktop publishing of traditional tech manuals. We have recently begun transitioning to SVG for illustrations, as we often develop web applications (interactive electronic tech manuals) in parallel, and SVG is fully supported by modern web browsers. Unfortunately, we've had several issues with SVG in FrameMaker:Inserted SVG images lose styles if SVG <style> node does not include type="text/css" attribute. According to the W3C spec, the default is "text/css", hence this is extraneous, and therefore some applications omit it.Other applications with SVG support do not seem to have this limitation. We are working around this issue by adding the type attribute to the <style> node prior to insertion in FrameMaker.FrameMaker requests DPI settings when inserting an SVG. We find this peculiar, since SVG is a vector format. Our best guess is that some sort of calculation is taking place between width, height, and viewbox attributes.W
Hi All,In the Paragraph Designer, for BulletIndent, when I try to remove the tab stop, it does not delete. When I try to create a new tab stop at 1", it appears for a moment, and then disappears. Is there a fix for this issue? The same thing happens when I try to create a new paragraph tag. The tab stops won't delete/set.
Hi there,I've come across what seems to be unusual behaviour when wrapping part of my structured footnote into a “footnote italics” element and I am hoping that somebody can explain to me what’s going on. The screenshot below shows the final text:And the screenshot below shows the structure of one footnote element:Finally, this third screenshot depicts what happens when I wrap part of the second footnote to a “footnote italics” element:The wrapped element has a character format applied to it as specified by the EDD, but the rest of the text in the footnote element (which uses a 'footnote' paragraph format in the EDD) reverts to body text. Changing the footnote element to a footnote element corrects the formatting (and leaves the subelement in italics), nevertheless I would still like to understanding why it is happening in the first place...Best regards,Adrian
I use structured tables in my documents for information boxes. Recently, I've changed their structure, adding a header row, renaming the element, and using a different format tag. When I change the element in a document, it does so, but doesn't add a header row automatically (though does in part implement the new format tag) -- is there some way to do a global update of all information boxes (so that they include the newly created header row)? Also, just to note the new style information boxes (again which are implemented as structured tables) are different elements to the old style information boxes (to solve some naming consistency issues). I was (perhaps naively) hoping that changing the old element names to the new element names would implement the formatting tags associated with the new elements over the old elements (and insert the header row)...
If I have the 2017 perpetual license (trial) version of FrameMaker, can I successfully share files back and forth with someone who has the subscription license version? Thanks.
