P: Please add AVIF file support

LEGEND ,
Sep 11, 2020 Sep 11, 2020

With AVIF being supported in modern web browsers the need for AVIF as a save as option or export to option would be very helpful.  For those of us that still use Photoshop as a primary graphic editor (even for simple web sites) this will become more and more important as JPG's are replaced.

AVIF export is now available in Photoshop v26.8. Update your version of Photoshop, and you should find it under File > Save a Copy.

Good news! We are making good progress on adding AVIF support to Photoshop, and it will be coming to Photoshop Beta soon.

Is this legit?

Is there a website announcement somewhere to verify this?
Will this work with all export dialogs?

It's legit. Stephen is "for real," Senior Director of Product Management for Photoshop at Adobe.

Yes, this is legit. I lead the product management team for Photoshop.

Right now, we are only building it for File > Save As Copy > AVIF

Cool! And happy to see the options to keep all meta-data 👍(which is why I usually use the legacy Save for Web functionality rather than the newer Export dialog(*)). Of course it would be convinient to have support where I usually export for web-use. But it will work fine via Save as Copy too 🙂

I also notice there's no option to adjust bit-deepth. Maybe that is coming later - or maybe it is already build into the Quality-slider? I don't know how useful >8bit is for sRGB SDR, but for widegamut color profiles and especially for HDR I guess it will be very useful. And yes, it is so far just a (very promising) beta-version screenshot 🙂

(*) I'm still on Photoshop 2024. Haven't yet dared trying to update to PS 2025, so I don't know how it looks there.

With AVIF now widely supported in modern web browsers, it’s time for Photoshop to include AVIF as a "Save As" or "Export" option. For those of us using Photoshop as a primary graphic editor, even for simple websites, this feature is becoming crucial as JPGs are gradually replaced. Let’s make web design workflows more efficient Adobe, please add AVIF support!

Thank you very much Stephen. At least thank you for answering our request. i believe most of our issues are not the updates but being feel leftover here. i believe your community management can take this comments more seriously to answer us. I am already committed to Adobe and would like to be committed as long as i been feel "cared". Regards,

I was unable to open an AVIF file until I installed a 3rd party plugin. What happens when you try and open one - does it open in the RAW mode?

"can get away with treating their customers with the same disdain and lack of professionalism."

I hear what you are saying, but Counterpoint: Google, Microsoft, Amazon. I spent 60k with google for a client, and couldn't even get assigned a rep in a US timezone. We'd meet at 2 am local.

All of these companies are this way. But yeah as someone who has used ( and promoted ) Adobe since before they had layers, it is definitely a disappointment.

@SSL-ADT

I've moved your post to the primary thread about AVIF. It will be coming soon to the beta, and the Adobe team will make an announcement in this thread.

I thought AVIF was only lossless.

Please define the word "soon". Days, weeks or months?

And what do you mean by "beta"? Photoshop BETA 2026 or something? Who gets it?

@SSL-ADT wrote "Please define the word "soon". Days, weeks or months?"

I am a volunteer who does not work for Adobe. Stephen Nielson, Senior Product Manager for Photoshop, used the word "soon" in his pinned reply. I am guessing that it means the same as you do — days, weeks, or months, but not years. When AVIF support is available, it will be anounced in this thread.

The public Beta version of Photoshop is for testing and for providing feedback to the developers. New features go there first for testing, then make it into the released version.

Any updates on similar support for JPEG XL?  (hopefully including both its lossy and lossless options)  We badly need it for projects we're working on now that it has widespread support across macOS/iOS/Safari.  It's been available in Afinity Photo for some time...

AVIF export is now available in the Photoshop Beta. Make sure you are on the latest version of Photoshop Beta, and then go to File > Save a Copy, and choose AVIF from the Format dropdown.

This feature is still in Beta so that we can collect feedback before releasing to everyone in the main app. Please comment here on any feedback you have!

@Stephen NielsonLooks great, thank you for adding support! Really nice to see the granular options offered here.

A few areas of feedback:

  • Alpha compression settings are ignored, file size never changes with any of the options. Seems like user input is ignored.
  • When choosing lossless, should probably force 444 sub-sampling (or warn user) as the other options result in loss of fidelity.
  • With high quality settings, slow encoding actually produces a larger file than medium encoder speeds. Is this expected within the AVIF spec?

GOOD MORNING
I can save avif images normally in Photoshop. However, I tested saving an image in webp with a transparent background and converted it to avif in Pikflow. However, when I load this image in Photoshop, it goes straight to Camera Raw and has a black background, although the images when loaded in other applications such as Canva have a transparent background.
Does anyone know if there is a way to solve this?
I am not using the beta version

Ok so no support for 32 bits with AVIF.

- Can someone explain how to convert a 32bits HDR image to 16bits without loosing / distorting the HDR part of the image (gamma=1, expsoure=0 without clipping HDR)? This must be possible since ACR can export to AVIF and thereafter open in Photoshop as a 16bits while HDR is preserved!

- I imported AVIF and JPEG XL to IOS Photos (on iPhone 16 Pro). Only AVIF from ACR shows HDR in IOS. This is not Adobe problem I know but please we need a solution to edit HDR in Photoshop and get back to devices supporting HDR.

Thanks!
