Screen Flickering & Menu not opening Issue on macOS Sonoma

Hello,

I am fieldtesting macOS Sonoma and I encounter a few (very) annoying bugs with the latest Adobe CC apps (all up to date). For Photoshop I have the 2024 version, for all other apps mentioned it's the latest 2023 version of the app.

Bug 1: Adobe Indesign. The page is "flickering" when moving an object with the selection tool. This flickering can be avoided when hiding the "rulers" in Adobe Indesign with  CMD + R

Bug 2: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop (2024 release): When moving a panel to a secondary computerscreen the submenu can no longer be accessed. When moving that panel to the primary computerscreen it works just fine.

Adobe (and I do hope Adobe reads this) ā€¦ are these Adobe CC related issues, or something Apple has to fix?  For many professionals this will be extremely annoying if this doesn't get fixed. As I mentioned, I am only field testing this at home, ā€¦ not in a production environment, as I have the policy NOT to upgrade right away. That's why I'm field testing.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @John Beeckaert ,

Thank you for sharing the file. We have already logged a bug for the two known issues on macOS Sonoma. We do have workarounds for both issues, so for the first issue wherein the screen is flickering, you can try hiding the rulers, or you can enable GPU from preferences. For the second issue, in which the sub-menu is not opening on an external monitor, you can create a new user account. I will update the discussion as soon as I hear from the team.

Thanks

@The Orchard Ellijayā€¦ you have 2 options for now to solve this for now.
1) If your monitor and GPU supports it (important, because that checkbox is not always checkable), you can check the box for "GPU Performance" in the Indesign Preferences
2) Hide the rulers with CMD+R if they are visible, or activate the "overprint preview".

Not necessarily. All of the reports on the 14.2 beta said that the issue was fixed...and then Apple released it publicly and suddenly it wasn't fixed. So, please, while I understand the frustration, Adobe has plenty of things to fix...this is not one of them.

That's fair enough - I'll gladly accept that as Apple breaking something if we've seen it play ball in beta then fall over in gold.

While everyone is entitled to their opinions, I disagree. A paid software malfunctioning for an entire four months is undeniably a matter that requires attention. Personally, I'm not concerned about assigning blame; as a paying customer relying on software designed for a specific operating system, I simply expect it to function properly. While hiccups are inevitable, a four-month delay in resolving issues is, in my view, unacceptable.

Agree 100%!!!!
I'm a pro graphic designer and rely on performance and speed when it comes to hard/software.
Adobe OR Apple need to get their you-know-what together and especially figure out the screen flicker issue!
I bet both sides point fingers at the other party claiming it's not their error....

I get it, stuff like that can happen with new OS or software, we're all only humans BUT I'm getting kinda tired waiting after 4+ months and nuttin' has changed dispite minor updates from both sides.
RIDICULOUS!

What dispute would that be?

Can you show me anywhere that Apple is blaming Adobe? I'd be genuinely curious to see that because Adobe has always acknowledged its bugs (fixing them of course, is a different story, but I digress) so when they say it's Apple's bug to fix, as has happened in the past, they've been right.

Agreed! I am in the process of BIG app; translation Eng to Span - I will try the rulers but I USE the rulers at the same time. Old school forms design - it is necessary for my customer. - no auto tables, etc.. These have specifics and placements and form fields and different versions and matching stuff that is just like making a MESS! Hard to follow and easy to screw up. It's slow going now; and it's due Monday - ... the bug showed up today.... just after the latest update. It's required so I won't be changing it or it'll screw up all kinds of OTHER things.... so glad I can stop restarting now LOLOLOLOLOL Happy New Year!

Today, Monday, January 22  at 10 am Pacific, Apple released the update to macOS Sonoma 14.3.

According to beta testers, this release should solve the display problems in earlier Sonoma versions. The problems did not occur for everyone. I ran Sonoma 14.2 with no problems so I can't verify that this solves the display problems.

If you are running Sonoma, download the update and see whether your problems have been fixed.

Unfortunately, unresolved problem with the Sonoma update to 14.3. If InDesign has documents open and I plug in a screen or projector, the document remains open, but it's all gray. I need to quit InDesign and relaunch it. Displaying the rules doesn't change the problem...

Issue not solved in Sonoma 14.3 on my end.

MBP 16" 2023 / M2 Pro / 16 GB Ram

Sonoma 14.3 / Indesign 19.1

15+ years of experience with Indesign

And countless hours with technical support!

Had graphic issues for months (well years...) and decided to start 2024 with a functional InDesign, so I devoted a lot of time to make it work!

Support suggested I upgraded to Sonoma, didn't do it.

Then I was told to revert to Ventura (while waiting for "Apple" to fix the issue). I did, but guess what, that didn't work!

Then, upgraded again to Sonoma as I was told the issue was "solved".

I can assure you it is not!

Ever since switching to an Apple Silicon Mac in 2018, the graphics have been buggy, but there were workarounds in the past... but now, nothing works!

Will be back with more details and description of the bugs when I can find more time, as I'm realllllllly behind work.

Well, this is a disappointing report, @KarineCB. I got my hopes up when I saw the two posts above yours. What exactly are you seeing in InDesign on Sonoma 14.3? Are you still getting the widely-reported flickering and the white boxes? A lot of us are waiting to update and any details you can share will be beneficial.

I do have screen redraw issues on my M1, but with GPU Performance disabled, it goes away completely. Otherwise, it's been business as usual. (Ventura 13.6.2, 64GB RAM)

@Barb Binder ,

My configuration is close to yours (Apple M1 MacBook Pro) running InDesign 19.1. I've had excellent results with Sonoma 14.3. No problems to report.

@Steve Werner @Barb Binder

Basically :

White flickering on CPU

Glitches on GPU

No rulers never (who needs them haha)

I'll go on more detail with more screen grabs and videos when I can.

What I need to do is further testing on new documents since all my current files date back from before upgrading. I canā€™t fathom how this issue could be "files related" but this is what tech support as insinuated...

Need to add that what is really problematic is that sometimes I don't see the reality of my document and it's driving me nuts!! When doing proof edits, sometimes the changes I made disappears (well, they are not visually displayed). Basically, I'll remove a coma, change page, do some more edits come back to the previous page, and the comma is still there, but then I'll move the text box or change view and poof itā€™s gone! I'm paranoid a book will go to print with typos because of that!

Proofing a PDF will solve the screen display concerns, @KarineCB. But so far when I've encountered it, it's only been on the page I'm working on, and disabling GPU performance removes it. This sounds a bit different. I wonder if the recompose text command would take care of it for you within InDesign. On your Mac, it's Cmd+Opt+/. This forces InDesign to reflow the text. It's the closest thing we have to a refresh command without changing pages and coming back.

@Steve Werner, this is reassuring, but I'll be honest, I'm nervous. I have a back-up computer I can use if I find myself in the flickering/white box group, but prefer everything about this one. I feel like I'm standing on a cliff, looking down at the water and just don't want to jump!

@Barb Binder Thanks for the recompose text command! It was not in my repertoire. It actually does fix it, as anything else that moves  or changes what's on the page. But itā€™s useful since I can just do the shortcut and stay where I'm at!
As far as taking the jump to Sonoma.... On my end, flickering only on CPU. On GPU, no flickering just random glitches.
But then... there are a few fun things here in Sonoma but no real game changer imo...
