Batch modifying metadata - first two files only?

Interesting new problem reared up in CC 2018. It used to be I could highlight multiple files in the project browser, go to the metadata window, and then add something (say a comment) and all of the selected files would populate with that comment. Now, only the first two files populate and the rest are ignored. Essentially, I can no longer batch modify metadata; it can only be done two at a time.  This is a major breaking of my workflow and would love to know why it is happening and how to fix it.  Is it a bug? Is it a known issue?
