What seems like such a simple thing is impossible to do as far as I can tell in Premier Pro. Looking at the templates for titles and logo animations, some have a light background, and some have a dark background. I have one that I like on a white background, but would like to make a second version on a black background. I can change everything about the template, except for the background. Why must this be so hard?
Hi David,
Have you tried opening the .mogrt file in After Effects? See if changing it there might help.
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin is correct, as any mogrt created in AfterEffects is given only the user-choices for Premiere that the creator sets when it is created.
BUT ... as he notes ... open that in Ae, and you can then do anything you want with it. Save it as a new mogrt with the controls and settings you want it to have.

Thanks, some of the templates are pretty straightforward to change while others I cannot figure out. I need to learn more about After Effects.

Working on mogrts in AfterEffects isn't that hard, really. And they do have an ebook on the basic process you can download for no charge from Adobe, written by noted editor/graphics guru Jarle Leirpoll. I got to be the English language grammarian/spell-checker and general tester for the book btw.
