CC 2017: An unknown error occurred while opening the project.

A couple days ago I spent all day editing a project. It's about 10 minutes long and consists of all iPhone videos - various frame rates and resolutions. It came out great and I closed the project for the night. The next day I came back and tried to open the project and after the loading bar completes, I get the error: An unknown error has occurred while opening the project. Other projects open normally. New projects open normally. But this one does not. I am so upset and frustrated about the lost work.

I went to my recent auto saves and they give me the same error. If I go way back in the auto saves, they will open normally but that was before many hours of additional work on the edit.

I made a new project and tried to import the old project and I get the error: The importer reported a generic error.

I used Media Browser to view the project and the window where I should see everything is blank, even after the loading bar finishes.

I used Project Repair from Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenance Tools which thinks it has repaired the project, but I get the same error when trying to open it.

I used CS Repair from Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenance Tools to trash Premiere preferences. No help either.

I googled the error message endlessly and although the same question has been asked, none of them got an answer.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

I am also looking for a solution to recover the projects which is corrupted

in compression process. It will save much much more people redoing their

work. (near 70% of projects)

When I look back fist time I faced with this error I was going to loose

just two days of work but still it was not bearable for me to repeat that

work, so I spent lots and lots of time maybe more than what I lost but

finally now I can save others too. It is really crazy and unimaginable for

me to loose a project completely but I saw many people lost their weeks and

weeks of hard work. It is very sad

I hope you never ever face with such corruptions in your real life at the

first then in your editing career.

My friend, it seems that your file is not recoverable or at least it is not

reasonable fixing it, because maybe recovering such a file takes days of

work and even with no success at the end.

I fixed tens of lines of your project and steel there are lots of other

broken lines, so in case this file is very very important for you email me.

I was dismayed to read of all the problems people are having with "An unknown error occurred while opening the project." I, too, recently experienced this with Premiere Elements 14 running on a Mac. All the auto-saves had the same problem. I did find that if I double click on the file in Finder, it opens Premier  Elements and loads the program. Thinking I'd try saving the file with what I successfully loaded this back-handed way, Premier Elements still wouldn't open the file under the Open command or Open recent projects. This is totally strange and makes me nervous about creating future projects, as I typically have forty or more hours invested in creating them. The question is "Why does the program open and load correctly by double clicking on it in Finder, yet Premier Elements can't open it?"
