Illustrator 28.6 prevents screensaver from kicking in

I have updated to 28.6 yesterday and, ever since, whenever Illustrator is running, the screensaver is not being allowed to follow the System Settings set in macOS Sonoma 14.5 (M3 Max).

How do I know it is Illustrator?

1. it persists through log out and macOS restart

2. through trial and error, I excluded all other apps and it is the only one doing this.

I do not recall this happening on 28.5, and I will likely uninstall this version and revert to the older one if this persists.

Thank you

Hi @Inélsòre

We're really sorry to hear about this issue. Could you please share a short video demonstrating the problem? Additionally, could you let us know how it behaves in Safe Mode?

Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Srishti

A short video of the screen saver not kicking in? That would be meaningless since it would just be a static screen.
I have the same problem. Just purchased an illustrator subscription yesterday and now my 3(!) 4K screens never shut off. Wasted a lot of electricity today since I was out most day and couldn't shut down my computer.

And you also can't just turn off the monitors? They should have a button for that.

Which system is it?

I have no issues with the screensaver on MacOS. But it's not Sonoma.

No on-off buttons for Apple Studio Display, which is what I have, and I'm currenrly experiencing the same issue as Inélsòre and Fredrik. Came home and realized my computer didn't just NOT start the screen saver, but also it never went to sleep, either.

Hi, I'm having the same issue as Inélsòre (and Fredrick, who also commented)

I'm running Illustrator 28.6 on a Macbook Pro (14-inch, 2023, M2 Max) running Sonoma 14.6.1. - If Illustrator is open, the screen saver / sleep mode will not engage. If Illustrator is SHUT DOWN AND CLOSED, then the screen saver and sleep mode engages.

I figured this out because the CEPHtmlEngine (for Illustrator), according to the Activity Monitor, is preventing the system from entering sleep mode.

Please let us know what we can do to solve the issue.

I am also having this issue since downloading the app on August 27, 2024.  I did not have any issues with the screensaver not activating before I installed the Creative Cloud Suite and Adobe Illustrator.  This creates a security concern as the computer does not automatically engage the screensaver after the specified amount of time prompting a password to get back in to the computer.  I spent 3 hours on Apple Support Chat and it was finally pinpointed to AI after multiple tests and even unintalling the app and downloading it again.  The chat agent at Adobe I spoke with moments ago argued with me telling me that it was an Apple software issue and I needed to contact Apple.  When I informed him that I spent three hours with them and everything we did to determine the issue, he said the backend support team has been notified and we just need to be patient and wait for the next AI update.

Me too. I have a Mac Studio with an M1 MAX processor running Sonoma 14.6.1. I noticed the issue a few weeks ago but finally worked out that it was Illustrator (28.6) a few days ago. I have to shut down AI whenever I need to walk away from my computer for more than 10 minutes. If I don't the screen will still be on hours later.

Same here; the screen saver doesn't start until I quit Illustrator 28.6 (iMac 27" 2017 Ventura 13.6.9).

MacOS Sonoma/M3 Max here, and I have had this issue on both Illustrator 28.6 and 28.7 (currently 28.71). It also didn't matter if I had BenQ displays, Thunderbolt Displays, or just the built-in Retina display.

The following happened:

  • I became more nervous losing my work since I suck hitting cmd-S.
  • The screen saver/power save mode worked fine.

You absolutely need to develop a habit of saving your work.

Not just cmd-S, but making backup versions of your work. Saving is absolutely crucial. When anything goes wrong while saving (power outage, battery down, crash) your file will be gone for good. You need to learn saving.

Also: turn on Time Machine.

Me too, same problem.  Literally just updated to both sonoma & the latest version of Illustrator.  Screensaver will not kick in unless I quit Illustrator.  Worried about screen burn now.

I have the same issue with version 28.7.1. Even if I turn the mac into sleep mode, the monitor sometimes turns on for some reason and then it will be on the login screen for I don't know how many hours. So now i forse close Illustrator every time. Its annoying, but its the only thing that works.

Yes, turning off file recovery probably works, because its a connection to the internet thing that probably prevents it, but I shouldnt be turning it off in the first place. The OP has reported the issue in july, its now september and its still not fixed.

Hello everyone,

I am sorry to hear about your experience and for the delayed response. I tried replicating this behavior on my end but could not do so. To better understand the problem, would it be possible for you to have a debug session with us? If yes, please send me your Adobe ID, Country & Timezone, phone number with country code, and preferred dates and times between Mon- and Fri over a private message.

To send a private message, click my profile picture and use the 'Send a message' button.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

The same thing happens to me. Whenever you work with the document for more than few minutes, Illustrator switches to Preventing Sleep mode. As we've already understood in this and similar discussions the cause of the problem is in AutoSaving. Yes, turning it off is a workaround but it shouldn't be a feature because it's a frustrating bug.
Photoshop works fine with Auto Saving turned on.
Premiere Pro works fine with Auto Saving turned on.
After Effects works fine with Auto Saving turned on.
We can proceed but I think it's clear that the problem lies within the Auto Saving code and it should be fixed, because it's annoying. And there is no reason to recommend turning off the feature we are paying for.

Hello @Jasinski,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I tried replicating this on my end but could not do so. Would you mind checking if Illustrator behaves this way when working with a particular file? If yes, kindly share the file here after uploading it to Google Drive/Dropbox/etc. so I can check it on my end.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Happens to me as well since the last update, but on Windows 11 🙂
Without Illustrator, screen goes to sleep.

This is an issue I have experienced as well. It has been happening for a while, but recently I updated my mac to Sequoia 15.0.1 and am still having the issue. When Adobe Illustrator is minimized, it will not go into Screen Saver or Sleep Mode.  I was able to go into activity monitor CPU tab and then sorted by Preventing Sleep and "CEPHtmlEngine" was there at the top. When I clicked the Info button it showed parent process as "Adobe Illustrator 2024." As soon as I closed out of  Illustrator, my computer went into screen saver mode.

I can confirm it on Windows as well!

As soon as I close Illustrator, it shutoff my displays, when I lock my computer.

Sidefact: Photoshop and InDesign are still running in the background with no issue. Only Illustrator (or more specific the CEPHtmlEngine.exe) is preventing a sleep state.

Hi @Anubhav M,

i did all what you said above 3 weeks ago. For a couple of days it was fixed and than it turns around and CEPHtmlEngine is preventing my mac to go to sleep or wakes it up. Illustrator is always open because i need it permanent so i wont close it a couple of times a day and reopen it. Thats annoying.

Currently i don't have the time to perform a clean reinstall of illustrator like @Anubhav M  suggested. But it seems, that the last (mayor?) update for illustrator fixed it for me.

Currently my AI is running on 29.1 on Win 10 and the display-sleep/shutdown works as expected.
