FrameMaker

Adobe InDesign, and PageMaker before it, have/had a helpful feature allowing users to place view-only horizontal and vertical lines over a document. You simply clicked on the horizontal or vertical ruler on the side of the page and dragged, and the line would appear and move to wherever you stopped dragging it. These were very helpful for aligning objects and columns and i.e. locating the centerline of a page. I'm sorry -- I cannot remember what this feature is called ...Does Adobe FrameMaker 10 have any similar feature? (I could use it!) Thanks for any help you can share...

How can you add symbols to the SYmbols drop-down menu located on the toolbar? I frequently use symbols for electronic components and values and would like to add those symbols to the drop-down menu.

I recently upgraded from FM9 to FM12 running on Windows 7. When I open an FM9 doc in FM12 and save it as FM12, I don't see any of the previous varialbles in the Variables list. I can Find them when searching for Any Variable, but they are listed, so I can't edit them. Steve

I have to use the same content and should get displayed for the particular customer when I publish that particular customer. Hi everyone,Lately I've been thinking that it would come in handy to have a script that would allow me to select/highlight (using a mouse) a few words of text in an unstructured FM document, and then choose from a dropdown menu the kind of DITA doc (Task, Concept, or Reference) that I want to paste the text into. Upon making the selection, a new FM DITA page would be automatically generated with the copied text pasted in between its title tags. Is the kind of automation I'm looking for within the realm of possiblity using ExtendScript? It seems like I might be able to cobble together some scripts I've found to take care of the copying & pasting and the dropdown menu, but I have yet to figure out how to write a script that will create and open a new document in FrameMaker. Any thoughts?

I have Technical Suite 3.5 installed and several RoboHelp projects linked to FrameMaker books.The Frame books were created in FrameMaker 10. I then upgraded to Technical Suite 3.5, then later upgraded my FrameMaker to 11.All was well, RoboHelp continued to update from the Frame book files.Then last week my hard disk crashed. IT provided a new disk, installed the Technical Suite and FrameMaker 11, but now when I open the RoboHelp projects and try to update them, RoboHelp displays an error message that says "Adobe FrameMaker 10 is not installed. No FrameMaker documents can be updated."When I try to relink the project to FrameMaker (File | Link), I get a similar message:  "This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker 10. Install FrameMaker 10 and try again."How can I get RoboHelp to recognize my FrameMaker 11 installation, which it used to do prior to the crash and reinstallation?Thanks.Jerry

Paragraph Designer only has reference frame placement options for Above or Below the paragraph. I wish there was an option for "Frame Beside Pgf."Has anyone found a solution to mimic this function (with only one or two clicks)?

Hello,My Paragraph Designer settings are for some reason not being consistent for each included para tag in the Table of Contents. The apppearance of each one is set to :  <$paratext>[tab]<$chapnum>-<$pagenum>with the tabs set to 6.5" R (w/ leader dots).I've just added another para tag. When I try to set the exact same tab for this one as all the others, I get the message that "The tab position is too far to the right."How could the same tab work fine for the other tags, and be too far to the right for this one? All settings for this tag are identical to the others.

whenever we try to open a file in adobe framemaker 10 this is the error its poping out, kindly get me a solution for this. The "Times" Font Family is not available. "Times New Roman" will be used in this session. The "Helvetica Bold Oblique" Font is not avaialbe. "Arial Bold Italic" will be used in this session. The "Helvetica Bold" Font is not available. "Arial Bold" will be used in this session. The "Times-Italic" Font is not available. "Times New Roman Italic" will be used in this session. The "Helvetica" Font is not avaialble. I am using Frame 11. I have a registered script that looks for event notification Constants.FA_Note_PostOpenXML. When this event fires, the script is supposed to examine the root element (so I only edit appropriate XML files), then make some edits to the file. Specifically, I want to be able to delete empty pages, remove room for side heads, and fix table formatting (such as left indent, which I can't directly access, apparently, in the EDD or R/W rules). FM 11 checked into Vasont and then turned into a PDF via the DITA OTWe are using a combination of conversion tables and a few scripts to convert our legacy documentation to DITA. In some books we have a significant number of hypertext links. Can a document within FM12 be saved in a format for the usage with FM11 without losing any data?

I'm creating Webhelp files directly from Framemaker 12 - with no Robohelp interaction, just using the Publish option. (We do have TCS 5 Trial version, but I'm experimenting with just the FM 12 output.)I want to create some drop-down captions and body text, and am applying these styles to text using Special>Publish Options>Dynamic HTML effects>Drop Down Caption and Drop Down Body.This works fine when it's simply a single line for the caption, and a basic, single paragraph for the DDB. But if I apply the DDB style to a chunk of text including, for example, a Note style, numbered list styles and bullets, the formatting in these styles is lost, and cross references cease to work.Is this just something I have to live with (and use only single paragraphs in plain Body text for the drop down text)? Or is there a workaround that anyone knows of?Many thanks in advanceLaura

I can open FrameMaker 10 through the EXE.I can open FrameMaker 10 through a .book file.I can open a .book file from FrameMaker 10.I cannot open FrameMaker 10 through a .fm file.I cannot open a .fm file from Framemaker 10.I've tried multiple .fm files, so this isn't isolated to s sngle corrupted file.I was using FrameMaker 10 yesterday, but it doesn't work today.I updated Flash this morning, but have not installed any other programs.

Hello,The Fm 10 Scripting Guide seems to say that the flags parameter for GetText() is a bitmask, and I should OR constants to get different kinds of text items and so forth. Is this really true or is there some simpler way to tell GetText() what text items I need? Or do I need to brush up my rusty bitwise OR skills? Or did the tech writer just cut and paste form the FDK Reference?Thanks

Even if a reader who doesn't know better might be left with the impression that FM doesn't do topic-cased authoring, it was interesting to see an article offering clear figures and talking about ROI: unstructured Frame already saves you time and money. I am trying to update a book, and everytime I get a serious internal error. We recently updated the book with no issues. I have tried deleting the generated files (lists of paragraphs and standard indexes) and reinserting them, but still get the error. Any ideas??

In Frame 10, is it possible to globally rip and replace all styles, variables, and conditions in a file? I found that by importing formats, I bring in new formats, but I don't remove the old ones.

I am working on FM 11 and need to add a 11" x 17" graphic in the middle of my chapter (on 8 1/2" x 11" portrait). This large graphic will be on a foldout page. What's the best way to do it? Thanks.

I use distiller 9 at work to convert books, made with Framemaker 11, to a pdf. The problem is that some pages are an 11x17 fold out. We go back and replace these manually in the final pdf. Is there a way that distiller can handle these files during the convert to pdf process? We are thinking of adding more pages this way, and this would be a huge time saver. Our software- Framemaker 11, Acrobat 9 Pro, Acrobat Distiller 9, PS and AI CS5.

My manager recently purchased a subscription version of FrameMaker 12. I downloaded the files to my local computer and clicked the Set-up application file so that I could begin the installation process. A Welcome dialog displays with two options: Install and Try (for tral version). Since this is not a trial version, I selected the "Install" option. The problem with this is that after I click Accept for the Adobe Software License Agreement, the next panel asks for a serial number. My manager said he was not given a serial number for the subscription copy. So how do I proceed to install FrameMaker? Have I gone about the installation process incorrectly? I'll need help with this one since I definitely need to download FrameMaker soon to work on my current project. Please advise. Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

FrameMaker 10 (v. 10.0.2.419), Window 7.When copying text from Word into FrameMaker, I would like "TEXT" to be the first item in the dialog box when using Paste Special.We have edited the ClipboardFormatsPriorities in the maker.ini file by moving TEXT from the end to the beginning of the line:ClipboardFormatsPriorities=TEXT, FILE, MIFW, MIF, RTF, OLE 2, META, EMF,  DIB, BMP, UNICODE TEXTSo far, the changes have not taken affect.Can this be done?ThanksDebbie
