When I tried to import HIEF photos taken with a Sony camera from the SD card using Lightroom for iphone, only the photos with portrait composition could not be imported.

I would like to know if this is a problem that is only happening on my device.

Are you able to see and import the same images from your connected device into the iOS Photos app?  In general, if images are compatible with your platform and iOS Photos app can see/use the images, then Lightroom's import screen should also see the images.

Is it this Lightroom shows blank thumbs, or doesn't show images at all?

Thumbnails are displayed in Lightroom import screen.
I get a message that it failed when import and it cannot be imported.
Portrait compositions are also imported in the iOS photo app.

Hello @Toru33081196n59l

Thanks for the additional details and screenshots.  So that we can try to reproduce this for debugging, can you answer a few more questions:

  • What Lightroom app version are you using -- is it the latest v9.0?  (see app Settings > About)
  • What is the Sony camera model?  and camera firmware version?
  • Are the HEIFs 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 (or does that not seem to matter)?
  • And it's only HEIF, but not JPG or Son'y Raw images (ARW?)

I want to confirm I have the same issue, but on Lightroom for iPad. All HEIF files are visible on the import screen, but after clicking import, only the landscape orientation versions are successfully imported.

Here's some additional information:

- 11" iPad Pro with M2 chip (from 2022)

- Latest version of Lightroom 9.0.1

- Photos are 26MP and 60MP from Sony A7CR with latest firmware version 1.0.1

- Import through SD card

- All the HEIF files can be imported into Apple's native photos app (I've also managed to then share them from there into Lightroom which does work)

- However, in Apple's native photos app only, the image previews seem to be rotated 90° and only adjust back to portrait if you zoom in or attempt to edit the photograph
