Premiere pro keeps crashing while trying to use captions/text

Community Beginner ,
Oct 09, 2023 Oct 09, 2023

Hello, I've been using Premiere Pro for over 3 years, but recently, I've been experiencing crashes every time I try to add captions (text). I've tried clearing the cache, reinstalling the software, using previous versions, and even switching to the default font (Arial). The issue occurs after about 3 minutes of working on captions, and when it crashes. If I work on something else than caption such as simple trimming and color grading, it doesn't crash. After it crashes, I receive an error message, although it doesn't identify any specific issues.

I'm using a MacBook, fully updated as well.

PROBLEM SOLVED I Figured out the solution for my issue.
If you select the text option and then click somewhere but do not make text. It will leave this annoying empty red like area until you click back on the Cursor. In setting up my original setup of fonts and colors and sizing and all the detail I must have repeated that 3 times. Then I kept copy pasting those fonts. I finally noticed that when I was in “Text” I kept noticing all these lines with the word <empty> or in "Essential Graphics” wher

What version of PR are using?

How are you trying to add captions? When you say captions (text), are you using the caption/transcription tools or adding graphics text?

A screenshot might help.

Hi! I'm using v 24.0

No transcription tools, just adding text. Here's the screenshot.Screenshot 2023-10-09 at 22.32.56.png

@D280135951p4t,

I don't have 24.0 yet, and I don't recall a problem like that in the Beta version.

To clarify, you are using "regular" graphics text and not the caption/subtitle workflow.

I see nothing that seems odd.

The text is there, so when does it crash?

A bad font can be an issue, so I would test something else.

just want to mention that Stan is the resident captions expert on this forum.  He has been an enormous help to me on a large complex documentary restoration a few years back...  Not always obvious who you can depend on here...

I downloaded the beta version and tried it. Same problem 😞

Yeah, I wonder what's the issue. So the problem occurs randomly as I keep working on adding captions. It'd work for a few and then suddenly crash down.

I have also tried clearing some storage on my laptop (I'm using a Macbook).

So frustrating that I can't work on it. All the previous versions seem not to work as well (have tried about 7 of them...)

I've been having the same issue on my system. Everytime I use captions, or essential graphics text I randomly get a crash. Sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, sometimes after a few seconds of editing text. I've tried all the troubleshooting steps, even a full fresh install and using NVIDIA studio drivers, but nothing seems to work. I've had this issue for several months now, hoping with every update something will change, but no luck. I've tried all different fonts (windows default, CC fonts, different formats, no luck).

Same... I've been stuck with this problem for a few months. Tried the beta, updated version, and past versions. None worked that I'm even considering switching over to another software. It would be great if Adobe could take some actions to fix this 😞

Same issue ... on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra. Latest PP. Trying to change fonts will crash the app. Frustrating. Clearing Media cache will allow me to open the project again but does not fix the issue.

Wondering if there could be a problem with the font. The font book app for
the Mac, which is included with the operating system allows you to check
the integrity of the font. Not in front of my Mac right now but if you have
any questions post back.

I've been facing the same problem. Every time I tinker with captions, Premier crashes. Doesn't happen when you convert captions to graphics, so there seems to be an issue with the software itself not the font

There's a reason we ask people to provide their system info when they ask for help...  It's unrealistic to expect that Adobe can test Premiere on the vast variety of hardware that people are running it on...  So:   please tell us your system specs: OS version, Premiere version, amount of RAM, Hardware specs including graphics card and if you have any 3rd party plugins installed for Premiere... Also, sequence settings and clip properties can also help. Although you can throw almost any format into premiere, some formats can be problematic, particularly on an underpowered system.

If you're on the mac, there's no reason NOT to, just takes a few moments.  The FontBook app is installed by default on the mac OS.  Simply launch the app, display "all fonts, "  select all, control click and choose "validate fonts."    Just did it on my system which has 327 fonts installed.  Took a minute or 2 to check them all.  As to why a corrupt font might be causing the problem, I have no idea. but the inner workings of a program as complex as premiere are hard the understand.  As far as an equivalent program on windows, I have no idea, but should be simple to google the question.

Once we have the info requested, we can move on to hopefully successfully troubleshoot your issue.  Gotta say, I've worked on a number of projects with complicated captions on both variety of macs and windows machines without any serious problems.

Marcio5E57,  If you read all of this thread you'd have seen the request for system info.   Please provide that.  Also, if you're on the mac, use fontbook (an app installed by default) to validate all your fonts to make sure there are not issues with any font.  I don't work extensively on windows, but there are ways to do the same in windows...

What version of PR?

Are you clicking the CC button in the transcript tab? And then immediate crash always? In a simple, new project?

Please stop blaming the victums and start blaming adobe for faulty customer service in addressing this wide known issue.  Why is the expert asking for details? This happens to me on 3 different Mac Book Pro computers with 3 different installs over the course of 2 years. This has nothing to do with bad fonts or some random setting. This has to do with a faulty product and adobe does not care and does nothing about it. I have had to stop creating text in Premiere Pro CC because of it.

I have a 1.5 minute video with a piece of text over a clip every second on average. I can not make it 5 minutes without it crashing. 96% of the time I do not loose my work after I reload the program but 100% of the time it will crash.

No screen shots or details need from me because it happens to everyone all the time when you use a lot of text.

Please let me know the FIX ASAP!

Aloha!

TOM WHITMIRe, I work extensively with captions on both macs and windows and do not have any of these issues.  Why are you having issues while I don't?  Probably because of an issues with hardware, software or workflow and how they all interact...  It's unrealistic for you to expect Adobe to test every variation in hardware, operating system, etc that is out there but you'll find other users here who CAN help...   but that isn't gonna happen unless you are willing to join in the discussion...

I apologize for my outburst. I need serious help. I also need help in preventing Premiere from crashing within seconds of trying to edit a 1.5 minute video. I am having to edit on a different timeline and then drop it into this video and hope that it doesn't crash.

On my third video in this series I din't get any crashed until the video went or 60 seconds. Then it started crashing.

I deleted all custom saved settings and then restored to factory settings based on running a diagnostic. I have reset everything to the best of my ability

@TOM WHITMIRe,

Frustrating. And it is true that users that get this type of crashing with text may have difficulty sorting it. I am on Win10; such crashes appear to happen more often with Macs, but it is not all Macs. The engineers can only fix what can be replicated.

From your screenshots, you are using regular graphics text (not captions), and the timeline becomes quite complex.

Your screenshots did not post correctly (either time). I think there is a special character that is breaking when pasted into the forum. I get them to work by copying all the link text, including the part that is not in the hyperlink, and pasting into the browser. Some of the issues are beyond me, and I just got back in town and have limited time.

One that I did not see is whether you are getting a PR crash screen with the option to submit a report. I'll assume not, but if you do, be sure to add your email and a brief description. It allows the engineers to track down your crash report. There may also be crash logs saved to your desktop.

I've posted the screenshots regarding the WindowServer crash. See this post from a user who solved it by removing a GoPro reframe effect: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/permiere-pro-23-4-0-macos-ventura-windowserver-cras.... I'm not suggesting that is your issue, just an avenue to explore. I wonder also about the AEFilter error.

Screenshot 1 shows your graphics preferences with Ligatures and Smart Quotes on. Ligatures (and Smart Quotes) have caused crashes on Macs. I believe those problems have been fixed, but I don't know for sure. I don't think this is your issue, because it generally caused a crash as soon as a ligature was used. But you work for some time before the crash occurs. Since it could be bad luck (no ligature for quite a while), I'll mention it. If this is the cause, you can avoid it by turning them off or by avoiding a font that uses them. But if you have a bunch of them, changing the global preference does NOT fix the ones that are there, and the individual setting (the wrench icon in the Text section of the Essential Graphics Panel) cannot be selected when multiple graphics items are selected on the timeline. You can select multiple layers within one graphics item.

I finally noticed that when I was in “Text” I kept noticing all these lines with the word <empty> or in "Essential Graphics” where it just shows a blank. Once I went through all 60+ text/words and clicked on them and deleted the 1-3 <empty> things all my problems went away and I no longer get crashing and error messages.

Tom,

Congrats on finding the fix and thanks for reporting it. When you click like that, it creates a new graphics text instance OR a new layer in the current instance. I'm still surprised that cleaning those up made such a difference, but there you go!
