Fonts changing in files when opened in Illustrator 29.5.1

I've experienced this twice now, both times in the last month. I design beer labels and I'll often open an older label and use it as the template for a new one. When I open the older file (an .AI file), it will load, and most of the live text will have switched to a different font arbitrarily. Some fonts switch to OTHER typefaces that exist in the same document, others switch to different weights of the same font, and still others switch to defaults like times and myriad.  Some of the switched fonts are stored locally, and others are served via Adobe Fonts. The file does this consistently even after I've restarted illustrator and restarted my computer.

I've attached a screenshot of one of the files with its original fonts (from an outlined version for print), as well as a shot with the changed fonts.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't know how to get layers, I don't know what brushes, I don't have a brain, I don't know what to do.

Hello @stunning_giftb380

I’m sorry to hear you’re having similar trouble with Illustrator. Could you try updating to the latest Illustrator release (https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-manually.html) and see if that resolves the problem? If not, kindly confirm whether this happens with all files/fonts. If not, share a sample file, the installed OS/Illustrator version, and a brief screen recording of the problem so we can check this with the team.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

here’s a screen capture of what happened. I opened 2 nearly identical files at the same time - the only difference between the 2 is the flavor name and colors. without sharing any confidential information, here’s an example of what happened. you’ve seen a Nutrition Facts panel before… this is not what it’s supposed to look like. Every single font has changed. It happens randomly (only happened to 1 of the 2 files I opened today), and sporadically, maybe once a month. I love illustrator, it is my number 1 tool of choice. but this is extremely frustrating. if i didn’t know any better, I would say this is a cruel bug that a disgruntled employee buried in code somewhere……

Has there been any update on this?  I’m on version 30.3 and the fonts have all changed case and size.

I understand that you are just following a directive from Adobe however as you are payed for your time Adobe's customers also need to make a living. Adobe MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for insuring that this font substitution issue is fixed! It is not up to your customers to waste there time and money testing the your software, it is not 1985. Just go to your local Apple store buy 10 macs configure them in various ways and test them yourself. Then release the update notifying your paying customers that it has been fixed!!

The question remains. Hvae you confidently identified the issue that was causing it in the first place? And therefore been able to make the necessary code changes so it doesn't happen again. I appreciate that the illustartor code is probably an absolute behemoth nightmare of bodges, bolt ons and work arounds as it's never been rewritten from the ground up, but only 'developed'. But despite that I'm hoping your coders can give some level of confidence that a bug with such a core functionality has been identifies and sorted. Saying attempted is hardly confidence inspiring! If you do font critical work for print your latest version is still to be avoided until you can give us some assurance it's resolved.

Anubhav M .............

So, to paraphrase what you said:  “ We called up the best of our Adobe tech coder cavalry and they ATTEMPTED to fix the random font substitution bug in Adobe Illustrator that has been going on for several months, costing Adobe customers thousands of dollars in lost time and possibly costing them clients".

To paraphrase a quote from Pulp Fiction, this is what we need to hear:  “You ain’t got no problem folks.  We are on the mofo.  Install Adobe Illustrator 30.0, chill out, and get back to work without any fear of the devastating random font substitution bug".

I just installed Illustrator 30.0 and tried opening a bunch of my older files, including the original culprit from the screenshots, and so far they are all rendering fonts correctly.

Good to know thanks. Still crickets from Adobe! You would think with all the money and support the industry has given them they would at least give us notification that they have addressed this. They want to take no responsibility and let us take a punt with a sample of 1 from a chat. Hope it continues to work for you.

Cheers M

strange that 29.0.1 also has this problem...
Should or should I not upgrade to 30.0?

That's pretty alarming as I was under the impresion that the highest version number without the bug was 29.4 which I'm currently using and have no plans to upgrade until Adobe can confidently say they've identified the source of the problem and solved it. I haven't noticed any fornt issues with version 29.4. to date.

Come on Adobe have you really sorted this? Can you confidently say you've idientifed the problem and sorted it.
