My installation of Premiere Pro (13.1.2/macOS) started doing an odd thing a few months ago (possibly after a recent Adobe update, though it persisted through a macOS update from Sierra to High Sierra, as high as we can go because of our video server drivers). I can't hear audio playback through any connected audio device when I open or create any project. The only fix I can find is to delete both the preferences and plug-in caches when I launch the program (holding down the Shift and Option keys on the Mac). I have to do this EACH TIME I open a project. As you can see below, in one example I have Headphones selected as the Mac's output device in the OS and Built-in output selected in Premiere (interestingly, Headphones do not appear as an option). When I play back anything (including bars and tone), I can see the audio display in the VU meters in Premiere, but can hear nothing. The same is true for every other output source I have available. As you can see, audio output is mapped correctly. Rebooting the computer doesn't help. Here is the only process I've found to get audio to work: Open a project and select an audio output device VU meters confirm that audio is present, but no audio coming through the selected audio output device Quit Adobe Premiere Hold down Shift and Option during the launch Holding down either by itself doesn't fix anything Open any project Select the desired audio output device in Audio Hardware Preferences Play back any clip in any project and the audio plays back in Premiere as desired When I quit and restart Premiere, I'll again lose audio playback. This is really frustrating because I can no longer save any Preferences in the program. Please, can anybody help???
