Audition crashes everytime I try to use my second monitor for video

For some reason ever since the last 2 updates to Audition, everytime I go to use my second screen Audition crashes.

My workflow prior to this bug was to have my timeline on my right hand screen, and the video on the left hand screen. Everytime I try to place the video on my left screen the app freezes up and crashes. I've tried turning off hardware acceleration, turning on/off full screen, different resolutions, etc. I've even completley uninstalled and re-installed the software and I'm still having this issue. This is making it impossible for me to edit audio for video content as I cannot see the video unless I leave it as a tiny box on a single monitor.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

First thing we'd want to know is whether this is on a Mac or a PC...

I know it's obvious and I'll probably get moaned at for mentioning it, but have you tried checking to see if there are any updates for your video driver?

Yup so I've tried both the latest drivers for both studio and game driver on my Nvidia EVGA 1080Ti SC2. This problem has been present for a few driver interations as it's been happening for me since the last 2 Adobe updates.

Well, since you said that it produces a crash, you probably ought to do what it says here: Audition crashed - now what? Yes, send the log files to audbugs@adobe.com but it might well be worth posting it here, just in case it's something obvious...

Hi Steve,

I've got the log files, but how do I upload them here?

Just found it 🙂 Okay so it looks like it might be a GPU error? It's saying support not enabled for my Nvidia 1080Ti.

I thought that this was one of the things that Hardware Acceleration made a difference to, but maybe not. Did you submit this to audbugs@adobe.com yet? If you haven't, I think it would be a good idea!

Same here but unfortunatley it didn't make any differnce. I've emailed the crash report to Adobe so hopefully will hear something soon.

Did you email it to audbugs@adobe.com as Steve suggested earlier?  I don't see anything in the inbox, and if it was just submitted as a crash report, those may not get responded to unless we're aware of them through another means.  To call or chat with a technical support rep, details are at https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

My first suggestion would be to try launching with clean preferences, as this sounds like it might be workspace related.  To do that, open Windows file explorer and in the location bar, go to:   %APPADATA%\Adobe\Audition\   Then rename the "13.0" directory to "13.0.backup" and launch Audition, trying the second monitor.

If that doesn't work, you can delete the new "13.0" directory that gets made and rename the backup directory back to 13.0 so you don't lose any presets or shortcuts.  In that case, my second suggestion would be to see if the problem is limited to the video panel or if other panels cause the same issue, by moving any other panel to the second monitor.

One additional question - are you physically dragging the video panel to the second monitor, or using the "Mirror Full Screen" command?

Hi Durin,

Thanks for your response. That's correct I had sent through a summarised email with what was listed in this thread including the crash report. In regards to the link for the technical support rep, it takes me to a page that only has information topics on changing plan, cancelling subscription or installing the software, there's no technical help topic I can find.

In reference to the launching with clean preferences I had already tried this based on some advice I found online, but it unfortunately did not work. I tried it again with your suggestion just to make sure but it's having the same issue.

In regards to the second suggestion I have tried both methods. So currently, when I go to 'preferences - video - enable full screen' Audition freezes and crashes. This is also the same doing it through the video tab sub menu as you showed above. Then I noticed that the video would play with no problem if I left it in the small box in the bottom left hand corner, so I tried to pull that window out and place it on my secondary monitor. This method sometimes works, but the moment I close the program and re-open the same project, it will not open up and crashes/freezes on boot up. I have to then start a new project, and bring that window back into the small corner on the 1st monitor to re-open the project.

One thing I did notice, but am unsure if this may be related to the problem, is that my second screen shows a 59hz refresh rate (in the monitor selection box under mirroring) instead of the normal 60hz (it used to be 60hz). I have checked both ny nvidia software and windows display options and both show the monitor is at 60hz.

I just looked through the audbugs@adobe.com account and don't see an email from you.  It's possible, if there were a ZIP or another file type, that it might have been flagged as spam and never got delivered.  Any chance to reach out to that email address again and I'll make sure we respond directly so we can get those reports and figure out what's going on.

Thanks

Hi, corehaza.  I got your PM and original email.  My last email response was sent June 17 with instructions to capture a Windows "Crash dump" file, but have never heard back.  The crash dump file captures the memory pattern of an application that's locked up or crashing, and can be analyzed by engineers to better know what's going on.

I'm happy to re-send the email and continue troubleshooting if you did not receive it.  ACtually, here's the content of the message:

Thanks for getting in touch here and for the log file.  Unfortunately, it’s a little bit more difficult to get the actual crash log on Windows than it is on Mac, so when you have a few minutes to do the following, it will help pinpoint what exactly is going on:

  1. When Audition crashes in this way, immediately press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard and click on Task Manager
  2. Locate the Adobe Audition CC.exe application in the Processes tab and right-click on it.
  3. Choose “Create Dump”

This will write to a file, which will probably be a few hundred megabytes, capturing the state of the application, all the internal and OS error messages, and even letting us know which lines of program code were active at the time of the crash.  Send this file over to me via Dropbox, Google Drive, Creative Cloud Files, or whatever service you prefer and I’ll ask one of the engineers to take a look at it in a debugger.

Hi Durin,

Thank you so much for your response! I've checked the email through and through in both inbox and spam, but hadn't received anything. Can I confirm it was being sent to [email redacted now that Durin has seen it - Mod]

I've created the audition dump file and will send it through now using wetransfer.

Email just seems more and more unreliable these days!  That said, I did get the wetransfer email, and am grabbing the dump file now.  I'll ask the team to analyze it and will follow up asap.  Thanks for capturing that.

The first suspicious thing from the memory dump is some calls to Nahimic OSD which intercepts some video calls to process through Direct3D for the on-screen display.  Any chance you can close or disable Nahimic then try this again to see if it makes a difference?

Hi Durin,

Sorry for the late reply on my end, I hadn't received anything through email (I think there might be a problem on the email side) so thought I'd double check here and just saw your post! I uninstalled Nahimic (a sound software that came with my motherboard) and Audition seems to be working well with the video. So far so good, hoping that was the fix needed. I'll let you know if anything else occurs, but a big thank you for your help! This has been driving me nuts forever! Thanks heaps once again.

Almost 3 months and no response from Adobe...I can't even find a way to speak to someone directly...my plan has now expired and I won't renew till I know this problem can be fixed.

I'm presuming that you left a means of contacting you in the submission? No promises, but I'll see what I can do.
