P: Clipping Mask base layer removal releases the Clipping Mask chain

In Finishing (retouching), we often need to replace the Base Layer of the Clipping Mask chain of layers. When this is done we simply delete the original Base Layer, which breaks the clipping chain. This also happens when any of the layers within the 'clipped' group is duplicated. It seems counter productive.

 

It would save time and would seem intuitive if, when the Base Layer of the Clipping Mask chain of layers is removed, the Layer above it would automatically become the new Clipping Mask Base Layer.
