The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

• You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
• Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots). 
• By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke. 
• Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects. 
• Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
• Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Update:

Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it. 

• Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
• Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

1. Denoise 
2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image)
4. Edit
5. AI Selective edits
   
   If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

Trying to use the generative ai remove tool to remove a road (off in the distance) surrounded by green hills. I highlight the road, click apply, and the ai gives me three other road options that I could replace it with......

Face palm.

ai needs to take it's cues from the surrounding areas, not the areas selected to be removed!

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly everyone who has posted a problem photo, we've been able to show how to remove the desired objects.

Lightroom directed me here to provide feedback for the remove ai. So I assumed this was were we left feedback regarding the remove ai. I don't need assistance.

Your comment suggested you weren't aware of the tips necessary to get Remove to actually remove an object rather than replace it with something similar. But if you used those techniques and they didn't help remove the object, then posting a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified photo will help Adobe understand where the tool is falling down.

1. did you crop the image before you used Generative Remove? If you did and there is part of the road in the cropped out portion of the image, then AI uses what you cropped out to think it needs to complete the road. Always do Genertive Remove BEFORE you crop.
2. If ANY park of the road wasn’t selected, then AI will try to replace the road. Use “refine” of you missed an area

Adobe recommends that Remove be applied before cropping (see their recommended order of edits in the first post). The Remove tool looks at all the pixels of the uncropped photo, so if you select just the part of an object visible in the crop and leave parts of it unselected in the uncropped portion, Remove will generate a replacement that best matches the unselected bits. This is one of the common causes of the complaint, it "replaces instead of removes".  See this article for a more thorough explanation with examples:

In general I do NOT want to use generative AI.  I prefer content aware.  Then it is using pixels that I created, not ones from someone else's photo.

Not intuitive or simple and doesn't work very well if at all.  Sosemwhat confusing.  Photoshop removal tool is much easier and simpler to use.  I'd give this app a D-.

Have had issues with Generative AI selecting an area outside the photo, leading to either no replacement, or a gray patch over the selected area. When trying to select a corner that has vignetting from a filter that gets in the way (Yes I have tried all of the "Ultra Thin" filters, this lens always gives a vignette with any filter on it.), the results are minimal or LR selects an area outside the box as described above. Cannot move the selection inside to the actual photo, and switching to another form of Remove yields the same results. Have to delete the selection and reselect with the new tool.
