Mac Separate Screens - Illustrator/Photoshop Switching Screens

My issue is already known but the current solutions (linked below) act as if it has been solved where it has not. My issue is that when on multiple screens/desktops on Mac I am attempting to have either Photoshop and/or Illustrator on a screen each. However after a small amount of interaction and sometimes just a time delay the non-primary-screened application flies unceremoniously back to the other screen, sometimes not even to the original 'desktop'.

Panels revert to main screen | Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.10 Yosemite

The current proposed solutions:

Solution #1:

This is not a solution, this is handicapping my entire OS via not using a pretty invaluable workflow which 'separate spaces' allows.

Solution #2:

This solution DOES NOT WORK. I have attempted in both 'None' and 'All Desktop' settings, on both Illustrator and Photoshop. Neither has stopped the switching.

Is anything further being done to fix this issue? It seems pretty damn basic to expect an application to stay on the screen I put it on.

3 apps on 3 monitors Gans, now you're just showing off!

I have discovered something interesting, between some of my development team we decided to test on different workstations to see if everyone had the issue:

Me

  • MacMini Late 2014
  • 2 x DELL u2414H Displays (1920x1080)
  • 2 x Thunderbolt Connections
  • Intel Iris 1536 MB Graphics
  • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
  • MacOS Dock Position: Bottom
  • Separate Spaces

Dev #2

  • MacMini Late 2014
  • 2 x DELL u2414H Displays (1920x1080)
  • 2 x Thunderbolt Connections
  • Intel Iris 1536 MB Graphics
  • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
  • MacOS Dock Position: Right
  • Separate Spaces

Dev #3

  • MacBook Pro (13") - Pre 2015
  • 2 x DELL u2414H Displays (1920x1080)
  • 2 x Thunderbolt Connections
  • Intel Iris 1536 MB Graphics
  • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
  • MacOS Dock Position: Bottom
  • No Separate Spaces

I was the only one getting the issue as Dev #3 didn't utilise separate spaces, but weirdly Dev #2 did use it and had no issues... that's when it occurred to me (when trying to change the Options > Assign to > None/All Screens etc. on his Dock to mess about) that he only had his Dock on one desktop/screen.

Discovery 1

I changed my Dock settings to Position > Right this and voila, I can use both apps on each screen at the same time. The Dock appeared to be involved in how the app decided what screen it was on.

Discovery 2

I then tested if the problem returned once the Dock was back on both screens- and it appears as if toggling it Right then Centre again whilst both apps are opened on the right screens has fixed them to where they were assigned.

Not sure if moving the apps now will cause issues, but this seems to be a fairly robust fix so far in my case.

I am having the same problem. It is costing me billable hours and deadlines.

MountJay - LOL! Not showing off... just lucky!

I'm amazed at the resolution you found! It wouldn't have occurred to me to even try the dock settings.

I'm so glad you found this (to me, very unusual) workaround! I'm going to keep this in mind when I have clients and students with the same problem. Thanks for fixing your very own issue!

Wow - sorry, I wish I could help - but I'm not using Thunderbolt monitors, and I have no problem using 3 different monitors with 3 different apps, when necessary. I can't replicate your problem   I'm on a MacPro, sierra 10.12.5, and using an NVidia GTX 980 (4GB) flashed, so the connections are HDMI (2 monitors use DVI to HDMI adapters). It's got to be something related to the Thunderbolt issue. Looking up your model, it appears that it only supports what you want using Extended mode...

Hi MountJay,

As per your above conversation you are using  macOS Sierra 10.12.4 , please update OS to 10.12.5.

Along with that we would require some more information like

Exact version of Illustrator

Which connection you are using thunderbolt, VGA etc?

Regards

Srishti

Will update on my lunch, but this has been an issue for the past 6 months (likely longer but this is as far as I can specify) over several minor macOS updates so I'm not holding out hope.

Connection wise this has happened to me consistently on two set-ups at work:

First Setup

  • Screen 1: Thunderbolt Connection
  • Screen 2: Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Second Current Setup

  • Screen 1: Thunderbolt Connection
  • Screen 2: Thunderbolt Connection

Current Machine Specs

Mac Mini (Late 2014)

2.6 GHz Intel Core i5

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel Iris 1536 MB

Displays

DELL U2414H Displays (23.5" 1920x1080)

Resolution: Default for display

Rotation: Standard

RR: 60Hertz (NTSC)

Please tell, which version of the MacOS are you using? That'd make a difference in the possible problems and answers.
