P: Premiere Pro 24 issue with the GPU on Macbooks Video Preview

This is happening on all of my premiere pro projects. Started when I updated to Premiere 2024. When I look at a video in either source or the timeline, it glitches (see photo). I haven't found anyway to view my footage. The only way to see the real video is by playing the video. This makes it impossible to color correct or colorgrade footage. Please help fix this, it basically is preventing me from editing.

I found a similar issue right after I posted.

I changed my rendering setting to "solo software mercury playback engine" and this fixed the issue.

Hello Alexander,

Thanks for the bug report. Do you have an Intel-based Mac or is it Apple Silicon-based? If it is Intel-based, does this bug report sound similar to your issue? Please let the team know. I hope we can help you soon. Sorry for the problem.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

Adobe Premiere Pro community. I see, from all your post on the Adobe Community forum, that you have been experiencing a problem with clips failing to properly preview in the Source Monitor. Clips either go black and white with pixelation blocks or have varying pixelation issues on the preview window. We want to fix this and understand the frustrations you have all been going through. To do so, we first need to be able to reproduce the failure here at Adobe.  Unfortunately, our attempts at re

If you are getting that exact program monitor view, on a PC, you're the first I've seen, out of many.

So is it exactly the same image seen on the original post?

No, not the same glitch. I was getting distorted video in the program monitor after updating to the latest version but can't seem to replicate the problem now thankfully.

I remember seeing someone else with a similar glitch post here and thought I replied to that post. I looked into my history to see if I could find the post and came up with a different post that diverts to this one for some reason so maybe my comment was intended on another post that no longer exists. I see that on my history, I went to this page yet it links back to this thread: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/footage-glitching-in-program-monitor-and-export/idi...

This is happening to me, as well. None of the proposed fixes worked. Macbook Pro 2019 intel processor.

It appears to be fine when I disconnect the external monitor. Not ideal, but at least I can move forward for now.

MacOS Sonoma 14.5
Media stored on external OWC Raid 5 connected via Thunderbolt3

Whether or not I export directly in Premiere or Media Encoder, random brief moments will have this distortion. Subsequent re-exports won't show the distortion in the same clips/moments, but one clue is the first screenshot where the white matte is unaffected, but the PNG within does show it (using the transform effect).

Previous exports before updating from 24.3 of the first project (first two screen shots) didn't have this issue at all. The second screenshot is ProRes4444 with static Motion adjustment.

The last screenshot is a multicam where CAM 1 is an attached & enabled proxy rendered from Media Encoder.

It just suddenly happened, but whenever I play footage from the timeline, the program monitor works fine. But, when I pause, the screen is glitchy, sometimes white and sometimes black. I'm not sure exactly what happened. I can't even describe what I did, I was just following the lessons from the Adobe in a Classroom Book for my editing class.

I have the latest version, 24.5, and have no third-party apps installed. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and that didn't work.

Nevermind, I solved it by using the tried and true "turning it off and on again."

Hi Kevin—thanks for the reply. The other bug report linked isn't quite the problem I'm having, as it's not during playback in the Source or Program monitor, but after export and baked into the .mp4 or .mov file that's created.

I can attest that using CleanMyMac Software did fix the bug for me, fingers crossed it stays working.

Am having the same issue. Switched to the Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and the problem resoved. Just upgraded to recent PP version, so have to assume it's that combined with the flawed Sonoma OS. Very frustrating.

Hi Neil

Has anyone managed to fix the issue by downgrading Sonoma to a previous OS do you know? Or how are people getting over this problem?

Thanks

Just to update—today the issue is appearing during playback, so it appears to be linked to the other thread. I was able to get a clean export by turning off hardware encoding, so perhaps a GPU issue as others have suggested.

At the moment you can't do nothing guys. The support here from Adobe is ridicolus they always said:

"The team is investigating this issue now". Always like that, looks like a bot.
I have this problem from like february 2024. I read everything about this and I also do everything:
-I formatted the PC
-I restored the system
-I restored the nvram
-I took my PC to the Apple Store and from the diagnostics it appears to be working perfectly without even a single malfunction or defect
-I cleaned all of Premiere's cache
-I tried to downgrade Premiere from a previous version
-I also restored Premiere.
I've really tried everything but I still have this problem, I'm seriously thinking of changing my Macbook with an M3 because in the end this is what Apple is aiming for, updating its machines.
My Macbook I9 32gb of Ram 1tb of storage paid more than 4 thousand euros after 4 years I see it with this problem on Premiere and it is valued at around 400 euros.
After 7 months I still haven't found the solution, it seems like the fans are struggling and when they heat up too much Premiere gives that glitch effect on preview and also in export.

Hey Giraso,

Sorry to hear its caused you continual problems and nothing you have tried has worked. Are you on Mac OS Sonoma? And have you tried downgrading the OS to ventura or a previous OS. I am considering trying this but if it still doesnt work i dont want to bother.

Have you also tried cleaning the dust out of the system and using a cooling fan? both things on my list to try before i give up completely.

Thanks

Kirsty

Hello Brother, Yes I have Sonoma the last firmware.
I read about a guys who took the macbook to apple genius, they clenaed the dust inside but nothing happen, He still have the problem.
About the cooling fan to be honest I don't know and also I didn't downgrading the OS to ventura or a previous OS. I don't know if is gonna work also is very frustrating because it shouldn't give these types of problems and adobe does nothing to solve them.
Let me know if you gonna fix with this two kind of solutions you told me, keep in touch brother.

I have always had a fan, and just upgraded to a new one.  This is 100% clearly not an individual computer problem, or an Apple problem. It is a Adobe interacting with Intel issue.  It's not on our end.
