P: Premiere Pro 24 issue with the GPU on Macbooks Video Preview

This is happening on all of my premiere pro projects. Started when I updated to Premiere 2024. When I look at a video in either source or the timeline, it glitches (see photo). I haven't found anyway to view my footage. The only way to see the real video is by playing the video. This makes it impossible to color correct or colorgrade footage. Please help fix this, it basically is preventing me from editing.

I found a similar issue right after I posted.

I changed my rendering setting to "solo software mercury playback engine" and this fixed the issue.

Hi,

Adobe Premiere Pro community. I see, from all your post on the Adobe Community forum, that you have been experiencing a problem with clips failing to properly preview in the Source Monitor. Clips either go black and white with pixelation blocks or have varying pixelation issues on the preview window. We want to fix this and understand the frustrations you have all been going through. To do so, we first need to be able to reproduce the failure here at Adobe.  Unfortunately, our attempts at re

I followed the advice of the thread and took my macbook in for cleaning, it seemed to solve the problem for a couple of weeks and then all of a sudden part way through editing a project, its returned on the previews, genuinely unbelievable how long this has been a known issue now and how many people are experiencing the problem and nothing sorted - and adobe have the gall to raise their prices again a couple of months ago.

The program will freeze for 2 - 5 mins and crash mid project. My playback screen will also do this from time to time with no warning. It happens sporadically. Even after restarting the program the issue persists. A temporary fix is uninstalling the program and re-installing a previous version. That will usually hold for about a week before the issue occurs again. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi,

I think that almost all Intel-based Macs of this era are exhibiting this issue. The team is still working on a fix. Sorry for the issue.

Thanks,
Kevin

I was facing this issue since 4 to 5 months.

Fixed it after changing the desktop resultion to "default" from "more space" under System settings -> Displays.

Had changed it to more space and since then the issue had started.

I've been having a recurring problem for a while now, but it's very random and I cannot identify the source. I start a video editing, everything's fine - I save and quit.

When I re-open my projet the next day, some files are corrupted, glitched - sometimes only when hitting pause, sometimes even when playing my edit. Files are also corrupted after export.

Sometimes when I uninstall and reinstall adobe premiere, it solves the issue - but not always ! And the issue comes back the next day, or sometimes weeks later. I cannot spend my time uninstalling and reinstalling premiere ! It almost feels like it happens when I've been working for a long time on an edit, or that my computer is "tired". It also seems to happen when I miv .mov (Iphone footage) with .MP4 (camera footage).

Could it be my computer ? The graphic card ? not enough RAM?

I last opened my project file on 7/29/2024 and everything looked fine. I opened file, along with all of my other projects, today (8/11/2024) only to see the exact issue across all of my Premiere projects. There are some weird black and white asterisk glitches throughout each project. When I open the linked clips in my source monitor, they play back normally. I tried the render and replace option, but the clip still plays with a glitch on my timeline and I get a transcode error message. If the clip is not corrupted / don't need to be re-linked, then what is the issue here? I’ve never seen this before and it’s making me anxious about my files.

I haven't updated my Premiere since working on the project and haven't updated my OS.

I am using:

  • macOS Sonoma 14.5, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M / Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • Premiere 24.2.1 (Build 2)

Transcode error:

Glitch on all clips:

This worked only twice and now back to pixelated screen. No option to delete the previos post. I even tried in Premiere Pro 2023 but still the same issue. Upgraded to Sonama 14.6.1 but it made it worse.

I am having this exact same issue. I have tried everything in this forum and nothing has worked. I am not able to color correct my footage and this is getting extremely frustrating having to spend my time browsing a forum and trying all these different things to make this app function properly so I can get my work done. One second my video is fine, and the next it's a glitch screen everytime it's paused.

Hi!

I am trying to make proxies for a large project and it seems like a huge challenge.

A lot of files are already in my project, and I started to try making proxies from the project, right-clicking a batch of files and making proxies withe the Quictime setting. It takes forever. Today, I managed to do only 25 files, but I have hundreds in my project...

The original files are 4k from a Canon C70 camera.

Using a Macbook pro from 2019, and an external SSD drive for the files.

Any clues on a way to resolve this?

Many thanks for any help!

Can you give us more information, your system specification? What's the proxy setting? did you set the proxy destination path to the SSD? Whats premiere version you are using?

16 GB of RAM is decent, but when working with high-resolution 4K footage, especially in large batches, more RAM can significantly improve performance. Your current RAM might be getting maxed out, leading to slow processing,

The Intel UHD Graphics 630 is integrated graphics, which is not ideal for video processing tasks. While it can handle basic tasks, creating proxies from 4K files is very demanding and would benefit greatly from a dedicated GPU with more VRAM. Processing large batches at once can overwhelm your system. Breaking the task into smaller batches might alleviate some of the strain on your hardware.

Suggestions:

- Try reducing the number of files you're processing at once. This might help manage the system's resources better may be 5 files per batch and if it didn't work try one file at a time to see if that works.

- If small batches didnt work, use Adobe Media Encoder for creating the proxies instead.

Hi, thanks for your advice.

I was trying to do small batches (5 files) but it didn't work.

Since I have hundreds of files (it's a long project!) I will try to use Media Encoder to do the proxies. In that case, I guess I would have to rename the files in batch aftewards?

I have been having the same issue for a couple days now and it's really messing up my workflow. I've tried switching back to previous IOS updates, switching to 'solo software mercury playback engine' and reinstalling Premiere Pro. Some solutions have worked for a day or so, but the problem keeps on coming back...

Hey @Mo Alani,

Thanks for assisting. Unfortunately, this is a known issue with such Macs and this hardware. To update GPU drivers for macOS, you update the entire OS.

Cheers,
Kevin
