Background eraser; continuous/contiguous/100%tolerance+hardness should mean erase everything in the brush circle even if blotches of color are separated. But it doesnt. What am I missing here...

Hi

A couple of comments

1. Where colours are separated , use discontiguous.   Contiguous looks for connection between the colour.

2. 100% widens the tolerance for similar colours but does not extend to every colour. So erasing red will still  leave blue.

To erase everything under the brush,  just use the eraser tool.

Learn how to use a layer mask.... never use an eraser - I promise it will change everything and improve your skills immensely.
