Colours print wrong on Photoshop and InDesign yet Illustrator is correct

As title.

 

Running CC 2020 on Windows 10. Printer is OKI C9655 using the PS (PostScript) Printer Driver.

 

All the programs report synced Colour Settings. Yet only Illustrtator seems to be the only one thats printing colours correct. InDesign and Photoshop are printing magenta as red, cyan and yellow look much duller.

 

Have tried the following:

  • Checked the print settings are exactly the same as Illustrators. All are set for the printer to manage colours. Setting it to the program to manage doesnt make a difference.
  • Checked colour profiles are all synced using Bridge.
  • Checked Windows Colour Management is kept as default.
  • Created CMYK document in photoshop as a tiff file.
  • Uninstalled all OKI drivers using the OKI Uninstaller then reinstalled PS driver only. No change.

 

Dont really know what else to try so any ideas would be helpful.

Colour policies and print settings seem OK

 

The prints you show do both look wrong for sure, the skintone should be natural and the monochrome should be neutral. 

 

Illustrator's option for "preserve CMYK numbers" does potentially affect output

read about that here:

"Preserve RGB Numbers (for RGB output) or Preserve CMYK Numbers (for CMYK output)

Determines how Illustrator handles colors that do not have a color profile associated with them (for example, imported images without embedded profiles). When this option is selected, Illustrator sends the color numbers directly to the output device. When this option is deselected, Illustrator first converts the color numbers to the color space of the output device.

Preserving numbers is recommended when you are following a safe CMYK workflow. Preserving numbers is not recommended for printing RGB documents."

If you have CMYK data with embedded ICC profile (such as the test image) you don't need to use Preserve CMYK Numbers.

 

Unless your laser printer manufacturer worked hard to make their machine simulate FOGRA 39L behaviour (they may have, its feasible), I'd be surprised if you actually do get correct colour by setting the printer profile to FOGRA 39L, that is indeed the document profile, but the prInter profile should describe the specific printer's output. 

FOGRA 39L is a dataset used to make ICC proflles that describe a sheetfed offset press on good coated paper. 

 

How are you judging printed colour acccuracy?

Is the monitor display good quality and calibrated and profiled with a good utility and hardware sensor ( a colorimenter)?

Ok. After playing around a bit. I get correct colours in Illustrator if the "Preserve CMYK Numbers" is ticked (for cmyk documents) in the Print Dialog. But Photoshop doesnt seem to have that option. So in Photoshop I have to set it to "Photoshop Manages Colors" and set the "Printer Profile" to "Coated FOGRA39" which is what the cmyk test.tif doc is currently using. Now colours are printing correct.

 

Not sure why Photoshop doesnt have a Preserve CMYK Numbers option.

The test cmyk image looks similar. Only a very slight difference, not as pronounced as the image I was using before. There is a yellow hue on both though. Photo of prints to get rough idea.

These are the colour settings used on both when printing your CMYK test image...

As an aside. This was the image I used to test with beforehand, its simply 4 squares with pure CMYK colours.

Open it in Illustrator and also Photoshop

Without any profile changes or conversions on opening!

send to the OKI with "printer manages color" from each

do the 2 results match?

 

If not, please upload a screenshot of the Photoshop color settings dislog, same for Illustrator

Well, none of your points indicates that you are actually using color management, so naturally you won't get consistent results. Just because the settings are synced across the suite doesn't mean that they are actually automatically switched on everywhere. That's an important distinction. The critical steps still apply: You actually have to assign the profiles to the documents and use proof previews for predictable output and in fact I'm willing to bet that the "correct" printing is merely a lucky coincidence due to how AI may generate the PS file internally. So unless you are 100% certain that you have established correct CM already, you may need to spend some time sitting down, reading some boring articles in the respective online help sections for each program and then take it from there step by step. Otherwise exact info on your actual color settings, color profile usage, document modes and so on is required to unriddle this.
