Capture feature has been gone since 2024.

Older versions are no longer available.

For DV you can use WinDV

For HDV HDVSplit 0.77 beta

Windows only.

I have used http://www.scenalyzer.com/ and it works well, do change the default Fat32 to NTFS setting
-I have NOT used the scene detect function in scenalyzer, so don't know how well it works

As for HDV split it might require Windows 10 to recognize the camera over FireWire.

I am still using Premiere Pro version 23.7 (2023) to capture video with audio.  It is still working for now.  Can other users  still download that version?  Also, I heard somewhere that by autumn of 2025, version 23.7 itself may also no longer be available.  I use Capture as a large part of my business.  It sucks being reduced to old freeware to attempt professional level work.  I wish that Adobe would at least make this available in some way.  The technology is there and proven, and many still use it.

When you have an old version that works be sure to UN-check the option to remove old versions when updating

Adobe now offers the current and ONE older version via the online program manager... go to this link to see SEVERAL pictures of how to see the older versions, and a warning about having the download manager keep or delete older versions when doing an update

There is a potentialy much easier way to do this, without using software, and avoids all the complciations of old software versions.  I use a Composite/RGB/S-Video device to capture directly to SD card.   It is painless,  press place, record the video.  It does a decent job of deinterlace also.  It best of all it doesnt tie up your expensive editing machine.

Ann and others provided some good advice on this topic for you already, but thought maybe the option of this hardware based capture to SD card would be somethignt to consider

Lots of options, but here is one for your referance:

Portta VHS to Digital Converter, Video to Digital Recorder with Remote, RCA to HDMI Converter Compat...

@FlyingFourFun

Just wondering how much compression is used with this Portta.

firewire is 1:1.

If one has a lot of tapes I would look for an older computer, pop a firewire-card in and off you go.

I have new custom-built computers and have Firewire cards added for legacy capture hardware.  Works great.  It's the control software that is the issue.  Most capture tools do not have control software.

This is all consumer gear.  I am trying to do this professionally, and all of the professional level software is disappearing.  I just scanned 100-year old 16mm film last week.  These camera tapes, VHS and others will still be around needing conversion for years.  Not sure why so many are eager to dump the sofware and move on.  There are hobbyists still using tape based formats, people are still using legacy video in movies and documentaries, and families still have old film and tapes.
