Unable to import .insv files from insta360 x5 camera into Premiere

Hello there,

we are working on a big project for tv where we use alot of bodycams. We used GoPros/GoPro 360 models before and now we added some insta360 x5 models, because the processing of the GoPro360 files into "High Quality" mov files takes up alot of storage and time.

The insta360 ".insv" files are supposed to be importable and editable in Premiere with their Premiere Plugin "Insta360 Reframe - Plugin for Adobe Premiere" (https://www.insta360.com/de/download/insta360-x5)

Also shown in this video for instance:

https://youtu.be/yDod5TlK7zQ?si=pV7Ybj04D5Noup3C&t=240

Whenever I try to import the .insv files into Premiere i get the Error "A low-level exception occurred in: Insta360Importer (importer:47)" (also shown in the screenshot i uploaded here).

I've been in contact with the insta360 Support Team for over a month now and we could not resolve the issue.

This is kind of a big Problem because there is already a lot of footage filmed with these cameras and our post production is blocked by this.

The .insv files playback perfectly fine in the finder & insta360 Studio software, so they are not damaged.

Things we have tried without any success:

  • Clear Premiere Cache and remove all 3rd party plugins completely (Mediacore folder and uninstall Software)
  • Reset Premiere Pro preferences
  • Reinstall the insta360 Premiere Plugin & insta360 Studio, also tested previous versions of both
  • Reinstall Premiere, tested with the latest and previous versions of Premier 25 and Premiere 24
  • Tested on different Mac Systems (Mac Studio, iMac) with different mac iOS versions installed
  • Import via "Import" button in Premiere aswell as drag and drop, also tested to import the files one by one
  • Create a new Premiere project

In every case I got the same error, the files have no (preview) image, just black screen and no audio.

I really hope somebody can help us resolve this issue, I am a little desperate and lost at this point.

Kind regards,

Philipp

Hey @IanB_360,

Update: We found out what the issue was: file renaming!!

In this project we have huge amounts of body cams (mostly GoPros). Thats why we chose a workflow, where we rename all of these files for organization and in order to maintain unique file names.

This is done by the cameramen and we never had an issue with the GoPro files, even the GoPro MAX files.

However renaming insta360 files leads to the issue of not being able to import them into premiere!

I didn't think of it as a possible i

Hi @Philipp_TL
This sounds oddly familiar, might even be related to can-t-import-360-insv-video-files-on-mac-os-15-sequoia
Could you file share one of the files you are having issues with? And also just to be thorough,

Hey Ian,

thanks alot for your reply!

I'm sorry I didn't file this post properly, I forgot about the template.

We just received the first insta360 footage from another x5 model and these files work perfectly fine with the plugin!!

Oddly enough, they behave exactly the same as the (probably) corrupted files, when viewing them in finder and in the insta360 Studio software.

We are going to compare all the settings of these two models and will try to find the issue - whether it's a camera fault or just different camera settings.

I will update here, as soon as we found the issue with the first camera.

Kind regards,

Philipp

Hi @Philipp_TL
After speaking to some of the team, I learned that the Insta360 plugin is currently a known issue. Insta360’s Importer plugin can cause a crash. If you have had any dialogue with support at Insta 360, it would be awesome to connect with them so Adobe can work together to solve this.

Hi @IanB_360,

thanks so much for your effort to help! I really appreciate it.

So the result of the back and forth I've had with the insta support team has pretty been the suggestions (to fix the issue), which I have mentioned above. It would be really awesome if Adobe and insta360 could work together on this.

How do you reckon I can connect you with them?

As for the (probably) corrupted .insv files, should I just upload them as attachment to this post?

The smallest file of the bunch is like ~9GB.

Kind regards,

Philipp

I didn't think of it as a possible issue, since it worked fine with the GoPro files, my bad..

After renaming the .insv files (and their respective LRV files) back to the original file names, everything works perfectly with the premiere plugin!!

Thank you so much for your efforts, I'm really glad we got to the root of the problem now.

Kind regards,
Philipp
