Are there any known issues publishing a course in Captivate 8 (either in SWF or HTML) and launching and viewing the content in IE8?

I would publish for both (Flash/HTML5). I have a client who still is using an old browser on all their client machines. This way they will get the HTML5 once they upgrade to a higher end browser but in the meantime will see the flash content.

Ummmm...no that's not quite how it works.

When you publish to both SWF and HTML5 Captivate creates both outputs but has a 'sniffer' file in between called multiscreen.html that tries to detect whether or not the content is being viewed on a mobile device or a desktop.  If it detects a mobile browser then it redirects to the HTML5 content, otherwise it redirects to the HTM/SWF version of the same content.

So, this DOES NOT mean that your desktop users with HTML5-ready browsers will automatically get the HTML5 version.  The sniffer script is not detecting for HTML5 vs SWF browsers per se.  It's looking for certain types of browsers to detect mobile devices vs desktop systems.

Would it be better to say that IE8 is not fully HTML5 compliant, therefore a suggestion would be to publish for both HTML5 and SWF to ensure compatibility with the most situations i.e. SWF for desktop users who may be using a pre HTML5 browser like IE8, or HTML5 for those with a browser that supports it such as the mobile version of Chrome and so on.

Did IE8 support HTML5?  Not very well if my memory is correct.

Not sure- we are having a compatibility issue with another authoring tool we use- and our IT staff have suggested using IE8 as the default for eLearning.....

IE8 is not HTML5 compliant.  Don't use it for HTML5 elearning unless you have something against your IT department and you WANT them to be deluged with unhappy customers.
