FrameMaker

I am using FrameMaker 11.I had a FrameMaker crash. As a result, three .fm files in my book became .mif files.I saved the .mif files as .fm files, and then re-imported them into the book.After I close out of the book overnight, the .fm files revert to .mif files.How can I permanently make the .fm extension stick?

Hi all,Frame 12, xDocbook app.We have multiple table formats, a few of which require different para tags than the bulk of the table formats.  I understand that any para tags applied to the first header row and first body row of a table become part of that table's format, so those tags are retained when you add a new table.That works for a non-structured doc, i.e. I create a new table based on Format A, and the para tags are different than a new table based on Format B, as I want.  But when I open a structured doc and add a table, the para tags are not applied.  Well, they are applied for all the tables that use Para Tag A -- most of our tables -- but not the tables that use Para Tag B.  I do not define a Para tag in the EDD for any table, i.e. I have this:If context is: * < TBodyNo additional formattingSo I don't see how the EDD is overwriting anything in the Table format itself.I understand that Frame uses the attribute "tabstyle" to define the table's format, b

After updating the default task.eddmod.edd document, I have:Created a dtd from the updated edd.Opened Structure Tools > Structure Application Designer. Selected existing application (dita_1.2_task), selected my updated edd, dtd, and task.template, and saved it.The new elements I created in the edd appear in my application now.Do I need to create a dtd and update the structure application designer every time I update my edds?

Hi,I'm new to Framemaker. I was tasked to create user manuals, process documents, guides, SOPs for my company and they want to use framemaker to assist. I never used this software but I have most my documentations in Ms Word, Excel and Powerpoint, etc.There are soooooo many features in framemaker and I dont know where to start, can someone please tell me the most frequently used features to assist me in these documentations? I'm trying to type a Unicode character and a nonbreaking space in a variable. The definition is \space\u00d7\space.On the page, the variable text is displayed as:pacexpacewhere "x" is the Unicode character.Other types of spaces in the variable work fine. However, "\space" does not work with non-Unicode characters in a variable.Any ideas?Regards, Catherine

Hi,FM11 frequently crashes on opening a book file, with the internal error 11004. Even after having deleted the .lck (lock) file, we still cannot open the book and need to create a new one. Some book files contain many files, other only a few.This is a major and blocking issue encountered by a few technical writers in our team.Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

I just updated to FrameMaker 12 and wonder if they (Adobe) messed something up or I'm just missing something...With all my conditions showing, I have no unresolved x-refs. When I set my conditions to "Per Condition," I get unresolved x-refs. So it's referencing something in my "not showing" condition. Cool. No problem. But when I highlight the unresolved reference and turn all my conditions on, my unresolved x-ref is no longer in front of me...because of the page count difference with all conditions showing, I have to go search for my highlighted, unresolved x-ref. Annoying! In FM 11, your page view would stay on your highlighted text. I can still resolve my x-ref, but it's just more work now than before because you have to scroll through your document to find where you were. Ick. Anyone else experience this? Is there a way around it? Thanks.

my colleagues and I frequently encounter FM11 crashes when updating or creating cross references, usually when working with books, and when creating or solving cross references across various files in the book, for example when updating the revision history.The internal errror is most often referenced 11004. There can be a few crashes a day for some of us.Is anyone else in the community encountering teh same issue?

Hi,I am creating with the following components (in the following order): Title Page, Table of Contents, Introduction (Front Matter), Chapters 1-5. Ideally I would like the components to each start on a right odd page. I have applied the right master page for each first page, however, in some cases, the total number of pages for a preceeding component is odd, which is leaving/adding a blank last page. Is there a way for the preceeding even page (if its blank) to have its footer hidden? Right now it is blank but the footer still indicates the page number and I would like that to be gone. Or do I have to create a special master page?Thanks!

We use FM10 and have source files, books, and content files all housed on our company network (server). They are in various folders.  Is there a way to copy or move all of them to like someone's desktop computer, or to a network (server) in another location?  And have all the links maintain?I think it's common, but for example, we have a FM book with several chapters (files).  Within each chapter are numerous insets (more files).  Within the insets are text and pictures.  The Book and chapters are in the same folder.  But all the insets, and pictures within all the insets, are in various folders. So we want to copy or move everything off the network and put it on either a desktop computer, or onto a different network (that doesn't connect to our network).My initial thought is that all the links will be broken.Thanks for any ideas.

Hello, I used to be able to copy a PPT slide from slide sorter mode and paste it into FrameMaker and the slide would auto-fit inside the auto-created frame on my page. Now my slide is way too big for the frame. Does anyone recall how to make the slide automatically fit within the auto-created frame? I've tried this in Framemaker 8 and 12.Thanks

When I create a paragraph tag and have it set to underline set in the Character Format section, it looks to be changing how the letter/number looks on screen. For our documents we use Century Schoolbook as the font (its a customer requirement).Example:1. Blah blah blah2. Blah blah blah(a). Blah blah blah(1). Blah blah blah(2). Blah blah blahIn our document the (2) would look different than what the font looks like in the non-underline 2. above, even though same font and same size.Any suggestions or thoughts on why the font changes?

HiUsing FM10I have blank lines that do not show up as \P (carriage returns) and I do not see a anchored frame.I took a screen snapshot, between the text "In this context" there are all these blank lines. Is theresome "view" in FM10 that will show what's hidden? You can see there are no paragraphs (carriage returns)in the blank section, at the bottom of the image there is a carriage return after mechanism.--Ross

Hello -I am encountering a problem saving a .fm file as a .xml file. I have saved many .fm files as .xml files in the past with no issues. However, lately FM crashes with a "serious error" on certain files when I try the same save process. My initial thought was that the file was somehow corrupted, but this morning I ran into this scenario: I have 3 FM licenses in my office, I was trying to save a .fm file as .xml and FM kept crashing. So I had another co-worker try to save the exact same file as a .xml file and it WORKED!?!?!?!We all were using FM 11, but I have since installed FM 12 thinking that version 12 wouldnt have the same problem, but the same issue is happening with both versions of FM. I read that FM has issues when working across a network so I have tried it both ways, across the network and locally and the same issue occurs.Again, this problem occurs occasionally on various files - not every file, but as previously mentioned I was able to successfully save a file on a diff

I recently had my computer upgraded and no longer have local admin access, so I cannot edit the maker.ini file stored in FrameMaker's installation directory. I can edit the maker.ini stored in my account's directory structure.I wanted to get FrameMaker to use the system cursor, which I have set to Windows Extra Large inverted. I edited my copy of maker.ini to add "UseSystemCursor = On". but it had no effect. Other changes I made in this file were accepted. I looked at the maker.ini file in FrameMaker's directory and found that it had the line "UseSystemCursor=Off". I ended up having to get IT to change it for me and it works now.But now I don't understand the relationship between the user's maker.ini and the one in FrameMaker's installation directory. I thought that the user's file would take priority and override any settings that were in the maker.ini file in FrameMaker's directory. This does not seem to be the case. I am afraid that other changes I may want to make may be ignored be

Hello fellows,The Framemaker file/book comparison utility seems to be a half-baked feature that is incapable of showing differences between 2 versions of a table/figure. Moreover, when a table is deleted, the CMP file does not clearly show that, unless you check the table anchor and see that it is conditionalized as Deleted. Unfortunately, the comparison utility has not been improved much in FM12. Has any of you tried extending the capabilities of the comparison utility through scripting? AFAIK, the Extendscript compare() function parameters do not allow improving too much, so alternative ways should be used.Thanks for your input in advance!

pagemaker 7.1 - Is there an easy way to update just the header from 1 book to another. I have multiple books - each book has the same header information. I have changed 1 page of the header information that I would like to update to all of the other files in other books.example:book 1 - dog       book 2 - catbegals                tabby  collies                blackterriers               siameselabs                   persianIn this example - the header for beagle is exactly the same as the header for tabby, the header for collies is the same as  black and so on.

I'm getting a little closer on having the Contents listing of my Microsoft HTML Help file looking the way I want it.Here's what I want (from one done the "old" way)Selecting the "Printer Properties" "book", displays info on Printer Properties.Opening the "Printer Properties" "Book" but selecting Printer Properties displays the same screen as above.But clicking on one of the sub topics displays info on it (as expected)But when I try to get the same effect with one converting from FrameMaker, I get this:In the Contents tab, the "Book" is repeated for each entry, rather than the topics subbed under one book entry. I am editing a FrameMaker 11 document with some text that is hyperlinked to a website. Earlier PDFs output fine. When I created the last PDF, some of the text disappeared in the PDF, but it's still visible in FM. On the PDF, the hyperlink is active in the blank space and it works to go to the website. Specifically the hyperlinked text is part numbers in a table with a shaded background--I mention this because if I open a page of the defective PDF in Illustrator--the text that has disappeared is behind the shaded square. Some of the hyperlinked part numbers are visible in the PDF--this seems almost random. It's not just part numbers or rows where I have edited something. I'm editing the document, I didn't create it. My background is InDesign and I am a novice in FrameMaker. Appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

We are trying to create OnLine Help (chm) files from FrameMaker 12. I've figured out some of the mapping, but one whole area has me stumped!
