What's the best way to separate a photo into separate parts?

I have a photo that I'm trying to separate into four separate pictures so that when you put them together you find out what the full photo is. The problem is, I'm brand new to photoshop and I do not know how to do this. Does anyone have any detailed suggestions? (Note: The pieces of the picture are not supposed to be perfect squares, but shaped specifically to show the part I want to show)

Duplicate the image into 4 layers. Use a layer mask for each separate section.

I immediately imagined four equal squares/rectangles (depending on the source image ratio). Do you mean that you want irregular shapes? Can you post a mockup image with an outline indicating how the quadrants should be shaped?

yes, irregular shapes.  Something like this, with the lines drawn dividing the different pieces

Here are some possible ways:

  • layer mask, as suggested by @Stephen Marsh
  • vector mask
  • clipping mask
  • cut pieces on separate layers without any masking

For any of these options, you will need a selection or a vector path.
