I have a large black and white image which I wanted to add color to but it does not allow me to Paine color with the brushes.

Is the document in RGB mode?
Check the brush tool opacity and blend mode or reset the tool.
Otherwise post a full size screenshot of the open doc in Photoshop either the layer panel visible and the brush or other tool active.
