Canon C200, C-LOG 3 footage colour issues, Projects created Prior to Premier Pro 24.4/24.5 Update

Hi there. I am experiencing issues with how Canon C200 footage, shot in C-LOG 3's colour is being interpreted by Premier Pro 24.4/24.5.0 on OSX 13.6.7 (22G720). Essentially, when opening projects (from this April 2024 and before) which were edited using versions of Premier Pro prior to the 24.4 update, the colour of C200 footage does not match 1:1 with exported timeline master files (Prores 422 exports of final edits).

An example project is using two cameras, a Canon C200 and a Canon C300, details of colour settings and file encoding are below:

1. Canon C200, filmed in C-Log 3 (.MXF OP1a, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Long GOP High Profile 4:2:0 Unconstrained Coding)
2. Canon C300, filmed in C-Log (MXF OP1a, MPEG-2 420 MPHL)

I opened the project in Premiere 24.5, dragged in a master file for colour reference (exported from a previous version of Premiere before 24.4), compared the colour of the master file to the same shot on timeline in the project, and colours specifically of C200 shots do not match, however, the C300 shots match exactly 1:1 with the master file.

I have attached two screenshots that highlight this issue. The first screenshot is as the grade looked previously on a C200 shot, the second is as it looks now... considerably more washed out.

I have also attached a screenshot of the Lumetri Settings in the project for reference. Essentially, what I was expecting was to be able to open a project up and have the grade look exactly as I had left it then, and as it always has done. Now, only for C200 shots, the grade does not match. I have tried experimenting with the viewer Gamma, 'Auto Detect Log Video Colour Space' box on/off, 'Auto Tone Map Media', and other lumetri settings... no combination of anything will show the footage exactly as it once looked.

I can also confirm, viewing the timeline in Premiere Pro 24.3.0 or earlier shows the footage as it should be (how I left it, matching the master export file). I have been able to replicate this on second computer also running OSX 13.6.7

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but help would be appreciated, thanks.

First question, did you apply any LUTs to normalize, or did you manually do that process?

 

If LUTs, where did you store and apply the LUTs?

 

Second, have you tried having both auto detect log and auto tonemapping on? They are for some things interactive.

Hi Neil, 

No luts were applied during the entire process. When I mak adjustments to footage, I use the basic lumetri controls manually.

With regards to 'auto detect log' and 'auto tonemapping', with both ticked on, the footage looks considerably more different. I have attached two frame exports.

Hi there Kevin, certainly, here is the information using the template. After a bit more testing, it appears the problem I am having is with the C200 footage regardless of whether it has been adjusted in lumetri or not, so I have reflected steps to compensate for that.

• Issue: Canon C200 C-log 3 footage colour appears differently in older premiere projects (version 2.3.x and below) vs the same footage in 24.5.0


• Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 24.5.0


• Operating system: OSX 13.6.7 (22G720)


• System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
◦ 3.7 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5
◦ Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB (not sure about driver)
◦ 40 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
◦ Premiere installed on internal hybrid drive, project and footage located on server, connected via cat6 cable

• Video format: Canon C200, filmed in C-Log 3 (.MXF OP1a, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Long GOP High Profile 4:2:0 Unconstrained Coding)

• Workflow details: C200 clip is dropped onto timeline, timeline exported as prores 422.

• Steps to reproduce
1. Add Canon C200 C-Log 3 footage (as above) into Premiere 24.3 or below (example using 23.6.7).
2. Export clip using ‘Apple ProRes 422’ preset. Save project.
3. Duplicate project in finder.
4. Open duplicated project in Premiere 24.5.0.
5. Flick between Premiere versions 24.5.0 and 23.6.7, both open at once. The colour doesn’t match.
6. Export the same clip using the same ‘Apple ProRes 422’ preset.
7. Add both exported clips into either project, the colour does not match.


• Expected result: The colour should match both in the program viewer on 24.5.0 and 23.6.7 and on exports.
• Actual result -  They do not match exactly. C200 footage in 24.5.0 appears more washed out in viewer and exports.


I would like to note in both of these instances, display colour management is on and a second control shot (c300, c log) is also on both timelines and appears identical in the program monitor and on exports in both versions of Prem listed above. Once again, to highlight this is an issue with the C200 C-log 3 footage specifically.

Hi @Kevin-Monahan ,

 

I actually reported a possible similar issue a while back regarding iPhone 15 Apple Log ProRes material.

We are currently running 23.5 Premiere and After Effects and there the issue is present in After Effects only.

The image appears way to flat and it's not a data/video levels issue. No management operations are applied.

@SLNK-1 for your case, perhaps also test the file in AE against the reference export out of the older Premiere version.

You're doing an excellent job of troubleshooting here, and I commend you for it! 

 

I would also love a clip of both the C300 and C200 to test myself, for comparison and attempt to replicate on my system. I have pm-d you about that.

@R Neil Haugen, my apologies, I had named the files, but didn't caption them when I uploaded them. The higher exposed shot (top) is with auto-detect log and auto-tone mapping on, the lesser exposed shot (bottom) is without auto-detect log and auto-tone mapping on. I've replied to your PM, thanks very much for your help.

@Shebbe, thanks for the heads up, I'll investigate this next when I get a moment.
