P: Premiere Pro 24 issue with the GPU on Macbooks Video Preview

This is happening on all of my premiere pro projects. Started when I updated to Premiere 2024. When I look at a video in either source or the timeline, it glitches (see photo). I haven't found anyway to view my footage. The only way to see the real video is by playing the video. This makes it impossible to color correct or colorgrade footage. Please help fix this, it basically is preventing me from editing.

I found a similar issue right after I posted.

I changed my rendering setting to "solo software mercury playback engine" and this fixed the issue.

Hello Alexander,

Thanks for the bug report. Do you have an Intel-based Mac or is it Apple Silicon-based? If it is Intel-based, does this bug report sound similar to your issue? Please let the team know. I hope we can help you soon. Sorry for the problem.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

Adobe Premiere Pro community. I see, from all your post on the Adobe Community forum, that you have been experiencing a problem with clips failing to properly preview in the Source Monitor. Clips either go black and white with pixelation blocks or have varying pixelation issues on the preview window. We want to fix this and understand the frustrations you have all been going through. To do so, we first need to be able to reproduce the failure here at Adobe.  Unfortunately, our attempts at re

As a daily user of Resolve, and participant on their forums, I've seen a few Sonoma-based Mac users post similar things. I'm wondering if there is some issue with the GPUs, and Sonoma, for heavy video post work. Just a guess, but seems possible.

This has just happened to me after a crash while grading footage. All was working fine, crash happened and when I reopened the project all my footage looks like this. It will play when I press spacebar, however it glitches out when paused and when I export the video file looks the same way.

I reset my NVRAM and it resolved the issue for me. (turn off Mac, power back on while holding CMD+OPT+P+R until computer restarts and chimes again, release keys)

-This doesn’t happen right away, just after having Premiere open and running for a bit. But high quality footage always ends up glitchy in the program and source windows. *see photos*

-Additionally, these glitches sometimes randomly appear when creating proxies.

-Furthermore, these glitches appear only on certain shots when exporting from Premiere.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is this a Premiere problem, or is my system just getting old?

SYSTEM SPECS:

Processor: 3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9

Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB

Memory 128 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

MacOS: Sonoma 14.4.1

Thank you 🙂

Hi kmotion31,

We're sorry about the poor experience. We're aware of a similar preview glitch issue & are currently working on it. For testing purposes, would you mind switching the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only to check if it's working properly?

Thanks,

Sumeet

I'm getting this issue... on one clip alone I'm getting several frames of glitched out video which isn't replicated on export but makes viewing in the program monitor very difficult. This has been since Premiere updated. Sometimes I wonder if Adobe fix more things than problems they introduce?

Something else I found in my case: I've been using a 5k LG display and it has apparently been causing performance issues. I've been running it at full resolution and just scaled it back to default settings and that has increased my performance, I've also changed from Apple's motion wallpaper/screensaver to a static background. I have also reduced motion in accesibility settings. These have all seemed to help stability and performance. Hope this helps.

This has been happening to me for a couple of months now and I think i've deduced it to be an over-heating issue. I propped my macbook up with two textbooks and put a room fan behind it making sure there was airflow underneath the laptop. This really helped when I had to render out long, graphic intensive videos on premiere. I also took my macbook to the genius bar and asked them to check for dust and do a cleaning. They said my macbooks interior fan was caked in dust and they cleaned it out for free. Since then i haven't had any of these glitches show up.

I have the exact same issue on files that worked perfectly a few days ago. Looking forward to a fix.

This is mainly on some MacBooks or other Macs, typically Sonoma also. A few users have noted that dust around the inside of the unit was lowering airflow, and got some better at least from cleaning.

Another noted that they put their Macbook on a couple books around the edges and put a small fan behind it, and the issue went away.

So ... it may be a heat issue for the GPU there. Maybe ... possibly ...

I have been working on a project for a while without issue but today the Program monitor stopped previewing all the clips. Every few clips are entirely black or black glitching. I have tried everything under the sun I can think of to fix this but nothing has worked.

I am working off :

An example of the glitch screen -

I have tried the following methods to fix it:

- restarted prem

- restarted mac

- cleared media cache

- changed renderer in system preferences

-toggled on and off safe margins

- working off a different drive

- duplicated the project

- imported the sequence into a new project

Nothing has fixed the playback issue.

The clips that aren't previewing are MP4 Transcodes and MP4 archive clips. But it isn't uniform and some MP4 transcodes and archive from the same source are playing back fine.

Please help!!!

I've been experiencing this issue for quite a while now. On the preview screen, sometimes it shows black and white glitches. Is there anything I can do? I uninstalled Premiere and installed it again more than once, but it keeps doing the same thing.

This is something where if you read through the posts, it is a Mac, probably Macbook, thing, related to GPU. And may be a sign of over-heating or ... too high a power draw, or something.

I wish "we" had a better understanding. I know the devs are working on several of these to replicate. That's about it, though.

My project just started doing this today. I was in the middle of naming clips in the project panel, and the source window started displaying a similar black and white pattern to what you posted. I'm using version 23.6.7 on a 2019 MacBook Pro.

I can see my video playback, but whenever I pause, I get a pixelated white screen. I've tried lowering the playback and pause resolutions but that didn't work. I also cleared my media cache files and restarted Premiere. I'm using the latest version of Premiere and I'm on a Macbook Pro.

This happens to me all the time. I resolve this by cleaning the system using the CleanMyMac software, optimizing the system and resolving various errors, including freeing up RAM and clearing cache files

If the project continues to have some elements with these glitches, try duplicating them... In my project, some clips continued to have these glitches and by duplicating I managed to resolve them.

Good luck!

If your reply was to my comment, no, I'm on Windows and don't have Sonoma.
