how to properly import time lapse from Iphone into After Effects

Community-Einsteiger ,
Feb 21, 2021 Feb 21, 2021
Hello everyone!
Can someone tell me how to fix it or get around it) I load Timelapse(from Iphone) into After Effect(cmd+I,  0:00:14:24 // 29,976fps // .mov), when I press the spacebar AE plays frames incorrectly. As if overwhelming between frames. in front and back And so on throughout the time-lapse. I found a solution to open and save in another program and then open it in AE. I understand that this is not serious) and I can't figure out how to properly export this to AE so that it plays as it should (

Thank you for providing the original movie file.

Yes, this is a result of After Effects not decompressing the file correctly.  Most likely it's something to do with the GOP structure not being arranged correctly upon decompression.  And yes, this could be reported as a bug.

Convert "IMG_5591.mov" to Apple ProRes in the Finder and then import that to After Effects.  The ProRes version will take up much more disk space, but it will play as expected in AE.

This sounds like an unexpected issue with decompression.  Try transcoding the movie from the iPhone to Apple ProRes422 LT in Adobe Media Encoder prior to importing it into After Effects.  You can also transcode it to ProRes in the Finder if AME has the same issue that AE is having.

Hello 1st problem my English 2nd the problem is that AE plays the timeslaps in a strange way, as if it jumps a couple of frames in ahead-forward and plays then jumps back. It plays a couple of frames normally-correct and again jumps in front and repeats. I read a couple of posts, the guy had a similar problem, but he loaded the sequence of frames into AE and the problem was in the names of the frames. Example 1, 2, 3, 11, 4, 22, it was necessary to put zero 001, 002, 003, 011, 004, 022. But why I have this issues... I dont understand this

Since you have a single movie file rather than an image sequence, padding the sequence number (that is, using 00001, 00002, 00003, etc. instead of 1, 2, 3) does not apply to your issue; however, if you ever switch to image sequences, including padded numbering ensures that After Effects will sort the images in the correct order.

Yeah, this is one file, the iPhone exports a time-lapse with the parameters 0:00:14:24 // 29.976fps // .mov

Is this the original clip or is it exported from After Effects?

It holds the first three frames, then seems to be correct very, very briefly, and then seems to temporally reverse every other frame.  So, instead of frames 030, 031, 032, 033, 034, 035, 036, 037, 038 you're getting 030, 032, 031, 034, 033, 036, 035, 038, 037.

Does IMG_5592_1.mp4 play in the correct frame order in something other than an Adobe application?  Like QuickTime Player or VLC Player?

If it plays as expected elsewhere, you could export the frames of the video file as an image sequence (you'll need an application that plays it as expected and can export image sequences) and then import the resulting image sequence into After Effects.

If it does not play as expected elsewhere, you probably need to export an image sequence so that you can manually correct the order in something like Premiere Pro where you can "shuffle" source clips (or in this case, the source still images), and then export a file that plays the images in the correct order.  This isn't ideal but will get you back on track.

Also, is IMG_5592_1.mp4 timelapse?  From the few frames that do play in the correct order at the head, it seems to be real-time.

Wow thanks U for this soulful answer))
No, this is not the original clip. This I dragged onto the composition icon and created a composition with the parameters of the original time-lapse video. Then I just exported it to mp4 to show that I see a time-lapse in the AE project))

Yes, I tried to explain it)) that something happens with the sequence of frames when the AE plays. I don’t understand why?) .... I’m importing a whole .mov file (

Tried importing original file to QuickTime everything ok and and tried it in another program, it was ok, but with other parameters (timeline: 29.97fps, origin file: 29.976fps)

It's sad if you have to use other programs for the correct import of the time-lapse from the iPhone into the AE ((...... Ehhh, I really wanted to just export from the phone and already work with it))

add original time-lapse)

Timelapse on the iPhone is set to playback at the default frame rate. If you want to slow it down or speed it up you change the frame rate interpolation by selecting the footage in the Project Panel and changing it from 29.976 (or whatever it is) to 15 to make it playback slower or 60 to make it playback faster.

If AE is interpreting the footage as a variable frame rate there may be a problem, but all of the timelapse I import from my iPhone is behaving exactly as I expect it to.

What exactly is going on in your playback. All of the movement should be sped up. If you choose slow motion on an iPhone it starts at normal speed then transitions to slow motion, then returns to normal speed. I don't recall time-lapse doing that.

It would really help us help you if we had a better description of what is going on. I'm not sure if I understand what overwhelming frames in the front and back mean.

Hello Rick Gerard)
Thank you for such a detailed answer!

"I import from my iPhone is behaving exactly as I expect it to" - Yes, I expected a time-lapse play that I saw on the phone screen) But I don’t know why AE plays the frames with the wrong consistency as it should (

Your movie does not tell me anything about what is going on in After Effects. I need to see the properties of the footage and the properties of the comp. I have done a lot of time lapse and never had any problems.

Are you importing the footage and then creating a composition from the imported footage?

Recently I wanted to practice more time-lapse shooting))

I understand what you mean, through the video I wanted to show what I see when I try to play a time-lapse in Project AE)

I import the time-lapse .mov file into the AE project and then create a composition with the same parameters as the original file (drag the .mov file onto the "new composition" icon)

add screenshots and original file)

Warren Heaton Who are You?!................ Your solution to the question is incredible and so elegant))
I didn't know about such a trick how to simply recode a video))))) Ahahaa it's so simple! Incredibly grateful to you;))
You are Hero!!! I'm so happy))

The problem was that the AE could not correctly recognize and accept the original file?

You can also just drag a video clip into the Adobe Media Encoder and transcode it to any of the existing presets. That is the technique I use most often and it works on Windows or Mac.

Media Encoder would usually be a great choice, but it has the same problem with the source file as After Effects.

I even went back to CC 2019.  Those versions of AE and AME got the frame order correct, but some frames showed as green.

So, the conversion needs to happen outside of Adobe video.

Vlad:

Is this happening with all of your timelapse clips or just with "IMG_5591.mov"?

AKTUELL

When I read your last answer, I was remembered

I used standard software in my phone to cut off the beginning of the time-lapse a little. Now I filmed two time lapses.

One also cut off the beginning (like the problematic one) and loaded these two clips into AE. He also created a composition with the same parameters as the clip, AE plays them as expected without any problems)

Interestingly, the file that was cut off in the phone has an extension of .mov and the file is normal without trimming .MOV))
