Hi, colleaguesI have problem with using references to illustrations in FM, and thus in PDF documents (I use TCS 5, and therefore FrameMaker 12.02.389 is active). Still the same problem exists for FrameMaker 11 from TCS 4.Steps:I’ve created a Paragraph Style to apply for figure’s captions. Let us assume it is called “Figure_Caption”.I apply this style for every caption of illustration.I place every illustration’s caption UNDER an illustration. Then, I create cross-references to the required illustrations using that existing “Figure_Caption” paragraph style.Create a PDF file.Problem: The reference works almost. However, in PDF file it shows the “caption” on the top of the referred page. In other words, even the referred illustration is located in the middle of page, a caption appears at the top. So reader needs to scroll up a page in order to see the referred illustration itself. This annoys our customers and me to. Expected results:I would expect that clicking a reference to a specific i
Is there any way to customize which columns you see in the Markers Pod (for example, I'd like to add Heading 3)?Thanks

With FM 12 and fdk 12 the F_ApiEnableUnicode(True) returns -1. Help me pls. The function is not working, with FM 10 I haven't this kind of problem. I tested the following code as described in fdkprogrammerguide.pdf and the result is incorrect, it displayed the same characters both with Unicode disabled / enabledF_ApiEnableUnicode(False);F_ApiAlert("This is Unicode: \xC3\xA4 \xEB\xAE\xA4 \xD8\xB4",FF_ALERT_CONTINUE_NOTE);F_ApiEnableUnicode(True);F_ApiAlert("This is Unicode: \xC3\xA4 \xEB\xAE\xA4 \xD8\xB4",FF_ALERT_CONTINUE_NOTE);
Hi all, there is some Information in the Framemaker help how to nest tables in structured documents but I simply don't understand how to implemend this. This is a DITA document and I know that nesting tables is very bad style. However it is a requirement and after all DITA does support it.In unstructured documents we used anchored Frames in table cells. The approach for structured documents seems similar:"Select a graphic element for empty anchored frames in the Element Catalog, and click New Frame"I wonder how I can accomplish this. In the EDD I would have to set up an element (perhaps a dedicated paragraph class) to insert an anchored Frame in which then the table is inserted.Has anybody succeeded in using nested tables in structured documents with Framemaker?Robert
We recently upgraded from Tech Comm Suite 3.5 to 4.0 (with FrameMaker 11), in a Windows 7 environment. We have had several instances--on different workstations with different people--of FrameMaker 11 crashing when people are trying to create a simple cross-reference.In a typical situation, the person has successfully created one or two cross-references, and then FrameMaker completely and abruptly shuts down the next time the person tries to create one.FrameMaker creates "recover" files when that happens.Has anyone else seen this behavior, and do you know how to prevent it?Thanks in advance!Tim
I'm getting some annoying odd behaviour with cross references in Frame 12.I have some tables, where the paragraph style in the cell is called "Cell Body" (nothing odd there).Quite a few of the cells only have one word in them, and that word is set to courier font with a character style (called "Code").Then, elsewhere in the document, I am referring to this text using cross references. I am referencing the paragraph style Cell Body, and the cross reference format applied is like this "<hyperlink><$paratext><Default ¶ Font>""hyperlink" is another character style that makes the text go green. So, the cross reference out to take the text from the cell (in Courier) and reproduce it, coloured green. However for about half of these cross references, it isn't picking up the Code character style in the source text, so the cross ref is just green, no green courier.Things are further bamboozled when I output to HTML Help.In the CHM file, the cross refs which appear to work OK (gre
FM11 / DITA 1.2What could cause a particular cross reference to consistently NOT work? I know that's vague. I'll try to give a more specific example:Let's say I have a collection of xrefs across several XML files in a DITA map. Some xrefs might even point to the same item (usually a <title> tag with an ID attribute). On output to a book with FM components, particular xrefs just will not work (they output as "unresolved"). I can fix it manually in the FM file, but I'd rather it work correctly in the first place, especially since I deal with translation in to several languages, and if I can't get an xref to just work, I have to fix it many, many times.I've tried deleting the xref and starting again; I've tried changing the ID attribute in case there was some kind of conflict...I still have trouble with that particular xref (and this happens with more than one xref). What else can I try?Again, I know this is vague. I'd be happy to elaborate on relevant points. I just don't currently
Hi,This may be more of a technical writing question, but I will be writing a number of different types of documents, including business processes, codes of practice, manuals, standards and work instructions.I need to decide which metadata to capture, but I am new to metadata, and not entirely sure what I should be capturing. Can anyone give me advice on typical markers that are used in technical documentation (other than the default ones)? Thanks
It used to be that Acrobat, Distiller, and the PDF printer instance needed some tweaking when first installed, because Adobe's default settings were suboptimal. Now I have TCS 5 (FM12 and Acrobat 11 Pro), what settings do I need to adjust in:AcrobatDistillerPDF printer? For example, I plan to embed and subset fonts, and not use font substitution, download TrueType Fonts as Softfont, and download as Native TrueType, and ask to replace existing PDF file (these last three apparently must be set in the printer instance as well as Acrobat settings).... Does print quality 1200dpi work well, for example (in the past, it has had issues)? Thanks,Sean
Hi guys,I have already started a chat about this but I kinda got kicked out.The essence is that I need to download FrameMaker 11 to re-sintall it on a PC.The problems is that I couldn't find a download anywhere for a FrameMaker version older than version 12.So I'd really appreciate your help, guys.Best,TimP.SHere's the chat transcript from yesterday, btw:info: You are now chatting with Mayank. I have been using FrameMaker 6 ----> 9 for 15 years.... Ever since I started I have had a problem importing graphics. Basically I will try to import an image by copying from another source and pasting into my FM document. Usually it is by taking a screenshot, or just right-clicking on an image from another source, and selecting "copy." Then when I paste it in, it does paste in but it is a lower resolution than the source. Sometimes it is larger (exploded) than the source and I can resize it to look OK but it never ends up looking as good as the original source. I can take the exact same image and paste it into a simple graphics program, like Windows Paint, and it looks perfect, exactly like the original source. but when I paste it into FM, it is pixelated, blurry, the wrong size (usually too large), etc... I work on technical documents and it is important that our graphics are clear and easy to read, so this is a real
Hi,I'm trying to create some special elements with DITA domain specialization in Adobe FrameMaker 10. I tried first with "codetable". It's derived from "simpletable", and can be inserted directly after "cmd" in task topics. I followed instructions in http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/10.0/DITA/framemaker_10_dita_integration.pdf. Everything goes well with the specialization. After the EDD, r/w rule, and template files are created, I modified elements "step" and "substep" in EDD to the following and import the EDD to the template:General rule:(note | hazardstatement)*, cmd, (codetable | choices | choicetable | info | itemgroup | stepxmp | substeps | tutorialinfo)*, (stepresult)? Then I create a new task (with structured app properly set), insert step, cmd, codetable. Everything is fine until I save the file. It prompts:It seems that my changes are not adopted by the content model. Anything I was missing during the process. Could anyone please help? Thanks!Regards,Rebecca Lai[Moved to
Hello,I have a huge book of over half a thousand pages created in FrameMaker 7.2. Recently we upgraded to FrameMaker 12. I updated the book and wanted to create responsive HTML5 help. But I get an error message that says: "FrameMaker book files could not be found."I was able to create HTML5 output of other smaller books. But not from this one. Also I can create html5 output of each chapter individually, but not of entire book. Please help who knows what I can do to have a necessary output. Thanks!
When I try to "Save as book" to PDF, I get a font error that prevents the file opening for printing. When I view the file, I get:The "Myriad Pro Light" Font is not available. "MyriadPro-Regular" will be used in this session. The print error does not specify which font, but I assume it is the one mentioned in the first line above. The font is in the Windows font directory, but FM is not seeing it. How do I fix this?Unstructered FM12, Win8.1, HP printers (no choice about that)
Getting an error while generating TOC in structured framemaker 11
Hi all,We have a requirement for some custom table ruling, and, as we all know, this is not supported natively by structured Frame. We don't need to enforce it via the EDD, but just need to be able to apply it and have it persist in the XML somewhere. So I read a useful post here (Re: Control table row or cell formatting via EDD context rules?) where Lynne P. provided info on table properties now supported in Frame 11 and 12, and we have tried to implement this. We are working in Frame 11 using a modified Docbook XML DTD, and we work only in XML, i.e. we never same the documents as Frame binaries. Here's what we did:1. In our DTD, we added these attributes based on the list of custom ruling properties from the Frame 12 Dev Ref Guide: use-bottom-rule-override CDATA #IMPLIED &
Hi All,I'm running FM12.0.2.389 on Win7-SP1 (64-bit) laptop with i7 & 16GB RAM.I reported this issue as a bug in the Adobe bug base, but they weren't able to reproduce the bug with the files I sent. This leads me to believe that perhaps the conflict is a result of something gone wonky or conflicting in my system. Here's what's happening:Using "Set as per Expression" triggers FM crash upon next File>Save, displays error about imported graphic, and results in loss of data that was tagged with conditions set to exclude via "NOT" in the Boolean build expression.Steps to Reproduce Using My Files (zipped):1. Open Ch1_Introduction-4FC.fm.2. Create a build expression named 3DpartnerKitConditions using this definition:not "LIVEonly" and not "InstallOnly" and not ( "Comment" or "Deleted" or "Future" or "international" or "PostInstall" or "Question" or "SDinstallOnly" )3. File > Save.4. Apply the build expression.5. File > Save...(crash)Result: All data tagged with conditions exclude
Hi All,I'm running FM12.0.2.389 on Win7-SP1 (64-bit) laptop with i7 & 16GB RAM.As Arnis had mentioned on a post about using condition tags with tables, applying the condition tag to the insertion point character hides the whole table when you hide that tag. This is the way I've always witnessed condition tags applied to the text inset working, too. However, that's not what I'm seeing now, but I don't know if what I'm seeing is "as designed' typical behavior, or a new change since FM9 (I jumped from FM9 to FM12), or if this is a problem peculiar to my FM installation. Here's the scenario: I have FM files that are used as text insets in several documents ("inset FMs" for clarity). The entire library of FM files has deployed several condition tags and variables to further accommodate delineations between nearly identical products, US/international English, and shorter output documents from the same set of source files. For sake of discussion, I'll use an example that involves 4 conditi
In FM 12, I have a book composed of one front-matter file and 9 chapter files. The chapters (1-9) auto-numbered without any problems and pagination is correct. I want to add section and subsection numbers. Within each file I added autonumber format tags to the headers used specifically for section and subsection titles on the first chapter page and autonumber format tags within the body of the chapters. The autonumber tags are –<$chapnum>.<$sectionnum>\t<$chapnum>.<$sectionnum>.<$subsectionnum>\tfor paragraph tags Heading 2 and Heading 3, respectfully. When I select numbering in the book file window and click on either the Section and Sub-section tab, the windows are grayed out. I know I'm missing something obvious. I've gone through help files, manuals and tutorials for hours and can't find what I need. Any advice about where I can look to sort this out?Thank you.
We are using unstructured FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform. We create training guides that can be published to PDF as either "Instructor" or "Participant" guides. The content for the Instructor Guide is conditionalized, so we can hide it when we publish the Participant Guide. The color we have selected for the conditionalized text is dark gray, so the guide can be printed on a B&W printer and still do a fair job of distinguishing between instructor content and participant content. When we block a section of text to conditionalize it for the Instructor Guide, and it includes a table, FrameMaker puts gigantic gray borderlines within the cells of the table.Does anyone know of a way to remove those thick gray borderlines for the conditionalized table, but retain the gray conditionalization for the text? (We want the entire table to "hide" when we publish the Participant Guide, but we do not want the thick gray borderlines in the table for the Instructor Guide.)Thank you in a
I have just found the Script Library panel in FM 10. (Always used InDesign before.)I'm up to replace a text string and two master pages in 100+ documents. Tried to google for some nice solutions to make this automatically but cannot find any scripts/macros to FM at all.Do you have som tip where to find such script/macro?
Hi all,I'm new in FDK and try to compare two ranges to define which of them is the first one in the document. But I didn't find any function in FDK.Does anybody know ways to do it?

FM 12.0.2.389 in Windows 8 Pro (not 8.1). Only FM and Windows Explorer open. Is there a known issue with Save as RTF 1.6 in FrameMaker 12? I would like to be able to predict the crashes, because it killed me on a deadline yesterday.Often, when saving an unstructured six page FM as RTF 1.6, FrameMaker crashes (and closes). I get a message that FrameMaker has stopped working, and anything I select results in FrameMaker closing and when I reopen the FM I have to reset the file lock. And, other times, the RTF is created. And the crash or successful save has happened without any changes to the FM in question. I cannot identify any factor contributing to the crash, when the crash happens (so I cannot provoke or predict the crash), but when the crashing starts it persists for a while.
