Illustrator 28 Retype selection not recognized, text recognition failed. Try another selection

Hello, 

I was so exited when I discoverd the Retype-tool, however, I can't get it to work at all. I select the image (or the outlined text if it's in vector), and I click enter and all I get is this: 

Super bummed, cause it would be so usefull if I could get it to work. Any suggestions?

I haven't tried giving Retype an image of connected script lettering or outlined vectors of it to process. When using the What the Font tool at MyFonts web site I've often had to do a bit of Photoshop work to disconnect script letters to get good results. These font finding tools also tend to need flat, level images of the letters in order to work correctly. It would be something else for a font finding tool to be able to identify letters in a photograph that are distorted by wrapping around something like can or just distorted via perspective.

I did some tests and so far the only pattern I see is that the issue apparently only occurs on Windows machines.

For example, on a HP Z240 Tower Workstation with Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19045), 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro M2000 the Retype palette in Illustrator is virtually dead. It doesn't recognise anything, no matter what source object you're selecting.

Same on my both pc from satr, but 1 is start working now, i don't change anything, just star working. on my main pc still the panel not working at al.

Something was changed on server side i think, becouse start working without any change or update for me.

I've logged a bug with the product team, and they are currently investigating the issue. They have requested a few details which would be really helpful in depicting the issue like:

• Exact version of OS, including build number
• System details (RAM, CPU, GPU generation, and make & model)
• Device make & model
• Is this an intermittent issue, or is it happening all the time?
• Would you mind sharing a sample image or file?
• A small screen recording demonstrating the issue.

Also, do you recall downloading the Retype module initially? After the download is complete, you'll receive a confirmation message indicating a successful installation.

Additionally, I would recommend you all upvote the UserVoice (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/47341301-retype...) and add your comment there.

Thank you all for providing the information. I've consulted with the product team, and they suggest trying to incorporate English OCR. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Click the "Start" button on your Windows system and navigate to "Settings."
2. Choose "Time & Language" and then select "Language."
3. Under "Preferred languages," click on "Add a language."
4. Select the language you'd like to install, choose "English (United States)," and click "Next."
5. Check all the checkboxes except for "Set as my Windows display language," and then click "Install."

After completing these steps, please check if the issue still persists.

For me this didn´t work

For me it didn't work either, tried to install said language but says nothing about ocr. Put the us language up in the order of languages but never made a difference.

I did notice that only the display language is available for all other language packs. I am not admin on my PC so only the display language is available for install and nog the OCR language. So I guess when it will onbe day be promoted from beta it better work for all other OCR installed languages too... A shame!

I didn't download per the prompt, and now the prompt won't return when I open Retype Beta.  How do I get the download option to return so I can use it so the function will work?

If the download prompt for Retype Beta does not appear when you open the application @angelas95749545, you can try the following steps to potentially resolve this issue:

• Reset Preferences

• Uninstall & Reinstall Illustrator

I am sorry to hear that. Just wanted to know if you have tried to incorporate English OCR. I see your input language is set to ITA. Would you mind changing to English and see if that helps?
Here are the steps to follow:

Retype also works on photos and sometimes better than on outlines text.

Please tell us your system and show the photo and also tell us what exactly is happening to you.
