P: Shortcut keys overriding while typing

Community Beginner ,
Jun 21, 2025 Jun 21, 2025

Hey everyone,

I've been running into an issue where shortcut keys are being triggered while I'm typing text in Premiere Pro.

For example, when typing on a text layer:

Instead of just typing, certain keys act like I'm hitting a keyboard shortcut (like ā€œCā€ switching to the Razor tool or ā€œVā€ switching to the Selection tool), even though my cursor is clearly inside a text field.

  • Premiere Pro version: 25.3

  • OS: MacOS 15 Sequoia

  • What I’ve tried:

    • Restarting Premiere

    • Resetting preferences

Has anyone else experienced this? Any known fixes or workarounds?

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

A fix is available in the latest Beta builds, starting in build 25.6.0x69. When you can, please give the fix a try and let us know if it is working as you expect.

Thanks,

Theresa

@IanB_360, or whoever gets to this first!

A fix is reported for something in the related thread, and I report there that the bug in this thread is NOT fixed in PR Beta 25.6.0.64 (9/12/25). There is no new PR Beta update so far today. I had not tested in the new PR Release 25.5.0, and I just confirmed that it is present there (as expected).

I also suggest there that this separate thread is preferable (to merging any more of the reports there), because the symptoms are slightly different.

@santiagosas,

When I saw your post, I tested in PR Beta 25.6.0 Build 74, and it is FIXED there. We do not know when it will hit a release version, but that is good news.

For now, use the workarounds: don't select the text tool before editing in the Program Monitor, or edit in the Caption tab.

@IanB_360,

FYI re fix in Beta. Do we know the source of the problem?

This use to not be an issue so please don't respond with "make sure the window is highlighted".

When using the text tool in the newest instance of Premiere Pro an error occurs. After clicking on the program monitor and allowing the text box to appear, typing results in keystrokes affecting the timeline instead. As the user, if I am using the text tool in the program monitor I expect that when I click onto the program monitor it automatically understands that IT should be the highlgihted window. Old instances use to not have this issue. Between this and some other updates (mouse wheel zoom scroll) that broke years of established workflow it seems this program is becoming less usable by each update.

That would be very annoying, but I can't replicate. PC here. Win 11.

@jessenicoli,

Your post was moved to this thread on a bug that has been fixed in the Beta. If you are on a version earlier than 25.5.0, let us know. There are some similar bugs in earlier versions.

Workarounds are to double-click the caption in the Program Monitor to enter edit mode, which changes the tool to the Type tool. But do not select the text tool BEFORE entering edit mode in the Program Monitor.

Or you can edit in the Caption tab.

It does seem like this was fixed in the Beta version and TBH doesn't always happen in the 25.5.0 (Build 13) version but when it does it's so frustrating.

@jessenicoli,

> doesn't always happen in the 25.5.0

I got into the weeds with this the last 2 days and have not yet gotten around to reporting my findings. It takes just the right steps to trigger the bug, but they are common steps used by many users. But if you do something a little different, no bug. For example, if you single click with the Type Tool, and then type a character, you get the bug. If you single click a second time, you don't get the bug.

The list of workarounds is somewhat longer than I realized.

Hi!

Is there any fix to this? It's getting on my nerves tbh. I edit around 5 videos a day for short form (tiktok etc) and the biggest bottleneck or time consumer is editing text because of this bug. It's super annoying and I probably end up dealing with it for at least a few hours each week.

I'm all about being effecient as time is money. So please, is there a fix that I'm not aware of? I could probably add another video to edit each week if this get's fixed.

thank you

/Steven

@stevene63367144,

If you are in PR 25.5.0, you are probably experiencing this bug:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/shortcut-keys-overriding-while-typing/idc-p/1552900...

Your post will probably be moved to that thread. If you are in a version earlier than 25.5.0, there are other, similar bugs, so let us know.

It takes just the right steps to trigger the bug, but they are common steps used by many users. But if you do something a little different, no bug. For example, if you single-click with the Type Tool and then type a character, you get the bug. If you single-click a second time, you don't get the bug.

The list of workarounds is somewhat longer than I realized.

1 - double-click the caption in the Program Monitor to enter edit mode, which changes the tool to the Type tool.

2 - if the type tool is selected before you click in the Program Monitor, click a second time before typing.

3 - edit in the Caption tab.

Hi @stevene63367144

Welcome to the Premiere Pro Forum community. Thank you for taking the time to report a problem. It would help us if you could use the link here, How to Report a Problem, which has steps to provide more information that can help us identify the issue.

Here to help.

I can get it recorded in a few days, but for now I can try to explain a bit better.

So what I do is I create subtitles or text. And whenever I doubleclick and try to start editing the text it gets de-selected and since im typing on the keyboars im hitting all the shortcuts you can think of. Sometimes it works but most of the times it does not. And it's soooooo frustrating because I spend more time on editing text than anything else.

I get paid per clip so speed is very important for me.

Thanks for replying! Hope this can get fixed soon.

What version of PR are you using? That symptom should not happen in PR 25.5.0.
