How can I prevent Photoshop from automatically cropping my CR2 image to the ratio it was shot in

Whenever I open a 1:1 ratio image on Photoshop it crops the sides making it a literal square. I lose a lot of the photograph and I haven't found a way to retain the full/original image. Any ideas?

    So for anyone reading this with the same issue, I haven't managed to solve this frustrating issue through Photoshop 2024 v 25.3.1 using ACR v 16.1.

     

    I briefly went through the replies on this thread and it doesn't seem at the time of writing this that the Adobe Camera Raw plugin [v 16.1 ] allows you to reset an in-camera crop [in both the main ACR window or in Preferences]. In fact when I open the Crop tab in ACR, under Preset the option Free does not display the image's true aspect ratio and in addition the option for As Shot is greyed out.

     

    To reiterate what Sohayb was trying to say in his original post: Even basic photo applications load the CR2 in it's full aspect ratio whereas Photoshop's ACR plugin only displays the in-camera crop with no option to remove it.

     

    The only solution I could find was to download Canon's DPP v4 app for processing CR2 files and in the app under Crop > Aspect Ratio - as expected - is the option to remove the crop [select Free under Aspect Ratio then Clear].

     

    I can now process CR2 files in DPP and under the main Tools menu select Transfer to Photoshop for further retouching / grading. DPP is quite a good app and they have made it easy to process images and then send them instantly to PS, though ACR's user-interface is a bit more simplsitic / easier to use.

     

    I can only assume this is a bug with ACR and hope they resolve it soon.

    Try turning off automatic lens profile settings. If that doesn't work, open the files in Canon's Digital Photo Professional and reset the crop there. In the future, don't shoot cropped in-camera as Adobe has problems with it.

      The RAW File may have ACR settings that have a crop setting you would need to reset that crop setting.  ACR Default settings should not have a Crop Setting.  Previously process RAW files can have Crop Settings

      Here is image straight from camera. The first one is captured with live view turned on and it does have crop tol icon in the top right corner of thumbnail without any previous processing or opening in ACR. Next two files are captured with the same settings but through viewfinder and as you can see, entire images are visible without any crop or crop tool icon as indicator. When I open images in ACR the first one is cropped while other two images which are captured with the same settings are not cropped at all. Why that and how to explain? I do not know, I will quite here because I may further confuse someone.

        In the viewfinder what does the crop symbol icon in the top right corner indicate? Is the Camera's firmwared cropping the image.  In ACR can you reset the crop are the pixels in the RAW Data?  ACR and Photoshop do not write raw files ACR reads the data in the raw file.

        You probably missed step to activate the Crop tool before clicking Escape to reset crop. Please try again following all steps described or activate the Crop tool and reset it. That worked for me.

          To activate the crop tool do I simply just click the crop tool at the top or do I have to do something else?

          Thanks. I've tried this, not working. When I press esc after having selected crop tool in ACR, ACR window closes. Any suggestions?

          I have Canon camera and here is what I see in Bridge when shoting 1:1 in cr2 and JPEG format, they both look the same: square. Notice the Crop tool icon in the top right corner, that's the key. Raw file still contains data outside the crop while JPEG does not, it is square image without any chance to reset it to normal 3:2 ratio.

          The only solution which I found so far is following:

          • Right cick on image in Bridge > Open With > Photoshop.
          • Activate the Crop tool in ACR.
          • Press Esc key.
          • Click on Open to open image in Photoshop, it opens full uncropped image in Photoshop.
          • Thumbnail in Bidge will change to normal.
          • Note: you can also reset crop by opening image in ACR from Bridge then activating and reseting crop as explained in steps 2 and 3 then click on Done button in ACR to confirm and save changes.

              When you crop an image you are cutting off image content. That is what cropping does. If you use Content Aware scale to change your 3:2 Aspect Ratio camera's image to an Image with a square 1:1 Aspect Ratio most of your scaled images contents will not be acceptable to you. There will be too much unacceptable distortion.  If you use Content Aware Scale interactivity and do some masking for Content Aware Scale you may be able to get acceptable results for some images. You should not expect to be able to rescale a landscape or portrait  close up of a person head resized to a 1:1 aspect ration and see an acceptable human head.

              Thank you. I understand this but when I'm opening a normal cr2 file on Photoshop it 1. Automatically opens on Camera Raw and 2. The file is cropped automatically on both sides although the original files are actually fine. I'm not sure why Photoshop is doing this. It is a problem definitely

                Reset your ACR defaults to Adobe's ACR default settings.  Adobe settings do not crop.

                  You'll want to change your camera settings to full-frame and not 1:1, which is a square crop. Some cameras ignore this internal cropping information when capturing RAW files and some literally crop to 1:1.

                    Thanks. 1:1 aspect was accidentally selected for these few photographs but they're still fine. On preview when I open them on mac they're fine. On Photoshop they're suddenly cropped on camera raw. I don't get this.

                    1:1 ratio is literally square. If you shot 1:1 then that's what you have in whatever format you shot image.

                      Thanks. Why is it when I open the image in preview (I use Mac) it is fine but on Photoshop it completely crops both sides. Is there a way to prevent this from happening.
