Edit existing font

New Here ,

Hi

I want to create a custom font for a client by editing an existing font.

Can I do anything in illustrator to the characters as I am used to the interface then replace the characters in a different software?

Are there any legal/copyright issues? Do I need to start from an open source font, or could I use any font I have a license for ?

Thanks for any input

You can't edit fonts in Illustrator. However, a font editor MIGHT export individual glyphs in a form you can edit in Illustrator, then put back.

There certainly could be licensing issues. Each font has a license. At the very least you can't in general give a font to a client if it is licensed, the client needs their own license - this is nothing to do with editing, just normal license rules. A font license MIGHT also forbid editing the font. You need to find and follow the license.

Open Source fonts may be the answer, but these two are licensed. You may have requirements about naming, acknowledging or passing on the license in an appropriate way.

So in all cases they are intellectual property and you need to start with a careful read of the license.
