Having trouble saving new files in Ai CS3 on my new Mac Os Sierra

I had to purchase a new Mac two weeks ago. My old iMac was ten years old and was having issues. The new Mac is a macOS Sierra version 10.2.5. My concern was the software which was Adobe Suite CS3 and its compatibility. I was assured that it would work fine and I had to have it reinstalled onto the new computer from the original discs. It works great as far as my being able to open the old files from my previous computer. I can make revisions, save the files without any problems. My main problem now is that while I can open the software - whether inDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator - I can work in them but when I go to save the files, it closes and I lose the work. I am not sure as to why I am not allowed to save any work and was wondering if anyone has experienced this and if anyone has any idea as to how to solve this problem.

    CS3 is an very old application and Sierra 10.12.5 is the latest version, so there are compatibility issues are possible as CS versions are not tested on new operating systems.So it might or might not work.

    As you said you were able to install and work on it and its giving issues while saving files.

    Please try following steps.

    1) Boot system to safe boot with same account and check how it works, if it works fine close all third party running services. For details click here Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

    2) Log in to root account  For details check here How to enable the root user on your Mac - Apple Support

    Check how application works there, If it works fine

    • Go to Location ~/Library/Preferences
    • right click preferences folder and click get info
    • Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
    • Change permissions to read and write.
    • Click the Action pop-up menu , then choose “Apply to enclosed items.”
    • If you do not see your account there click on plus symbol on bottom left corner and add account and follow same steps

    Follow same steps for

    ~/Library/Caches

    ~/Library/Application support

    /Library/Preferences

    /Library/Caches

    /Library/Application support

    Note: If you are on office system ,these (/Library/Application support and/Library/Preferences) folders may or may not allow you to add user , that is completely fine.

    Then reboot the system back to normal account and check performance.

    Exactly where are you trying to save?

    Do you change to somewhere outside the Documents folder?

    Maybe try saving without changing the location.

    You had terrible advice from someone. Mac OS changes a lot and upgrading Mac OS (which of course you have to do with a new Mac) should also include budgeting for ALL NEW software. Anything that works it has a free fix is a bonus.

    Here are the System Requirements for Illustrator CS 3:

    Mac OS

    • PowerPC G4 or G5 or multicore Intel processor
    • Mac OS X v10.4.810.5 (Leopard)
    • 512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended)
    • 2.5 GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)
    • 1024 x 768 monitor resolution with 16-bit graphics adapter
    • DVD-ROM drive
    • QuickTime 7 software required for multimedia features
    • Internet or phone connection required for product activation
    • Broadband Internet connection required for Adobe Stock Photos* and other services

    * Online services, including, but not limited to, Adobe Stock Photos and Adobe Connect, may not be available in all countries, languages, and currencies.     I see nothing about Sierra in these specs. Whoever told you your CS3 applications would work fine, gave you very bad advice. If it was a salesperson at an Apple store, make sure to complain to the manager. Maybe they'll pay for your CC subscription.

    Next time check the  System requirements | Adobe Illustrator.
