Save as template feature for Illustrator documents. Can we make it easier, please?

I saw a forum about saving custom document sizes as templates. I've never been one to save custom ones, but I have always wanted to—to avoid searching through pre-made templates or my old junky ones. BUT, on said forum the only conclusions were: digging around through the native adobe files and plopping in your desired .ai into the templates folder or saving your document at any time as a .ait ( AI Template I presume). So, sure, maybe the .AIT is A solution, but I wanted to present an extremely simple easy user friendly button that would've had me making my own as a freshman graphic designer right away (i'm graduating in a few weeks).
