P: Lightroom iPad/iPhone Device overheats & brightness dims

Community Beginner ,
Dec 19, 2017 Dec 19, 2017

I haven't found anything related to this in online searches, so i thought i would ask Lightroom users.

I have Lightroom mobile installed on my iPhone 7 and when i use it, the phone gets very hot. If the ambient temp is 90 or better (which happens quite often here in Florida), the phone will overheat and shut down after a while. I used it without that happening yesterday (ambient temps around 75), but the phone was still quite hot. I have a pretty thin Spigen case on the phone, and it doesn't get hot with anything other apps.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

Steve

Converting this to a bug just to be clear that we do acknowledge the reports here and have a ticket logged for the engineers to investigate.

Please share specific steps used when this occurs.

February 5, 2024 Update
[WORKAROUND]

Although it's not ideal, it may help if you enable ‘battery saver’ mode, which throttles the GPU then Lightroom performs much more slowly BUT the overheating/screen dimming issue no longer occurs.

Welcome to the Lightroom Community @JoshuaKlug. I'll help you figure this out. What version of iOS are you working on?

Log on to Lightroom Web (https://lightroom.adobe.com) & check for all the images that have synced & uploaded to the cloud. Once you're sure everything is backed up to the cloud, try reinstalling Lightroom & let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Same issue here, gets hot very fast. Can only get a few minutes of editing in before its to hot and the screen starts dimming.  And the Battery drains extremely fast.

any update to this issue? Any solution? I am experiencing the same issue. My ipad pro 6th generation, with ios version 16.4.1, lightroom version 8.3.1 is dimming frequently while im editing photos. I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the lightroom app.

it is so frustrating that i cannot see the brightness accurately. Its really disappointing. Looking to use different photo editing software as an option.

I am also getting this and I'm absolutely furious having just spent a fortune on an M2 iPad. What is the point in Apple giving it a chip that's so powerful it can only be run for about 20 seconds in Lightroom before the screen dims to such a degree it is impossible to see what you are doing. The only workaround I've established so far is to use power saver mode but it still happens eventually. Not sure if this is Apple or Adobe's fault but Adobe need to do something about this even if it means introducing a setting in Lightroom that deliberately bottlenecks the CPU. Unnacceptable.

It doesn't just become really hot, the screen dims to 50% even though the brightness is set to 100%.

It's really insane to spend $2,000 on an iPad M2 that can handle an absurd amount of processing load on top of a ridiculously expensive Adobe Suite subscription at $700 a year only to lose 50% of your screen light after 2 minutes or so of selective brush masking because Lightroom is so ridiculously resource consuming.

This.

To add additional details, I'm using a Sony Alpha A7rIV 61mp RAW .ARW images (admittedly, very high resolution photos) that cause the screen to dim to 50% after about 3 minutes of editing, it's almost immediate if I jump straight to selective brushing.

The issues highlighted here seem to be related to the same issued highlighted in this thread:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-ecosystem-cloud-based-discussions/screen-dimming-when-runni...

I will merge the two threads and hope we get more potential solutions.

For what it's worth, I'm not seeing this on my 2nd generation iPad Pro 11" model.

Still have the same problem. I don't need to do any editing just browsing through the photos (presumably it's rendering them) causes the screen to dim sometimes so much I cannot do any editing whatsoever.

It's an old thread but this is a very strange issue for sure. I have a iPad mini with a A15 processor (the USB-c port version which is very handy for loading images in the field) and it just flies with all my raw images and doesn't overheat. Doesn't seem to make sense that a M series processor would struggle or even get hot so it does sound like a bug to me specific to that processor on iPadOS.

Having the same issue. My iPhone 14 Pro Max screen dims within 30 seconds of using the app to a point it’s nearly impossible to see what I’m doing.

Hey @m28559786w2rw. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Is there a particular series of steps or actions you take in Lightroom that leads to this behavior? If it only takes 30 seconds, would you mind recording your screen & sharing the video with us here, or via direct message?

What version of iOS & Lightroom are you working on? Ensure you're working on Lightroom 8.4 & if the issue still exists, follow these steps:

  • Log on to Lightroom Web (https://lightroom.adobe.com) & ensure everything is synced & backed up to the cloud & no items are pending sync.
  • Once ensured, uninstall Lightroom mobile from your device, restart the device (optionally) & reinstall Lightroom mobile.

Let us know if the issue exists.
Thanks!

I have the same issue, but on ipad air 5th gen M1 chip...

Just browsing through photos makes the ipad so hot it dims the screen...

Used to be that this only happened doing masks manually (not presets, I don't use them so I don't know), now it's anytime Lightroom is open.

It is using way too much CPU.

Running Lr v8.4.0 4AF942/102

iPadOS 16.5.1

Same, if they've not sorted this in the next month I am cancelling my membership and moving elsewhere. Also happens on a friends iPad Pro so the problem is obviously very well known Adobe are just chosing to do nothing about it.

@Ási2812102879vo  @

Just to be clear, a phone overheating is because the manufacturer failed to provide adequate cooling, in this case Apple failed to run sustained performance tests. Many phones are designed for small bursts of activity to make the phone feel "snappy" and fast. They really are not designed for sustained processing.

There are really three common solutions which might help:

1. Go into you iPhone settings and look for peak performance management. Make sure this is set to prevent the phone from overheating. I can never recall if that is enable or disable.

2. Assuming Apple has temp sensors, and exposes the information, Adobe might be able to implement a watcher thread which can monitor phone temperature and automatically add processing pauses in the application. This is technically difficult to implement and has many variables involved, and will slow down the application.

3. If Apple exposes the management interface, Adobe might be able to implement the second option via the system interface which is less work (this is an option on Android, I am no longer current on iOS).

I'm now convinced we need to wait for Adobe to acquire a new application to fix this. They don't make software anymore and just acquire.

Same issue here. I had iPad 9th gen with A13 Bionic chip and using Lightroom but i had little heat and it was working seamlessly. Now i have iPad Pro 4th gen 11 inch with M2 chip whenever i use Lightroom i noticed device is getting too much heat and drains battery very quickly. It still makes good editings with no issue but heat and battery drain are not good with espacially M2. We talk about M2 chip.. 🙂

Exact same problem here. Latest official iPadOS. I think Lightroom is too heavy for devices without active cooling.

There are reports from people with non-M chip iPad's that they don't overheat..... So less powerful chip, no overheating.

This is probably some quirk on Lr code and how M chip does things different from A chips....

Yes, Lightroom is very fast with the M2, actually a joy, but that dimming of screen after a short while is literally killing any kind of serious usability.

Is there any update on the issue? My iPad also overheats and dimms the screen while using Lightroom, no matter what I do. I have a 12.9 inch iPad Pro, 5th generation, OS 16.6.1. Ot is very frustrating and renders the workflow rather terrible.

My iPhone 12 Pro heats up when using the lightroom application around 5 minutes via iOS 17.0.3. As a result, the screen brightness will drop by itself. Even if we turn off the automatic screen brightness.

I already have discussed this with the Apple support team and they said the Lightroom application needs to be compatible with the latest iOS version.
